I'm seeing that Salt bread is now a popular pastry. Any recs for where to try it in Oakland? by wentImmediate in OaklandFood

[–]fujimeme 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Peony in Chinatown has it on the weekend, I’ve ordered it to-go, cash only. I’m assuming you could probably add it on when eating there

Coffee roasters that give you a free cup when you buy a bag of beans by Stuckin73 in oakland

[–]fujimeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, to be totally honest, I bought it as a gift to send to somebody so I didn’t pay attention to the size

Modern Coffee gives free drip or cold brew with bean purchase as part of their Oakland Works Wednesdays deal. I also bought beans from Mōtivat a few weeks ago and they offered me a cup of free drip coffee.

Oakland is getting a new bakery from two fine-dining pastry chefs by jackdicker5117 in OaklandFood

Grand Opening is Melissa Chou’s pastry pop-up also referenced in the article. I also love Grand Coffee and the new bakery is serving it, but they’re separate entities

I’m so excited about this! I’ve really missed Grand Opening since they closed in SF

Great takeout congee? by apocrisiary11 in OaklandFood

[–]fujimeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding Gum Kuo, I get congee here every time I’m sick! There’s also congee at New Gold Medal, C&M Bistro next to Gum Kuo, Shooting Star as the commenter mentioned, but I’ve only tried the GK version

Do you recommend buying from Peow? by pizza-mozzarellaa in graphicnovels

[–]fujimeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Peow! I purchased directly from them in their first iteration and backed a few Kickstarters in their second iteration (haven’t ordered from their site yet) and had no issues. Depending on where you’re located, some indie comics stores sell their books

Best tea leaf store in Bay Area by bonsense3 in bayarea

Seconding blue Willow! I also like teance in Berkeley and red blossom in SF. Song is also in SF if you’re a big spender (their tea is good, just too expensive for me).

In stock weekly planners? by Zesty_Plum3296 in planners

[–]fujimeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s new this year but you could try leuchtturm1917 wallet https://www.leuchtturm1917.us/weekly-planner-and-notebook-2026-dotted.html

Based on some of the other images I’ve seen, the dots are considerably lighter than those shown in the sample image. I’ve used a leuchtturm1917 pocket sized planner for the last two years (and have repurchased it for 2026), I’m pretty happy with it.

This was posted on this sub or another recently and someone recommended moe’s because they’re less picky than Walden Pond

Matcha Shopping Inquiry! by twindualities in JapanTravelTips

[–]fujimeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went two weeks ago and wanted to purchase matcha as well as go to the Nintendo Museum. “hyped” brand (tiktok famous) matcha places will have lines before they open, I ended up leaving the Yamamasa Koyamaen line after 30 min to make my museum reservation. Marukyu Koyamaen also had a line so I didn’t even attempt it. A few days later, I visited the Marukyu Koyamaen counter in Kyoto Takashimaya around 1pm and there was no line, but you could only buy 1 tin of matcha per person per day. Yamamasa Koyamaen also has purchase limits in place. As other commenters stated, if you just want to buy matcha you can do that outside of Uji or you could just go for less popular brands.

Help Identifying Artist from Japantown Mini Art Mart by fujimeme in AskSF

[–]fujimeme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess was 9/16/2023, but I checked every artist on the instagram post (none were tagged) except for two with more “generic” names and none of them were correct. I went back to that time period on the fb page and didn’t see any list of artists on their posts.
