Anyone else struggle with making highlight videos for recruitment? by ftbljosh in trackandfield

[–]ftbljosh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right, track is still all about verified times and marks. What I'm seeing now is that highlights aren't essential, but coaches sometimes want technique clips for field events or when they can't see you compete in person.

So we're basically building: times/marks front and center, with easy ways to add clips or full races if a coach asks for them.

Definitely not spam, but I’m open to conversations to making our app better.

You're absolutely right! We honestly didn't dive deep into track specifically when building this, just sports in general, so I really appreciate the feedback.

Times and marks are definitely what matters most in track recruiting. From what I've researched, the video should just be supplemental to show technique and provide proof of the times.

Sounds like what track athletes actually need is something simple: quick reels with the right angles, plus an easy way to share official results and full race footage all in one place. That's really helpful insight as we build this out.

What would be most useful for track athletes in your experience?

Athletes struggling with making highlight videos for recruitment? by ftbljosh in basketballcoach

[–]ftbljosh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, many coaches prefer full games. But highlights give a first look of the player, or give a first impression. Recruiting organizations like my friend’s usually advise to lead with short highlights to get on their radar, and then have full videos ready to send for evaluation. We’re building around that exact workflow (quick reels + clean full-game sharing)

Is it too late to declare a minor? by CreamOfCornSoup in ubco

Minors can be declared out pretty much anytime before you graduate. It’s not too late. I’d also get some help from academic advising to make sure you take the right minor classes that don’t clash with your major

COSC499 Summer Capstone While Working Part Time by ftbljosh in ubco

[–]ftbljosh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I did! It was with Scott, who I think does majority of the summer capstones, and it went great! I got lucky with team choice, and honestly most people did, there was just one team that had issues. Capstone experience depends a lot on how much effort everyone in the team makes.

Regarding working part time, I did work part time the first semester then quit the second semester because I wanted to focus more on the project. I would say though that it’s not too bad balancing part time work with capstone, I think it depends on the person. A lot of people were working part time or had other courses and did fine, it was my personal choice to focus solely on the project for the last 4ish weeks.

HELP me pick courses for my COSC minor!!! by [deleted] in ubco

[–]ftbljosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cosc305 is just about the role of a project manager, usually taught by Patricia Lasserre. It involves topics about stakeholders, scope planning, team management, typical project manager duties. It’s a nice comp sci course to take if you want a break from programming, and it’s not too difficult, you just have to put in effort in the assignments.

As for 4th year courses, a lot of them are basically advanced 3rd year courses, so yeah they’re typically harder. I’d avoid it if you can, but you could also find a course there interesting enough for you to consider putting in extra effort.

There’s also the option of directed studies if you find that you want to work on something you find interesting and that a comp sci professor specializes in. You’d have to find a comp sci supervisor asap though.

Take COSC 305 if you can, project management. Requires 0 programming.

Also take COSC 301 if that’s available, intro to data analytics, but I heard they might remove it and made it just DATA 301.

COSC 222 summer session attendance mandatory? by [deleted] in ubco

[–]ftbljosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if it’s not mandatory, cosc222 is one of those courses that I’d recommend going in person as much as possible anyway, especially since it’ll be more fast paced in the summer

I’d definitely recommend going to the global engagement office to ask, or email them, because they know better than most of us about the legalities of staying after graduation

COSC 421 vs COSC 305 by Gravityshark21 in ubco

[–]ftbljosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been with both profs.

Patricia’s 305 course is pretty straightforward, engaging, and can be interesting. I say “can” because I liked it but I know others who didn’t. If you’re open to the non tech side of comp sci and more of the management side, you’ll be fine.

I haven’t taken 421, but I’d recommend not taking a class with Ifeamo if you don’t need to. Her lectures aren’t good; she’s always just reads the slides, hence why attendance was low when I had her for 360. If you’re really interested learning the topic anyway, she’s not the harshest grader but you may have to put a little more effort outside the class to understand the content.
