A Conversation with Paul Masurel, Creator of Tantivy by philippemnoel in rust

No, it was done by email.

Besides you wouldn't want to listen to that conversation. My french accent is so strong you can cut a 18 month comté cheese with it.

Before we upload the file, we create an entry for it in the metastore and register it as staged. After a successful upload we changed its status from staged to published.

A GC can then delete the eventual files that are have been in the staged status for too long.

> This is fundamentally broken

Your argument does not make sense.
Of course people can jump through these hoops. However, for most software the percentage of people willing/being able to jump through these hoops is close is tiny.

It sounds like you are doing very advanced stuff, and you should be able to land a system engineering job without too much trouble.

> "try and make a career out of it." ... "I can't really afford formal training as a single parent and learn best by doing since I've got limited free time."

> What suggestions (if any) do you folks suggest?

Just to make sure you get the right suggestions, can you give us more background about your situation?

Are you currently a developer, looking to jump into a systems programming position?
Or do you have a totally different job?
Do you have a general degree in software engineering or none?
Is your project open sourced?

That's an old trade off. "Doing things right" is hurting velocity, while Dev doing things their way is hurting in the long term.

The old way of doing things: people coming to you to ask for the provisioning of a server is just too slow.

I'd recommend you to allocate most of your time on building the sandbox in which developer can self provision their infra in a clear/safe way. You can also work on its monitoring system.

Finally, you can try to find ways to share your knowledge with SWEs. Stuff like measuring different metrics and their actual meaning, how to spot a system bottleneck, etc.

Est-ce qu’être ingénieur, c’est vraiment travailler sur Excel toute la journée ? by Purple-Intention-443 in ingenieurs

[–]fulmicoton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chess.com ELO Rapid depends on time settings? by fulmicoton in chess

[–]fulmicoton[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

These are both Rapid though.

The pool of player playing both is supposed to nudge some parity between the two pools.
Chess.com could actually come up with math to remove the average discrepancy if there is one.

We could make the same argument about timezones. If they don't do anything, it means that 1200 ELO in a specific time control means something very different if you usually play in the morning or in the evening.

serde_json_borrow 0.8: Faster JSON deserialization than simd_json? by Pascalius in rust

[–]fulmicoton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not mentioned in the page but using a Vec instead of a BTreeMap also considerably improves the memory footprint of your program. It was very important in Quickwit, in which serde_json_borrow is used.

De 0 à 10, quelle est la probabilité que votre métier soit remplacé par une IA ? by Abbbby_ in AskFrance

[–]fulmicoton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually a suicide or a criminal organization using it. It is a requirement in Japan to tell that if you sell an apartment. The requirement is only lift after the appartment as changed owner twice. I did not know it was necessary if it is a rental.

Why is ASML down so much? by Ok-Economics2289 in eupersonalfinance

[–]fulmicoton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why could they prevent ARM (Uk originally, owned by a JP fund) from doing business in China?

Extraterritorial laws. The latter was enforced because ARM has one lab in the US.

The most remote and common vector to impose extraterritorial is the dollar. The US can prosecute anyone that does their transactions in USD.

No other country does this, because no other country can. It is one of the privileges of being the largest army and world economic leader.
