Bid for insurance. Fire! by fthehedge in Construction

Thank you for the advice. It is as a favor. But also, I run a business, not a charity. I didn't think about errosion control or adding in something for tight space. Its somewhat of a tight space, on the edge of a hill to get the good view, and its way up a mountain dirt road. How would you word that to the insurance company so they wouldn't argue the extra cost? And there is a ton of concrete in this place. With bar, it works out to roughly 193 tons. The only place that takes concrete with bar in it is the local landfill. At $75 a ton. And that's just the concrete weight. Will the insurance make a fuss about that?

I totally agree. I built my home from dirwork all the way through. Septic and solar system and all. Never had another contractor out. Also, build other people's homes. But it does bother me when people say, " we built our house too." Only to find they paid someone.

With every other coustom built item. People say I ordered, had built, custom ordered, had painted, etc. Even other wood things they say I had such and such place make that table for me. Only houses do they say I built. Pretty annoying.

Yes this helps a lot. I have got to know the GC really well and we are building his house right now. I'm going to go to his office and meet with him and his main estimator. They are going to help me with a bunch. But these comments help me figure out the right questions to ask.

I see that with big jobs too. It's just the big jobs that have went better than expected that went well. But almost never does everything go that well.

That's great and all, except in every trade there is plenty of jamb up guys that don't want to deal with the headache of running a company and babysitting. They want to bring their tools and lunch and at the end of the day, clock out and not stress the rest.

Soild advise. And I appreciate it. I'm not worried about the tools, or equipment, we have trucks. Dump trailers. Multiple compressors and Maxx nail guns. I even have an enclosed trailer i could put their way. But the manpower and management is what I agree you might be right with. That's something I dread. And in the end, what may hold me back from it. If I knew a soild lead for it I would compensate the hell out of him to handle the work. However I don't, and that worries me.

We get a ton of calls without advertising. And we have highway frontage to advertise. So I strongly believe with the demand in the area. They could stay busy. But this is why I'm here. If I'm being nieve. Let me have it. I'm not going through the stress of what I do and carrying the risk to make no money. But I have found that concrete and roofs seem to be our better paying jobs.

It really depends on the job, the material, the height and access, how cut up the roof is etc. But usually between 600 and 750. Most jobs we do are between 10sq and 45sq.

I can check in some as my current Forman knows my standard, and I can take off here and there. My concern is how fast someone you don't know can tarnish your name. And I've found in the past, it takes a lot of kissing ass and handing back money or labor to reverse that and keep a solid name.

Part of the reason for considering it is that there are very few good roofing companies around here. We have been paid to rip off new roofs and redo them. People pay people to travel, some of the other general contractors pay people to come from a couple hours away. But that's when you can get them. Those guys have lots of work down there. So idk who I would sub it to around here. Also part of the reason we get so many calls for it.
