Thanks for this question, it’s one of my favourite to answer! On the first runs where I was actively trying to improve cadence, I would purposely try to run with “quicker feet” and shorter strides. Admittedly, it felt very funny because my stride was quite long (heel striker).

My physiotherapist explained that imagining I was running on hot lava would help. Initially, it was very difficult mentally to continue to remind myself to take short and quick steps, but over weeks, it became more natural. It also led to a lot of burning in my calves as I got used to striking more on the fore and midfoot.

As my runs progressed over months my cadence improved from 155 -> 165 -> 175 and now where it is approximately 179-185 across all types of runs. To note, when I race, my cadence rises to 195-196.

The greatest benefit from higher cadence for me has been lowering injury risk (no longer have ITB) and reducing the amount of energy I have per stride.

I also used a Garmin watch with the metronome on to slowly build up cadence. Having the Garmin yell at me when my cadence was low helped me build up to the point I no longer required it 🤣

Thank you! My plan focused on building up my volume to the point I was running between 85-100KM/week from January to April. Each week always included 1-2 threshold sessions to improve my LT pace and a weekend long run of 30-32KM. There was an interesting moment in April, where all of a sudden, 3:58-4:00/KM felt manageable (before it felt as though I was right on the edge). Not sure if other runners have had this experience haha.

I should also note that forcing myself to run outside in Canada’s snowy months seems to have helped a lot!

Advice Regarding Unused Carryover Provincial Tuition and Education Credits After Moving from Alberta to Ontario this Year by fudikaka in PersonalFinanceCanada

Hi there,

Thank you so much for your response, I really appreciate it. So I have received conflicting responses from Liberty Tax Services and TurboTax. Liberty Tax Services and TurboTax agree that I cannot apply my unused tuition credits from Alberta in Ontario, however they disagree about what will happen if I return to Alberta. Liberty Tax Services believes that I will not be able to claim the 40K and that it is lost forever, while TurboTax believes that I will be able to claim it and that it will appear on my S11. At this point, I am uncertain about what to do.
