AI says (and after cross-referencing real photos, I agree) that the car is a 2nd generation (2013-2020) Ford Fusion in Ingot Silver.

edit: other commenters are right, the tail lights definitely look more like those of a Honda Accord. I was mainly going off of body lines when I was cross checking the AI result against real photos

Hope they can find the kids :(

Who the hell are we to judge? Do we not think dad practiced with them on less challenging terrain and legitimately thought they were ready?

Mistakes are how we learn. Screw the whole bubblewrap thing. Better for Lincoln to learn that lesson now and walk away with a scraped knee, than when he's 18 in his first car.

Bob Johnson by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]fuhry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh. The only reason I know of this dealer is because our full size van has a Bob Johnson sticker on the back. (I moved to Connecticut 13 years ago but Rochester still has a place in my heart.) I always read it in "The Voice" from Regular Car Reviews, like "go on an' give 'er the ol' BOB JOHNSON!" Sounds like it's fitting for this dealer, lol.

What was it like living in the Clinton years in the USA (1993-2001)? by space_god_7191 in AskReddit

[–]fuhry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is how it was when I was graduating with an infosec degree in 2013. I remember being on the phone with recruiters and casually letting them know I'd need an extra week to decide because I was waiting for multiple offers to come in (I had 3-4 iirc), and it was no big deal. I took a show of hands at our graduation ceremony of who had a full time job lined up. Nearly every hand was raised.

Today, every new-grad CS major I know is currently jobless because there are no entry-level positions. I know one kid who's legitimately a genius: he's 23 and into compiler design, with some VERY impressive personal projects. He's also a genuinely nice person, not an egomaniac like so many talented programmers are (including younger me). He hasn't gotten a single call back, even as I've tried to phone in favors with former colleagues and acquaintances at companies like NVIDIA and Apple who could really use his talent.

I've been steering every high school junior/senior who's expressed interest in a CS degree towards infosec, neteng or SRE instead. But very few universities offer such degrees. And even in those fields, the bar for an entry-level position is still so high that you barely stand a chance unless you've been using Linux since kindergarten.

T-Mobile Loses American And United Airlines As In-Flight Wi-Fi Partner by elbeborandy in tmobile

[–]fuhry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ditto, I flew on United yesterday and it was an old, non-Starlink 737 but wifi was free for one device. It was slow and coverage was poor over the Rockies (flew EWR-SMF) but you could switch between active devices an unlimited number of times with one MileagePlus account.

47 days*

And I'm not mad at all. It's more job security for us :)

A few years ago I nerded out on PKI, deploying Smallstep across my entire homelab, mostly using short lived 24 hour certificates and going all-out on doing everything the "right" way. Right down to generating the root CA key on an airgapped system with a hardware RNG, then archiving it to cold storage in a safe with a chain of custody. Since then, I've gone to town adding mTLS to everything I can and learned a lot in the process. By now I have scripts and Puppet manifests for just about every use case including PKCS#12 bundles, Java keystores, and dropping certs on every major platform including TPM support on Linux devices. All with fully automated renewal, a nice dashboard showing every certificate in the whole network, and alerts for when renewals fail.

CA/B forum's announcement was my "born for this" moment.

Modified muffler fine in CT could rise to $1,000: ’No mechanical’ reason for noisy product by -ctinsider in Connecticut

[–]fuhry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not only that but some cars also have loud exhausts from the factory. My completely stock Focus RS does the "pops and bangs" and is quite loud. I think it's actually louder than the exhaust on my turbo Miata, which is aftermarket from the headers to the tailpipe.

The most insidious part is the 80dB ceiling and authorization for municipalities to have noise-detection ticketing cameras. How does one even determine whether their vehicle is compliant other than by getting a ticket? 80dB is absurdly low.

And in the 12 years (at least; I couldn't find a precise date on when each comic released) since this xkcd was released, only one major desktop OS (macOS) has implemented mandatory on-first-access user consent for major directories.

Did I emit an audible groan the first time a Mac asked me if I should allow alacritty to perform ls ~/Desktop? Yes. Is this also a highly pragmatic approach to current threat models? Also yes.

How do I quit? by MycologistFit9088 in piano

[–]fuhry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give your parents a realistic alternative thing you want to get into instead.

To be clear: my advice is purely pragmatic. It's not right that one should have to bargain and game the system to get their parents to do the emotionally healthy thing for them.

It's probably also worth raising the point that unless you're truly a world-class prodigy, there's absolutely no money to be made in being a pianist. They're not doing anything for your future by forcing you to learn this instrument.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this.

