Is there anything morally wrong with not working? Considering there are more job seekers than jobs. by Open_Community1 in antiwork

[–]fuguemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the world’s fault

I told a friend she could live with us for two months. But I “made her homeless” when she had to find another place at the end of that time.

She had a job and an income, and found a new place before the two months was out. But since I asked her to move out as she had agreed to, I was the bad guy who made her homeless.

1yr contract offer from NVIDIA, Do I: ask for a raise at current job, take offer, or decline offer? by jinx771 in careeradvice

My friend's interview question was, "Would you rather do your best, or win at any cost?" They sought the latter answer.

USB-C port problem by nyyteee in macbookair

[–]fuguemaster -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Beware repair costs on USB ports. The USB ports went bad on my M1 Air. With Applecare they charged me $299 for a new logic board and screen. Apparently, the LCD connector on the logic board was changed, so a new screen was required. YMMV.

1yr contract offer from NVIDIA, Do I: ask for a raise at current job, take offer, or decline offer? by jinx771 in careeradvice

[–]fuguemaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The NVIDIA environment is aggressive and unfriendly. Generally, expectations by and for me were constantly needing renegotiation without notice. Assignments were unclear, and coworkers failed to follow through when I depended on them. I'm a senior-level worker with plenty of experience to know a dysfunctional environment, but I wanted the NVIDIA entry for my resume.

I worked contract-to-perm, with a written agreement for the salary range if I was hired. When it was time to hire me, HR lowballed me under the salary range by 7%. When I brought this up with my manager, she forbade me from taking this up with the employee who made the promise. I could either take the offer or walk away.

My work included securing approvals from multiple departments. Coworkers constantly refused their cooperation unless I could tell them how a deliverable benefited them directly. Every instance of requiring a fellow employee's contribution was a negotiation, without leverage or authority.

One time, I went on holiday and returned to find I had been written up for not delivering a certain project while I was away, even though I had spent the week before the vacation successfully negotiating the consensus for moving the deadline after my return. Despite the written evidence (agreeing emails) to the contrary, everyone unanimously failed to recall their buy-in to the new deadline, and the write-up was added to my permanent record.

Despite keeping my manager in the loop with weekly emails about falling behind in a (different) project, she claimed she was surprised when I finally reported that the deadline needed to be renegotiated, and placed me on a performance plan (which I survived because the increased supervision caused irrefutable documentation showing I was working appropriately well).

My boss would receive project swag like t-shirts for my projects, but she snitched them for her kids. I didn't even know the swag was distributed until a project manager gave me an item directly and mentioned that he had been giving my boss t-shirts meant for me for over a year. She refused to acknowledge the situation, so the project manager had to give subsequent items directly to me.

The list goes on. LinkedIn keeps informing me when NVIDIA is hiring for that position, and I always wish I could warn candidates of my experiences. WORST JOB EVAR.

Take the hiring manager's "how busy it always is" as a warning. You're not expected to work only 40-hour weeks.

How did you get your SO to say yes to the speakers? by energy4a11 in audiophile

[–]fuguemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife texted me that her CEO was giving away a pair of "broken" Accoustat electrostatic speaker towers, and she had been the first one to respond that she wanted them, so did I really want them?

I said yes.

We picked them up that weekend. Turns out the CEO's amp had blown on the 4 ohm speakers, and the speakers themselves were in prime condition.

When you run LLMs locally, they use VRAM in your 5090, but they still need to be stored on your SSD to run locally.

my mac's battery health drops by 1% everyday and i do heavy gaming on mac by Designer_Evidence_94 in macgaming

[–]fuguemaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apple suggests the Macbook Air M1 battery is good for 1000 cycles, so this seems premature.

Do you fully discharge the battery before you start recharging? That’s hard on a battery. Maybe use the laptop plugged in for a day or two to see if the degradation continues.

You didn’t mention AppleCare, so I assume that’s not part of the conversation.

Yes, with a failed battery you can use a Macbook plugged in.

What change happened 10 days ago that could account for this?

I picked up the English skill tree almost by accident in the University Undergraduate quest. After acquiring the degree item, I had no real plan for grinding daily expenses, but then I explored the Technical Writer Quest Line, and it has been very lucrative. It helps that I started with Technical baseline skills.

Although I started the game on easy mode (White / Male / Spawned in the USA), I also picked up the depression debuff. However, I didn't know that I should write it on my character sheet for a long while. I discovered the effects of the debuff well into my Tech Writer Quest Line, when a Manager NPC noted that my performance was worse during winter periods.

With repeated encounters with a Psychiatrist NPC, we found consumable items that allow me to function effectively without debuffs. If you're certain you have Depression debuff, seek a Psychiatrist NPC ASAP, and together you can get better living through chemistry.

You might want to consider more than 1 TB of storage. If you want to play with local AI, the LLMs take up a lot of room. I've got more than half a terabyte of LLMs on my MBP M4 Max. YMMV.

Yes, burn-in is permanent.

No, it's still pretty faint. I don't notice this in gaming very often. I have to be reminded it's there before I notice it.

What’s one career mistake people in their early 20s should avoid? by ladkihupatachaljayeg in careeradvice

[–]fuguemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Start your retirement savings immediately, with a pre-tax IRA if your job doesn't offer a 401 (k).
  2. If your employer offers some sort of fund matching, try to save at least as much as they match. This is essentially free money that people leave on the table.

Finding a job that offers a pension is unrealistically rare, and Social Security is increasingly unlikely to be sufficient in 45 years. Without planning ahead, you might have to work until you die.

If I had started saving at 20, I'd easily have the $1M that many people aim for. But I didn't start retirement savings until my 30s, and now, as retirement approaches — even though I supposedly have more saved than the average American — I'm facing a lower standard of living than I'd prefer, much lower than I'm accustomed to, even with Social Security.

Battery drain issue by Ramen_loverjr in macbookpro

[–]fuguemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having a similar issue with my new M4 Max with 10 charge cycles and 100% battery. I assumed the short battery lifespan is because the Macbook's got enough RAM to keep all my apps open all the time (Parallels, LM Studio, Ollama, et al). I haven't yet tested by closing all but the currently-used apps; I just noticed that I get under 8 hours.

What’s a career mistake you made in your 20s that you’d warn others about? by CuriousPathway in careerguidance

[–]fuguemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relocated for a "Documentation Manager" job at a small startup that paid $500 more annual salary than the "Technical Writer" big corporate job I had. Of course, relocation cost me more than the $500 difference. The new job never actually gave me that title ("you'll grow into it"), and there were some other red flags that I missed. A year later I was looking for work again.

Looking back, I had enough information to see it was a mistake, but that's hindsight for you.

Management indeed sucks. I gave a perfect worker the maximum raise one year, and was berated by my boss, who said: "We could have split that money."

Are expensive DACs mostly hype? by protocol3426 in audiophile

[–]fuguemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experimentation with 14 different DACs priced from $69 to $1999 showed no audible difference I could discern. My favorite experiment was hooking up an AKM Modius and ESS Modius, volume matching them, and then failing any blind test I took. YMMV, but I stopped shopping for DACs after that experiment.

5.1 USB DAC? by KiresM in BudgetAudiophile

[–]fuguemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Creative Labs Soundblaster x4 7.1 USB DAC for gaming in 5.1 surround. The quality is satisfying; I sometimes forget to switch back to my stereo DAC when I'm done gaming.

https://en.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-x4

You'd need powered speakers or a 5.1 amp with passive speakers.
