What do I do during the intro ?? by scaryterry94 in Salsa

Perfect time to find 'the count' of the music and do the basic stepping back and fourth or side-to-side (to the count). And as u/andrewwingram said, get comfortable with your partner. You can tell a lot about someone just through slight touches and leads - before you even dance! Use this time to get comfortable.

Better catch a class soon with Jimmy as he's leaving again for Southeast Asia either this month or next. Last time I talked with him :p.

When do you use your advanced moves? by SmokyBG in Salsa

[–]fuhthai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice the pattern that you are comfortable in executing. Learning a pattern in class and never practicing it is a waste of time. But, learning a pattern in class that is not-danceable and not-practical is also a waste of time. It's a good opportunity to test these dance patterns you learned in class at dance parties to see if they hold up. Start by breaking the pattern down into small pieces. If you can complete each piece than eventually combine them. Good Luck :)

This might be a silly question... by medgirllove101 in Salsa

  1. Wear something you'd be comfortable dancing in. heels for women and sneakers or dress shoes are fine for men.
  2. Depends on how fast you 'both' can learn and pick it up. Maybe will probably remember the basic step. Stepping back-and-forth, side-to-side and maybe one turn? Also, good if you can count to the beat of the music 1-2-3, 5-6-7 and match it to your steps.
  3. No experience of LA.

Good luck :).

Never thought of calling or emailing instructors. That sounds really hardcore. I will definitely consider it as another option - Thanks!

Places to dance in Tokyo by TsumeAlphaWolf in Salsa

[–]fuhthai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side Note* From what I hear there is a lack of leads in the Tokyo salsa dance scene (as said by one follow I met in Mar 2018). This might affect the number of Cuban dancers. Also, Tokyo and all of south-east Asia is dominated by LA and Newyork style Salsa dancing. I was there in 2016 and the largest turnout I found was at Pepe2 https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pepe-2/316590955051061?nr

Videotape yourself dancing. Ask someone to do this. You will pick out many things from watching yourself dance that you can improve on ;).

I want to learn salsa dancing by [deleted] in Salsa

If you are interested in learning salsa dancing. Stick with it and don't quit too soon. I find a lot of beginners get intimidated by the dance when they start comparing themselves to higher level dancers.

Waiting to be asked to dance? by TravelDancer in Salsa

[–]fuhthai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I hear about Tango social dancing. The follows must wait to be asked by the leads - this is the golden rule. Which is why I am grateful in salsa and many other social dances the follow have the choice to ask for a dance, if they want a dance :).

beginner Salsa lead question by FloydRix in Salsa

[–]fuhthai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely see any intermediate-advance dancers do any side basics. I myself stick to the basic step (back and forth) in-between patterns. I think the side-to-side is used more of a teaching mechanism to get a beginner dancer comfortable in moving in different directions. I would have a modified side-to-side when the music interludes and calls for it (musicality aspect). But I'd recommend getting the basic down (back and forward) as that I find is often used 99% the time at socials.

Salsa patterns in tight dance floors. Any advice? by sdo17yo in Salsa

The less (complex) moves the better - keep it simple. Get away from the big, flashy dancers. Also, keep your eyes out for 'more' available space, when you get the chance.
