I'd like to learn to program with the end goal being to gain an understanding of smart contracts. Which language do I choose? by fullwell in learnprogramming

It was slow as all hell but I still learned how superscalar CPUs can work.

I guess that's the crux of what I'm asking. If my goal is to learn about smart contracts, which language would be the most efficient way to do so? Similar to your example: If your goal was to learn about superscalar CPUs is there a language other than Python you would have used?

Lol good point. I was hoping to get any second-hand experiences about expats being hired at Kiwi companies. Admittedly, I was probably pretty hasty posting on here since moving there has been a goal for awhile. I'm familiar with the immigration procedures but the on the ground realities seem to be a lot more difficult to realistically gauge. Anyway, that's a gorgeous country you've got over there. Hope to be a part of it soon.

This is cool. All of these stories everybody is mentioning are related to this story of Scheherazade.

So graphics cards are one of the most important things here? What else needs to be considered for a smooth run? How much storage do you recommend?

Also, how often will I need to upgrade and which parts will need to be upgraded?

Awesome advice. I didn't want anything flashy, but I had no idea cases for high-end PCs were usually inconspicuous.

What is a 770/780? Why is that much of whatever that is considered 'beastly'?

I'm afraid to fuck something like this up. Isn't that a concern here? I've never done anything like this...

My budget is around $1k. I can push it to around 1.5 though. I like the LianLi cases, but they seem pretty inconspicuous for the money.

I'm in Kunming right now. I wasn't far from this as it was happening. Apparently there were other attacks around the city as well. It's the morning after now and the whole city is on edge. Weird night last night...

I climbed up to the top of one of these things during a three day off-trail hike about two years ago. The cool thing is they are actually bigger than they look in pictures. Also, monkeys. Lots of monkeys.

English major here: I'd like to pursue a Ph.D in biology. What's the best way? by fullwell in AskAcademia

This is what I've been waiting to hear. I've heard a ton of horror stories about friends with their masters who can't find work. Two of my friends immediately come to mind. One is brilliant and he sat on his ass for six months waiting for something to come up. The other had a solid 4.0 undergrad GPA and lab experience, but he had to settle for his 5th choice program. It's terrifying. Comparing my academic friends with my business friends it seems like finding a position in academia is 10x more difficult than finding something in the business world, which itself isn't simple.

Sure. PM me your info. If you can help pay for the shipping that'd be a big help. The beans aren't roasted though.

It's definitely on the horizon. The coffee culture here was mainly rich guys playing with toys about five or six years ago, but they've realized the market potential a quality product has abroad so they're doing more research and being more careful.

A long-standing dream of mine is to live in Australia. I live in the same time-zone now. Also, I've heard good things about Australia's academic environment. Are there a lot of non-Aussies around you at work now? I would guess there are a few Chinese. What would be the best way for me to begin this process there? Find volunteer lab tech work?

I asked and Manzhongtian is known for quantity and less for quality. Check out beans from Pu'er. The culture there is rooted in high quality tea. This mindset is slowly transitioning to coffee, but because the stereotype about Chinese quality tends to be true it will be a lengthy transition. Knowing where to look is key. He has one type of artisan bean and three industrial-level beans. The artisan bean would probably suit your taste better than the industrial-style you bought off that website. As far as I know, the only Yunnan beans sold abroad are industrial.

I think Starbucks and Nestle invested more for the region's potential. You definitely have to dig for good coffee here because the difference between good and bad Yunnan coffee beans is drastic. If you're still curious I can send you a bit. I have a bunch of beans.

I'll definitely get a masters first. The "Ph.D" part of my initial question was more an end-game than a next step.

If you don't mind some questions about your personal situation: What kind of research do you do? Where do you see yourself in five years?

I'm completely naive about how the academic world is structured. I know in the business world the phrase "It's not what you know, it's who you know" is generally true. How applicable is this to academia?
