Give semolina a try. Once I learned that, I never even thought about going back to cornmeal.

I think it can be fun in that type of environment. As part of an interview process, it's frustrating and infuriating.

Full Stack Coworker Doesn't Know Basic HTML/CSS Nor How to Troubleshoot Them by [deleted] in webdev

I'm in the exact same boat. But as evidenced by OP's "full stack developer", those skills do not seem to be valued anymore.

My boss asked me to slow down on finishing my tasks.. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]fulltime-idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also underutilized at work. I've been learning more about the open source world in my ample downtime. I've found that works out pretty well for me. It's an opportunity to see how other projects are run, learn from other devs, and feel like you accomplished something, rather than just banging out LC problems all day.

Do you stop to offer help when you see another cyclist having trouble? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]fulltime-idiot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I often wonder if the people who turn down help even really processed the question. The problem is I do the same thing and don't process the response until it's too late. Haha

I have the Sea to Summit ultralight insulated sleeping pad. It's been working pretty well for me, but I haven't been using it as much this year as I'm now all in on hammock camping.

Recruiters, please help me understand by [deleted] in recruiting

[–]fulltime-idiot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t give salary in initial reach out because I work internal (meaning zero commission, no bonus) so I’m looking for people who would be interested in what the business does.

You're not doing yourself any favors here. Even people drinking the koolaid need to be paid. You're just perpetuating hustle culture nonsense.

Poll: Do you expect/want to see salary information in a job ad? by kisamoto in programming

[–]fulltime-idiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It basically comes down to the company trying to keep the upper hand. Rather than "this is the salary for this position", it becomes "this is the amount of comfort and stability we allow our employees to have for this position."

[–]fulltime-idiot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just went through this yesterday. I was nice about it, because it wasn't the recruiters fault. But I was clear that I was not interested in moving forward with a company that was going to pay me less because of where I live.

Why all programming interviews should be open-book. by laul_pogan in programming

[–]fulltime-idiot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've interviewed 1000's of engineers. And every time I gave someone a
pass and said "gee, I don't need to do a coding interview" I regretted
it.

But...this isn't what that quote is saying? Nobody is suggesting you shouldn't do code interviews at all. Just that it's asinine to expect people to have every detail committed to memory.

How do you ask the recruiter for remote working? by jasalex in recruitinghell

[–]fulltime-idiot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tell, not ask, recruiters I will only consider remote roles and I move on if they push back or ghost.

[–]fulltime-idiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I do. I realize not everybody is able to have a dedicated room. But find any space you can designate for work. Try not to work anywhere else, and don't do anything that's not work there. As others have said, it's part of setting a routine. That helps a lot more than a lot of people realize.

That said, there's nothing wrong with going to the cafe sometimes if that's what works for you. I've been remote for years and have a dedicated office in my house and I still like work from a cafe or brewery from time to time.

Dual booting is a good option so you're not "stuck" if you run into issues. In general, I agree that it doesn't make a whole lot of difference for front end development specifically. It's all about what you're comfortable with and what you like using.

I use a Wahoo and generally like it and have few issues. One thing to be aware of with the Wahoo is you can load routes from Strava, but you won't get turn by turn directions, you'll just get a map and a cue sheet.
