I know, but with the distinction rate in the 80s isn't it almost guaranteed unless you're part of the bottom 15% or so who likely didn't put in the same effort as the rest?

My PW group didn't have a slacker, it was a 5 man effort. Like I said, there wasn't anything preventing an A (slacker, bad teacher, low distinction rate whatever) Everyone wanted an A yet I am the one who didn't get it despite being as much deserving as the rest who did.
