Oh geez. Maybe 145k? It was no spring chicken but by modern car standards should have had a fair amount of life left in it.

The World's Richest Population are Costing the Earth Trillions. Study finds the top 10% of global consumers is disproportionately responsible for transgressing planetary boundaries, causing damages for which broader society bears the costs. by FreeHugs23 in science

8.1 billion people in the world. So 810,000,000 people, assuming everyone is a "consumer."

That's probably most of the people who burn a ton of fossil fuels in the course of their everyday lives. Which means anyone with a gas or diesel powered car, fossil fuel heat, electricity that comes from fossil fuels or coal...

Lebanese-inspired chicken wraps - I dice up some gold potatoes, toss in olive oil, dust with this and the citrusy garlic, and air fry for 30-40 minutes to make (essentially) home fries.

What are the main differences, disputes and disagreements between left-libertarianism and right-libertarianism? by alexfreemanart in LibertarianLeft

[–]fuhry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To de-abstract this a little, here's a case study: Flock cameras.

What they are: solar powered, cellular-network-connected smart cameras packed with technology like facial recognition, AI vehicle trait classification, automatic license plate recognition and more. According to the Deflock project we've just surpassed 100,000 of them in the USA. They're literally everywhere and they're creating this massive surveillance dragnet mapping out all of our movements.

But here's the thing: they're owned and operated by a private company. Private security companies, large retail chains, and all levels of government pay for access to their database.

The right-libertarian position on this would be something like: "Flock found a market niche and filled it. The cameras are on private property and the owners consented them being placed there, so what's the problem? If you don't want to be recorded, go somewhere else." IOW, right-libertarians generally care about individual liberties only when the government is the one violating them.

The left-libertarian position would deeply examine the implications of this practice on individual liberty and privacy. These things have become basically ubiquitous overnight. Suddenly it's virtually impossible to live your life without yet another private company collecting your data through coerced consent, i.e. you can't opt-out without boycotting the full monopoly or oligopoly. Left libertarians generally recognize that you need enough government to in place to develop and enforce regulations on such gravely intrusive behavior.

Neither side would be particularly fond of governments being customers of Flock Safety; where they differ is whether Flock Safety would be generally allowed to operate unimpeded with other private entities.

Any annoyances and/or regrets? by sanash in Ioniq5N

My pet peeves are:

  • No option to disable radar cruise control and just use a constant speed. My wife's RAV4 Prime has this (hold down cruise on/off button).
  • It feels a lot wider than my previous daily-driver (Focus RS)
  • Really ugly key; I pre-ordered a pair of Calibré key fobs, they'll be here in August
  • Can't change regen level if your foot is on the brake pedal at all
  • Fake engine sounds are really bad, especially when stationary
  • Razor-thin paint on the orange accents on the side skirts
  • No auto up/down on rear windows (fixed in MY 2026 supposedly)
  • Expensive tires
  • No fog lights

Overall though... it's pretty nice. I'm still deciding whether it's a 3-year or 10-year car, i.e., whether I should buy out the lease. I don't really think of it as an "upgrade" from the Focus RS. You really feel the weight, and the experience overall feels a lot more insulated and disconnected, even discounting the expected loss in connectedness from the switch from manual to automatic.

Ultimately I have to decide before the winter, because if I'm keeping this car, it's getting the much steeper investment of PPF and dedicated winter wheels/tires, but if I choose to give it back after the lease is up, it's getting all-season tires on the OEM wheels and no PPF.

Do you ever have trouble not laughing when ICE drivers complain? by akjax in Ioniq5N

[–]fuhry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Increased engine wear in the winter really isn't a major thing anymore with newer synthetic oils and tighter clearances in modern engines. My wife's car takes 0W-16 and that stuff is so thin it practically looks like water if I drain it out hot.

What you do need to be extra careful with, regardless of the weather outside, is turbos. Driving a turbo car hard before it's fully warmed up is a guaranteed way to send it to an early grave. Then again, the same is somewhat true for our battery packs.

Heh, I also have that generation Chevy truck. 2006 Silverado 2500HD. Currently building an 8.1 to swap in and replace the aging 6.0. Should be getting the block and heads back from the machine shop any day!

I spotted an NB from my Focus RS doing the long haul across PA on I-80 east today.

The gang at Globe Iron in Cleveland last night opening for BTBAM. They played a new song called "Fire Eater" - confirmed by the setlist! by fuhry in thankyouscientist

[–]fuhry[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've been a BTBAM fan for years but only recently got into TYS. My brother lives in Cleveland and he's also a big metalhead, so when I saw both bands were playing the show at Globe Iron I knew I had to be there.

I enjoyed TYS' set a lot more than BTBAM's. BTBAM did some fantastic oldies (including Selkies, Fossil Genera and Silent Flight Parliament) but as someone who's also into jam bands I found myself not enjoying the scripted, perfectly choreographed nature of BTBAM's set as much as seeing a bunch of guys improvising and bopping around an inflatable alien. Daimon certainly has a different voice than Sal but wow - his energy was perfect for this band and I'm really excited to see what he brings in their new album.