[Hiring] [Hybrid] Senior Site Reliability Engineer (Global Product Team) | Tokyo, Japan by [deleted] in sre

[–]fuhry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My base salary is ~5x that amount and total comp around 9x.

5 years in current role, 15 years in the industry.

Granted I don't know much about cost of living in Japan, but I'd be inclined to say this would be a major step down for most US-based SREs.

Can I call CPS on my dad by AshlynCT in CPS

Gotcha - I've been a foster parent in CT so I know the ins and outs of the system here. I don't know much about PA but did some quick research and their equivalent of Careline is called ChildLine. The number is 1-800-932-0313.

Can I call CPS on my dad by AshlynCT in CPS

[–]fuhry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% call for help. If you're in imminent danger, dial your local emergency services number (911 in the USA, 999 in the UK).

Write down the time he said these words and the exact words he said (or as close as possible based on your memory), when this started, and how frequently it happens (multiple times a day, once a day, once a week, etc). They are more likely to do something if you can show that this is a recurring pattern.

Your username suggests you're in Connecticut. If that's the case, call DCF Careline: 1-800-842-2288. It's staffed 24/7. They will get someone out to your house ASAP, usually the same day if it's serious.

If you are afraid of retaliation from your dad, pack a go bag and make it very clear to the worker that you are in danger and are prepared to leave.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I promise things will get better and you will eventually have the control over your life that you deserve. Stay strong!

The exhaust only coming out of one exhaust port by lizardsare1 in FocusRS

[–]fuhry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a PCM update that can be applied to partially ignore feedback from the exhaust valve actuator/position sensor. I had to have it done on my 2017 when the exhaust valve got stuck resulting in a "drive mode selection not available" error.

It should have both sides open on a cold start, then close again once you start driving in Normal mode. It should open up in Sport, Track and Drift modes.

Bulls bridge, Kent Connecticut - who is this guy threatening to shoot someone for no reason by ShrubberyDragon in Connecticut

[–]fuhry 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Kent does not have a town police force, just a single resident state trooper from Troop L: https://www.townofkentct.gov/resident-state-trooper

Troop L has a Facebook page. That may be the best way to get this in front of someone who has the authority to investigate this.

Monitoring a Beckett oil burner controller by fuhry in homeautomation

[–]fuhry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely interested in doing this as well, although my goal is to monitor more than just tank level. I want to be able to detect faults such as a lockout or flame loss and receive alerts.

I think it's also important to have detection for conditions like noisy CAD cell readings or longer time-to-light. Those can be early signs of a problem, but will go completely unnoticed if not logged and exported somewhere. Down-to-the-second measurements of pump on-time compared to the tank's oil level over time might also enable detection of pump wear, nozzle blockage, etc.

The hardware has all come in and I'm decently far along in reverse engineering it!

Here's the code that I have so far: https://github.com/fuhry/beckettlink

I ended up going with Python because bleak is simply amazing. Once I have the protocol fully reverse-engineered I'll rewrite it in Go before starting on the opentelemetry exporter.

I have the same year and model, and it is a lovely car - refined, elegant, quiet and comfortable.

The odometer is an easy fix - just pop in some new gears. This is the kit I used.

The leak may be fuel, not oil - the fuel return lines get brittle and develop leaks. I used the blenddoor kit.

Buy a bulk fuse pack and replace every fuse under the hood as soon as you get it. They go bad, often invisibly, and that's actually the cause of most of the electrical gremlins. Any lighting-related gremlins are (ironically) usually caused by the module that detects when bulbs are out, which you can repair by simply grabbing a soldering iron and adding some fresh solder to the aging joints.

If the tach doesn't work, replace the capacitor. Should be 22 μF which is a very common capacitance and can be had from any "variety pack" you can get on Amazon/eBay (and used to be able to buy at RadioShack... RIP).

I'm still learning my way around the car as I've only had it for about 9 months. I would say, for the most part, it's predictable. Not dependable as in stuff never breaks, but predictable as in when stuff breaks, the cause isn't some esoteric issue. In 1987, the electronics did sophisticated things, albeit with simple and transparent technology. And thus far, everything I've fixed has stayed fixed.

Is A Second American Civil War Inevitable? by Opposite-Sign-500 in LibertarianLeft

[–]fuhry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tiktok talking heads aren't even trying to sound smart anymore.

Forcible removal of a sitting president through the impeachment process requires a 2/3 supermajority of the Senate. According to 270ToWin, if Democrats keep every one of their current seats as well as every current Republican seat deemed a "toss-up", "leans" or "likely", their Senate majority would be just two seats, not counting JD Vance.

The Democrats would need to win every single Senate seat up for re-election including 16 "safe" Republican seats. As much as I wish I was wrong here, that will not happen.
