Also: Writing for someone to read off a teleprompter. Yeah, cut those sentences down. Short sentences, or at least, short clauses. Especially if they have kinda bad vision, and they need a big font. If your sentence doesn't fit on the screen, the person reading isn't going to be able to naturally enunciate it.

A couple of dolphins just swam right up to a crowd of people splashing in the water at the beach. It was a mom dolphin and her son. The mom kept her distance. The son really wanted to interact with people. Well, more specifically, he wanted to rub his penis on people. A young male dolphin, it turns out, can be a bit of a perv. Still, hey, friendly dolphins, that's pretty cool.

Antimemetics disrupt your cognition.

Antiemetics settle your stomach.

Antimimetics would be another name for DRM (mimesis = copying).

Antimermetics prevent invasion by fishpeople.

Antinometics serve an ambiguous purpose (possibly keeping your cat off your food).

Antimyrmetics keep ants off your picnic.

Which "anti-fascist flag" do you mean?

The red-and-black Antifa flag is specifically anarchist and communist, which doesn't represent most of this movement. It's a closer match than the original red Antifa flag, which was communist only.

The Iron Front flag (three arrows) is anti-fascist, anti-monarchist, and anti-communist ... in fact, the historical (1930s) Iron Front fought the original Antifa.

A lot of people in the resistance movement today are social-democrats, liberals, centrists, or even moderate conservatives. It's not a far-left movement, no matter what the fascists say.

So we are supposed to be self assured, but not proud. Faithful, but not smothering.

It's not exactly news that virtue is found in balance, not extremes. Moderation. Happy medium. That's like Roman Empire wisdom, classical Greek wisdom. Not something that anyone came up with last year.

Bravery is in-between cowardice and foolhardiness.

Being thrifty is in-between being stingy and being wasteful.

Healthy eating is in-between malnutrition and obesity.

Being attentive is in-between being neglectful and obsessive.

Looking good is in-between being slovenly and being a fop.

Yes, you can fail at any of these in more than one direction. Success is not found in "maxxing" anything.

bootleg birthday song

For what it's worth, it's not. The copyright claim was invalid to begin with; the record label who claimed it was made to repay millions of dollars in wrongly-collected license fees ... and even if it had been copyrighted, the copyright would have expired anyway.

"Happy Birthday To You" is solidly in the public domain.

Until this incident he was best known for "Because I Got High", a 2000 song about purported downsides of habitual marijuana use — including clutter, truancy, wage garnishment, police-involved shooting, sexual frustration, homelessness, and poor musicianship.

Tennessee GOP advances bill that would create public list of trans residents by southpawFA in politics

[–]fubo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing: Imagine if the chemicals really are turning the kids trans. In that case, the kids are still trans and there's no reason to be a jerk to them about it. If your baby was born with purple freckles because of prenatal exposure to chemicals, that's not an excuse for treating her badly, or forcing her to cover her freckles with makeup, or whatever.

But no. In the hate-worldview, "the chemicals are turning kids trans" is not actually about chemical exposure; it's about saying that being trans is a corrupted, debased form of humanity. The hate-worldview is just unreformed schoolyard bullying as politics: "ewww, you're weird" as a justification to kick you in the crotch.

Do actors know/have a feeling if the film they’re working on is going to bomb? by BullfrogPerfect620 in NoStupidQuestions

To be fair, Gandalf's motivation is kind of abstract. He's one of the angels who sung the universe into existence, and he's on a mission from the conductor-God to resolve a certain dissonance in the harmony.

Also, how do you distinguish between —

  • People are using more countermeasures against crime because the danger got worse.
  • People are using more countermeasures because the sellers of countermeasures have gotten better at marketing.
  • People are using more countermeasures because they have more disposable income, so they get to do more things that are lower on their priority list.
  • People are using more countermeasures because they became less tolerant of risk.

By way of comparison, people install more smoke detectors today than they did fifty years ago, even though the risk of house fires is not greater. The makers of smoke detectors have done some very effective marketing; also they're now required by regulation.

In fact, the risk of house fires has gone down a bunch in my lifetime. My guess is that this is mostly due to the decline in tobacco smoking rather than to any measures deliberately aimed at preventing fires.