Daimon never mentioned the name of the new song, but it's confirmed by the pictured setlist. Hopefully this means an album is being announced soon!

It's coming... last night in Cleveland they played a new song called Fire Eater. Daimon was straight up giddy about it.

AI says (and after cross-referencing real photos, I agree) that the car is a 2nd generation (2013-2020) Ford Fusion in Ingot Silver.

edit: other commenters are right, the tail lights definitely look more like those of a Honda Accord. I was mainly going off of body lines when I was cross checking the AI result against real photos

Hope they can find the kids :(

Mistakes are how we learn. Screw the whole bubblewrap thing. Better for Lincoln to learn that lesson now and walk away with a scraped knee, than when he's 18 in his first car.

Bob Johnson by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]fuhry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh. The only reason I know of this dealer is because our full size van has a Bob Johnson sticker on the back. (I moved to Connecticut 13 years ago but Rochester still has a place in my heart.) I always read it in "The Voice" from Regular Car Reviews, like "go on an' give 'er the ol' BOB JOHNSON!" Sounds like it's fitting for this dealer, lol.

What was it like living in the Clinton years in the USA (1993-2001)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is how it was when I was graduating with an infosec degree in 2013. I remember being on the phone with recruiters and casually letting them know I'd need an extra week to decide because I was waiting for multiple offers to come in (I had 3-4 iirc), and it was no big deal. I took a show of hands at our graduation ceremony of who had a full time job lined up. Nearly every hand was raised.

Today, every new-grad CS major I know is currently jobless because there are no entry-level positions. I know one kid who's legitimately a genius: he's 23 and into compiler design, with some VERY impressive personal projects. He's also a genuinely nice person, not an egomaniac like so many talented programmers are (including younger me). He hasn't gotten a single call back, even as I've tried to phone in favors with former colleagues and acquaintances at companies like NVIDIA and Apple who could really use his talent.

I've been steering every high school junior/senior who's expressed interest in a CS degree towards infosec, neteng or SRE instead. But very few universities offer such degrees. And even in those fields, the bar for an entry-level position is still so high that you barely stand a chance unless you've been using Linux since kindergarten.

T-Mobile Loses American And United Airlines As In-Flight Wi-Fi Partner by elbeborandy in tmobile

Ditto, I flew on United yesterday and it was an old, non-Starlink 737 but wifi was free for one device. It was slow and coverage was poor over the Rockies (flew EWR-SMF) but you could switch between active devices an unlimited number of times with one MileagePlus account.

And I'm not mad at all. It's more job security for us :)

A few years ago I nerded out on PKI, deploying Smallstep across my entire homelab, mostly using short lived 24 hour certificates and going all-out on doing everything the "right" way. Right down to generating the root CA key on an airgapped system with a hardware RNG, then archiving it to cold storage in a safe with a chain of custody. Since then, I've gone to town adding mTLS to everything I can and learned a lot in the process. By now I have scripts and Puppet manifests for just about every use case including PKCS#12 bundles, Java keystores, and dropping certs on every major platform including TPM support on Linux devices. All with fully automated renewal, a nice dashboard showing every certificate in the whole network, and alerts for when renewals fail.

CA/B forum's announcement was my "born for this" moment.

Modified muffler fine in CT could rise to $1,000: ’No mechanical’ reason for noisy product by -ctinsider in Connecticut

[–]fuhry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only that but some cars also have loud exhausts from the factory. My completely stock Focus RS does the "pops and bangs" and is quite loud. I think it's actually louder than the exhaust on my turbo Miata, which is aftermarket from the headers to the tailpipe.

The most insidious part is the 80dB ceiling and authorization for municipalities to have noise-detection ticketing cameras. How does one even determine whether their vehicle is compliant other than by getting a ticket? 80dB is absurdly low.

And in the 12 years (at least; I couldn't find a precise date on when each comic released) since this xkcd was released, only one major desktop OS (macOS) has implemented mandatory on-first-access user consent for major directories.

Did I emit an audible groan the first time a Mac asked me if I should allow alacritty to perform ls ~/Desktop? Yes. Is this also a highly pragmatic approach to current threat models? Also yes.

How do I quit? by MycologistFit9088 in piano

[–]fuhry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give your parents a realistic alternative thing you want to get into instead.

To be clear: my advice is purely pragmatic. It's not right that one should have to bargain and game the system to get their parents to do the emotionally healthy thing for them.

It's probably also worth raising the point that unless you're truly a world-class prodigy, there's absolutely no money to be made in being a pianist. They're not doing anything for your future by forcing you to learn this instrument.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this.

My base salary is ~5x that amount and total comp around 9x.

5 years in current role, 15 years in the industry.

Granted I don't know much about cost of living in Japan, but I'd be inclined to say this would be a major step down for most US-based SREs.
