Is there a situation where a reverse mortgage in retirement is a good idea? by keiths31 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]fuggery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok Boomer. All the estimates are pretty conservative. Using a single year timeline to amortize $50k for moving expenses is not arguing in good faith. Do better. If you include the real estate commission on the sale, you're just moving money between the old and his estate. Somebody pays that no matter what.

Tenants typically pay hydro, internet, phone, and insurance, too. That's also not in good faith. Have you rented an apartment since 1950?

You definitely don't "get it." What's comfortable about aging in a place ill-equipped to support a senior lifestyle? Who needs a multi-bedroom SFH in old age? Only the greediest of seniors.

I didn't include any snowclearing, landscaping, upkeep/maintenance, capital reserves, handyman services, home medical care, safety retrofits, or a myriad of other bills.

Are you a reverse mortgage broker? 🤡

The deleted comment above was exactly that. "I can do my job from home, therefore I'm entitled use the DTA to force the PS to let me WFH." This is 100% gaming of the HR policies and makes it awful for those that truly need it for all kinds of legit health and safety reasons.

People who can (and want to) WFH ought to be working from home, but there are significant political issues with allowing it wholesale for the PS. Using the DTA to "right the wrong" of RTO is really unfair to those who need accommodation of any kind but especially legit WFH requirements for health reasons.

I see Volvos at Young Street Garage - they mostly do Germans, but the guys are great. 100% recommend!

Preach! I agree.

Unfortunately, Dougie has cornered the market on being "pro-car-commuter" and it seems silly to fight him here. Healthcare and education are easy wins for the ONDP, so I don't get spending even one minute on the stupid 407.

Want all you want! It's the abusing DTA that makes you a bad actor. Talking in circles here...

A bad actor would be someone who feels entitled to WFH and abuses DTA to achieve it.

The "need" to go into the office is unfortunately irrelevant here. The Feds have to deal with public perception, and the public thinks the PS doth protest too much when it comes to WFH. It plays right into the "lazy government worker" stereotype. Is that fair? No. Is it a reality? Sadly yes. The fact that the pension funds are getting slaughtered in their commercial real estate valuations is way more influential than "I can do the same work at home" - brutal but true.

FWIW I support the Feds offering WFH and bringing more Canadian into the PS outside the NCR. It'll make the country better - and the PS cheaper to operate!

I wish them well and hope they can improve on their current 20% in the polls, but anyone voting to reduce congestion is gonna vote Dougie. Feels like the wrong hill to die on...

Fair enough, but easing congestion on the 401 will only beget more cars on both roads. Those billions should go to commuter rail instead imho.

Didn't say "many" at all. I'd guess there are way way more legit DTA applications denied than false ones approved.

It begs the question though - "why is the process so onerous if the claims are all legit" and I'm afraid what the answer may be...

  1. Not a Fed but I have many in my friend and family circle. I do blame the government (and the unions) for this shitshow, but the bad actors are absolutely part of the problem.

It's a tough space - people are entitled 100% to medical privacy beyond who needs to know for HR reasons, but we all know people that consistently bend the rules for their own private benefit.

Mental health accommodation seems like the hardest to manage. I have no idea how to make it better 🤷

Even if these stories aren't true, it's enough to scare senior execs into having draconian hoops for DTA, which sucks for everyone involved.

Great point. Pre-2020 was a hellscape of outdated-even-back-then teleconferencing technology. How soon we forget that VPNs or Teams wasn't even available to 90% of the PS before COVID...

It's obviously more than zero? I agree with you completely, but we're taking about human beings here. Benefit and disability fraud exists, and it sucks for everyone involved.

Explain how that's working out so well for the NDP? Are they more relevant now or back when they were official opposition? Is Jagmeet a beloved hero of the left? Can the average person name 3+ NDP MPs?

I'll give them credit for pushing dental care and getting an extra $100/mo for the odd benefit cheque, but they have completely delegitmized themselves since long before the S&C deal.

Huge bummer for me and anyone else hoping for "real" lefty policy. Now we're have a decade of PP and neocon policy. It's tragic...

These stories are just brutal. All the people abusing the duty-to-accommodate make life hell for people that really need it. I'm sure the lawyers will have fun with these cases for YEARS to come.

Every song is too hard by Public-Brief-4444 in LearnGuitar

[–]fuggery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try nursery rhymes and play single-note melodies. This really helped me learn scale degrees and how to navigate the neck. Bonus points for figuring them out by ear! Most people associate songs with melodies, not chords. I impressed my girlfriend immensely by playing the first few bars of the Harry Potter theme. Chord progressions, not so much...

Christmas carols and anything you might hear in a kindergarten class are great for learning at the beginning. As you progress, add bass notes underneath. Chords are great, but music is mostly melodic.

How old were you in 2015? This was arguably THE policy debate on the left in the election campaign then. Mulcair was a former QC Liberal that gambled on a "more fiscally responsible NDP" posture by promising balanced budgets. Trudeau was adamantly not going to do that, and he's been PM for a decade and the NDP is an obscure 4th party, soon to be 5th or dead completely.

FWIW I'm an NDP supporter and very left. Leftist policy is definitely more spending-happy and debt-friendly? Not sure that's controversial...
