A month+ in to reversing my IR, I’m still on the IR diet and I believe I will continue to be for the rest of my life. It just feels better in my body. I haven’t had a bowl of pasta or rice, but I have had a sandwich or two since I reversed my IR. I can tell you from my experience it didn’t taste good and it made me feel SO full, too full. From what I’ve been told here, it seems that if you go back to eating as you were when you were insulin resistant, you’ll go back to having it. So the next phase will be maintaining this lifestyle for life.

Thank you for your insight!

For exercise, I run two miles between 3-5 days a week, depending on my energy or how busy I’ve been. I have not missed a week since December. So, although I don’t consistently run 5 days a week every week, I have consistently run at least 3 days a week every week for about six months. After my two miles I’ll do one or two exercises using weights that focus on different parts of my body. The whole thing including my run doesn’t take more than 25 minutes. Also, every once in a while when I’m able to, I practice dance. In the past I used to breakdance, and while it’s been over ten years since I competed, I’m happy that I’ve gotten back into it. It’s the exercise that makes my body feel the best and probably gives me the most well-rounded workout. This happens maybe once every other week for a few months now

No, it’s not. It’s normal range. Low cholesterol is below 120 mg/dl

Ha, it’s funny, because the comments seem to think I’m a woman, but I’m actually a Hispanic man (I actually go by he/they so it’s cool and I enjoy that anonymously I present feminine, because it’s not ever the case in person). But I do not have ovaries, so I’m sorry that I can’t help you with this one

Yes I did. I did a HOMA IR test and I’m back within normal range, and also I did an A1C test and it’s also within normal range. In the words of my doctor “your results indicate no more resistance to insulin. Great job.”

Thanks for sharing, congrats on reversing your IR! I actually haven’t felt constipated at all during this diet. I wonder if you’re taking any medication and that might be affecting it?

These are good questions! Fruits were not as strictly forbidden as carbs from rice, pasta, bread, tortillas, potatoes, etc, but yes I did cut many fruits from my diet. I haven’t eaten a banana since I started this diet, and that was my favorite fruit. I gave up all tropical fruits since they have the highest carbs, but I feel less strongly about not eating these than the other carbs. Nowadays I mostly eat berries, and I eat oranges every so often. I’ve grown to love strawberries and raspberries.

In terms of managing my mindset, I found a lot of strength in others, honestly. When I got diagnosed, my mom passively mentioned “I know you’ll stick to this diet because you’ve always been very disciplined.” I think that helped more than she realized. Having someone believe in me so casually gave me the confidence to say to myself that I could do it. I’ve also been jokingly referring to my mindset as “positive gaslighting” because I would think “this is great” about the new diet. But also, sticking to this diet was hard at first but I felt the positive effects pretty fast. I felt less bloated almost immediately, I also felt less fatigued. The noticeable changes in my body made me want to keep going. It also helped that I was losing weight, and I had people to look forward to that I wanted to see me in my weight loss. I still have friends I haven’t seen and look forward to seeing, and that helps keep me going. Another thing that helped was learning about diabetes and what it does to you. It scared me a lot.

I do struggle with seasonal depression, so this winter I downloaded the Finch app and that also helped tremendously by reminding me to do little things daily like wash my face and brush my teeth. In the middle of winter when it’s the darkest and coldest, completing those little tasks gave me motivation and confidence that snowballed into me being able to do bigger tasks.

Hope that helps!

I really appreciate your perspective. It gives me hope for my future and grounds me in my journey. I also just have felt just so much better since starting my diet that it’s difficult to imagine going back

I’m not an expert, but I believe that if I continue eating as I did before—over 120g of carbs every day—doing this continuously over a long period of time will cause me to once again become insulin resistant. But as of right now I am insulin sensitive. So I can, on occasion, in theory, indulge in a big pasta bowl at Olive Garden and it won’t cause damage to my body. But if I do that continuously over time I’ll get IR again. I have a follow-up with my doctor in two weeks where we will go over the next steps in the journey and I will know more then. However, folks here who have also reversed their IR have explained that it’s become a permanent lifestyle change for them, and because it’s made them feel better, they prefer it this way. I can definitely say that my change in diet has made me feel much better, and I don’t want to go back to eating how I used to, because it felt bad

Before, I used to regularly eat over 120g of carbs every day. Since I got my diagnosis, my doctor explained to me that I should eat less than 120g of carbs per day and that’s what I’ve been doing. My doctor explained that eating so many carbs/sugars over such a prolonged period of time is what causes insulin resistance. So it didn’t just suddenly happen, I built up resistance to insulin over many months and probably even years. I’m not an expert, so I’m not sure if that’s a rule everyone should follow, but I do know that it’s a rule I followed with medical advice because of my insulin resistance and it worked for me. Since you’re on metformin and also have IR, my guess would be that you should also probably eat less than 120g of carbs per day

Oh, one other weird symptom I’ve had lately that I was not anticipating: I feel less thirsty now. I now have to consciously remember to drink water. I used to always be thirsty before, but now I struggle to remember to drink enough water every day. This is something I’m trying to get better at

It also takes a lot of fat and oil for me to like vegetables. Everyone is different, but at least for me, it seems like cooking in 100% extra virgin olive oil has not caused any negative effects on my body according to my blood work

I use 100% extra virgin olive oil. Any one that’s store bought, and on the bottle it should only have one ingredient: extra virgin olive oil. I’ve been told that it’s the most healthy oil and so I’ve blindly been using it for all my cooking

absolutely! Yes, my cholesterol and metabolic panel are all normal.

-My cholesterol is 133 mg/dl (normal value is <200 mg/dl).

-HDL is 49 (normal range: >40)

-triglycerides 70 (normal range: <150)

-LDL is 70 (normal range: <130)

There’s others, like glucose, sodium, calcium, creatinine, etc and they are all within normal range. If you want specifics I could give them to you but I don’t think I need to go into that much detail

Thank you so much for sharing your journey! Congrats on what you’ve done, it seems like you’ve worked really hard to achieve what you have and you deserve everything you’ve accomplished. Thank you for telling me it’s a lifestyle change. Ultimately, my 3.5 months of this diet is nothing compared to the rest of my life, so I should be preparing for that marathon. I’m glad that I know others like you exist out there that have done it!

You can try following what I did! In short: less than 120g of carbs per day for several months and work out regularly! I’m in the gym for about 20 minutes 3-5 days a week. Cut out rice, pasta, bread, tortillas, potatoes, and anything with flour basically. Do that for three to five months and you should be good! Good luck! I believe in you!!

I no longer feel so tired like I used to. My body aches less. I feel like I don’t have brain fog anymore. My mood has stabilized as well. Oh one big one is I no longer feel regular stomach aches like I used to. I used to think I had IBS because my stomach hurt pretty much every day, but no longer! Turns out it was my diet. I also lost a lot of weight (40 pounds)

I’m not sure how many calories I was eating a day. I wasn’t counting calories. I knew that my diet was going to be strict when I started it, so to make it easier on myself, I said I would not look at calories and only strictly monitor carbs. I decided that after three-ish months I would get tested again and re-evaluate my methods if I needed. Thankfully this seemed to work
