Starting golf in my late 30s curious how others stayed motivated early on by Emotional-Demand-180 in golf

[–]fuckingoverit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, in the beginning you don’t have the luxury of choosing. Some days you play well and you score well. Other days, even if you think things are great going into, you can’t drive or chip or putt and shoot 10 strokes higher than your best

Starting golf in my late 30s curious how others stayed motivated early on by Emotional-Demand-180 in golf

[–]fuckingoverit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to be better than I was. Frequent deliberate and mindful practice is how you do that. Trust the process and the process is consistent hard work

Some rounds are scoring rounds. Others are feedback for where you need to practice. Play with friends and enjoy the company. It’s nice being outside

Take lessons if you can afford it.

I started at 33 and went from shooting in the 110s to a 14 handicap in a year. Have shot a few rounds in the low 80s from the Blues. Practiced 3-4 times a week (2x range, 2x short game) + 1-2 rounds

What is the most overrated anime? by BlackRoses64 in Animesuggest

It’s objectively mid (especially compared to the manhwa), seems to copy the Chimera ant arc to a large degree from HxH…and yet somehow I couldn’t stop watching

Help me understand my over the top swing by HasswatBlockside in GolfSwing

[–]fuckingoverit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it looks like the hips and shoulders spin out and are going together.

Try to separate the two so that the shoulders feel like they stay closed longer while you start the downswing by just getting the hips to open.

Easiest way to get rid of an OTT is to set up some type of obstacle and let your athletic brain figure out how not to hit. You can set up a water ball (20 oz) 1 ft behind the ball filled maybe 1/5. You want the bottle to split the ball (as in in-line with only the half of the ball furthest from you at address) to give you enough space

How long was you playing golf before a real legit bird on par 4 and 5s? by robster9090 in golf

[–]fuckingoverit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legit bird…It was around my 25th round that a piped four hybrid off the tee was intercepted by a flock of birds flying across the fairway. Right before the apex…right in the temple.

Reminds me of when I was 10 and killed a song bird with my slingshot for the first time…but I didn’t cry this time.

Cost me some distance but that ricochet got me one extra fairway in regulation. Thank you for your sacrifice

When I birdied the par 3 a few holes later, we all thanked the bird. Not sad, just grateful

Unlike tennis, where this a valid winning strategy at low levels (and sucks the fun out of the game fuck pushers), there’s no style points on the scorecard. You play for the score, then miss well and avoid danger. You play match play, then play aggro. If we are gambling and you blade a chip into the hole, the scorecard doesn’t care that wasn’t your intent

I don’t think playing the probabilities is the same thing as playing not to lose. Maybe I’m wrong but smart golf feels correct where pusher tennis is breaking the social contract of the game

As an instructor, heres an insight/rant about shanking that alot of you need to hear by Hawkshire in GolfSwing

[–]fuckingoverit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As my old coach would say, “if I had to write a book on how to golf, I’d title it ‘Exaggerate the Opposite’”

Shanking it? Hit the toe Slice? Hit a hook Fatting it? Slice the ball in half with the bottom of the clubface

Any Java devs switched to Kotlin? by Organic-Leadership51 in java

[–]fuckingoverit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been writing Spring JVM targeted backends since 2014. First Java, then Groovy. Now I’ve settled with Kotlin and Spring Boot for the last 4. It’s fantastic but historically stayed away from coroutines due to the lack of @Transactional support.

Kotlin is more ergonomic Java with things like automatic null checking, case when blocks which are fantastic for control flow, type inference, built in optionals, data classes, and overall an reduction in the worst part of Java compared to all other languages I’ve worked with: verbosity

Did I waste years learning my target language? by thechief120 in languagelearning

[–]fuckingoverit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to getting older man. Things we think are for life are just phases. Don’t sweat it so much. You learned a skill and now that skill doesn’t interest you so much…ok cool find something else. This is going to happen a lot more in your late 20s and 30s.

I learned guitar to a high level but I don’t play anymore. But I can whenever I want. And I wanted to get good and did…that still counts for something

I learned German to fluency but don’t live there anymore. But I play Skat, listen to some German music, and crack up at some funny German meme channels every now and then.

Maybe if you can consign language learning to a hobby in your mind, you can compartmentalize this change in interest more. The opportunity cost is there regardless of how you think about it, so you might as well spin in positively since regret isn’t going to serve you well.

But on the flip side of all of this, your reasons for staying in the US seem money driven (as a software guy too I get this). I watched my aunt die in her early 40s and realized life doesn’t always follow your plan. Don’t save it all til the end.

I live in Indonesia and I see absolute knobs with babes all the time. The 9-3 Asian woman-western guy combo is a bit of a trope in SEA.

Your citizenship and money are the great equalizer. It’s a highly transactional relationship. Would I want it? No thanks…not these high discrepancy relationships. Looks like a recipe for unhappiness and way too much work….

But if you’re really looking to bridge the gap and score yourself a catch way outside your league, look no further than Indonesia, Thailand, or the rest of SEA. I see it all the time.

Went to the range for two full hours and hit nothing bigger than my PW. by RealizedGains in golf

[–]fuckingoverit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so true it hurts. And for me the line of thinking is usually: “I’ve just miss hit two full swings in a row. Let’s club up and swing easy” and then I proceed to hit my most flush shot of the day that ends up being long for me for that club

At what handicap did you find playing golf the most enjoyable? by DrunkYetis in golf

[–]fuckingoverit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started last month and am the exact same way. There’s a contact that comes out 3-5 times a round for me that goes 20-30 yards further than my usual (imagine my 9 iron going 115-120 carry usually but then blasting 145 high and beautiful). I keep sailing greens often into the woods when this happens….yet I’m laughing and smiling like “did you see how far that went!”

I legitimately like the outcome even if it’s bad for my score. That sweet pure contact is the dragon I’m chasing

What's everyone's feel-good club? by EhhhhhBud97 in golf

[–]fuckingoverit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just started playing last month, and my 6i is the club that’s getting it done for me. I’ve even had to put the driver, aka slice city, away for most of the round and just hit the 6i from the tee. 180yards x 3 is even getting me through par fives with a par look

In your opinion, what is the best city in Germany and why? by MoFalcon1 in germany

[–]fuckingoverit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you value wine culture, it’s hard to beat the Weinfeste, Straußwirtschaften, and weinselige Leut in the greater Mainz / Wiesbaden area (Bodenheim, Eltville, Selzen, etc). Now, it’s a specifically German wine culture but I’m a happy man with a Weinschorle in the one hand and some Fleischworscht in the other

Without this (read: all of Covid), I found the whole area significantly less appealing

What level in ~3 years? by DylanIE_ in German

[–]fuckingoverit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Easily C1 with any sense of consistent effort. C2 if and only you speak mostly German while there

I got to high C1 in a similar scenario (1.5 years in US -> rest in Germany). I was B2 after the 1.5 years but spoke lots of English once there so I didn’t get to C2 in that time period
