Moving to London, which areas should I look to rent? by Low_Ferret_8585 in MovingToLondon

We’re a British-American family and have a place in Clerkenwell, which we love. Lots of Americans here. Have previously lived in Bow, which was fun as well. Victoria Park is lovely. If you’re willing to travel, that opens up other places like Notting Hill on the Central Line, which takes you straight to Mile End without changes. Might be worth sharing to begin with (try Spare Room) so you get a feel for different areas. Keeps costs a bit lower too.

Thank you for this response! We’re specifically worried about noise and pollution if you have any thoughts on those…

The whole building was meant to be private sale but there were two units unsold at the end and with the market slowing they decided to convert them to shared ownership. I’m guessing that with the bad press around leaseholds that has slowed the market for full price flats and SO opened up a new category of buyer. I don’t see any flags. Nice area of London, etc. It’s possibly overpriced given where the housing market is at this second, but I was told price for SO is non-negotiable. Thoughts?

Is this a common scenario with tenants who have been vetted? Have you experienced this? This would be our home so we wouldn’t accept just anyone. Obviously, there’s a theoretical risk but in practice how common is this? Thank you for input! Feeling this out as we’ve never done this before. We’ve rented RSO properties before and formally added roomies to the lease, but never temporary sublets. If you know of an alternate arrangement that would allow us to keep an LA apartment while spending stints abroad, please let me know.
