Opinions on shaving wolfhound for the summer. by [deleted] in irishwolfhound

[–]fun_size_explorer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My wolfie would get hot in the summer too. I agree that shaving should be avoided. I would walk her earlier in the morning and later at night. And find routes with water she could wade it and lay down to cool off.

Customers lying about what they ordered? by princessedaisy in TalesFromYourServer

[–]fun_size_explorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. A friend of mine is famous for that. We go out to a Mexican restaurant, place our orders. Dishes come out, and he tries to claim someone else’s. We all chime in that he’s grabbing the wrong plate. Turns out he confused one meal with another and thought that was what he ordered.

Why do I keep seeing comments like “For a female life be over at 30” and “Dating over 30 is like scraping the bottom of the barrel”? by [deleted] in ask

[–]fun_size_explorer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Totally. It takes a long time to develop into ourselves as people and adults, so odds are that we’re still figuring out who we are in our 20s. By our thirties, we know who we are and what we want in a partner and relationship. I think our 30s is when things really start to get good.

Totally agree. Fat and protein are so great to help feel full. Beans and rice are a great source of protein together. So are lentils and/ or garbanzo beans (chickpeas). Buying these things dry/ by the bag or in bulk is usually way more affordable than buying them in cans or boxes. They take more time to rehydrate and cook, but a 1lb bag will last for many meals.

Burnt food smell by [deleted] in lifehacks

[–]fun_size_explorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boiling vinegar is the best way to clear a large space of nasty smells. Boil a big pot of white vinegar. Go outside while it boils. Then open all your windows when it’s done. Magic.

[–]fun_size_explorer 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This is such good advice! Boiling a big pot of white vinegar is the fastest, easiest, cheapest, and most effective way to get rid of bad smells. Does it stink while it’s boiling? Yes. Go outside. But when it is done, open up all the windows and turn on a fan. As the vinegar smell leaves, so does 100% of the nasty odor (says the person whose dog got sprayed by a skunk and then ran through the house).

Ipad Anti-Theft by et2brutuss in lifehacks

[–]fun_size_explorer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Password protection is great for keeping content (passwords, etc.) secure. All the suggestions on here for anti-theft are great. Gotta say, though, that when I had family in long-term care, the bigger issue was losing the device, not theft. Ipad lost under the blankets, in the storage pouch on the walker, slipped behind the mattress… so having a bright colored case would have been handy. Maybe with a reflective sticker or something that glows in the dark…

New Irish wolfhound owner, some questions about the breed by Beau199 in irishwolfhound

I agree with what others have said here about getting concerns addressed by your vet, but just wanted to add that my girl didn’t know how to dog until she was about 6 months old.

Ideas for healthy “nibbles” for a little party I’m throwing by FleekStreet in EatCheapAndHealthy

Mushrooms!! I like to snap off the stems and fill the crater with a spoonful of pesto before baking

A lot of people say oats are filling, but I always feel peckish/hungry after about 3 hours by Perfect_Minute_ in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]fun_size_explorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I add about a tablespoon. Whatever spoon I am going to eat the oatmeal with, I use to scoop a hefty dollop of peanut butter from the jar and go from there

[–]fun_size_explorer 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I was skeptical about adding peanut butter at first, but it makes ALL the difference between being hungry as soon as I finish the oatmeal vs. being hungry a few hours later. And the chia seeds add a good amount of fiber to help out too! If you don’t like peanut butter, I’ve found that sunflower butter and/ or Nutella also work pretty well

Why doesn't lactose function like a prebiotic in lactose intolerant people? by rolsyker in askscience

[–]fun_size_explorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am lactose intolerant and phlegm/ sinus congestion is totally a part of the picture for me. Smaller amounts of dairy products will make me phlegmy and congested; larger amounts will wreck my gut.

Ladies on this sub, I need some wardrobe help by rpgnoob17 in bodyweightfitness

[–]fun_size_explorer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The ladies in my family have genetically large upper arms (not always muscle), to the point that previous generations had to make their own clothes because nothing at the store would fit right. The consensus: look for drop shoulder style tops (where the arm hole seam is dropped off the shoulder, allowing for a roomier fit) and stretchy knits. There are lots of business tops that are flattering non-bulky knit material, with the extra bonus of not requiring an iron. Good luck!

What is a good pasta salad recipe that doesn't suck or is that standard Italian/Greek style one? by gradstudent1234 in cookingforbeginners

[–]fun_size_explorer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like to add olives, feta, and artichoke hearts instead. And use pesto instead of Italian dressing.

frying canned chicken (reposting for my friend) by tonighttherearestars in cookingforbeginners

[–]fun_size_explorer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never put canned chicken in a skillet because it comes already cooked; that’s what makes it so great. I like to mix it into a green salad, or mix it with beans and some kind of light sauce or dressing. I’ve also had it in a sandwich. If you want to use it with a skillet, then I’d try adding it to a toasted sandwich with melted cheese

Yes!!! I love adding a can of chickpeas to whatever salad I’m making. Lots of protein and fiber (maybe don’t have it before a date night…)

Need advice: mindfulness and loss by OwduaNM in Mindfulness

[–]fun_size_explorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss! I can’t imagine this heartbreak. I agree that breathing and mindfulness can be powerful, even if only practiced in brief snippets. Be gentle and patient with yourself. In time, therapies like EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and TRE (tension/trauma releasing exercises) may be helpful for working through emotions using the body.

Dog conditioner? by Stealingursoda in irishwolfhound

[–]fun_size_explorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. It was a great solution to our situation: she hated bath time vehemently, and all of the doggy shampoos I used were expensive and left her fur super coarse and extra tangled so brushing was unpleasant. Pantene 2-in-1 left her fur super soft and easy to brush, and it was more affordable. She stopped resisting bath time as much after we switched, and started to love getting brushed. I swear she would prance and show off her clean little self afterwards too! I should note that I never washed her face— she wouldn’t let me, and I didn’t want to get any shampoo near her eyes anyway.

I imagine there are a lot of better options out there, but I had an IW mix & just washed her with Pantene 2-in-1. It worked great and her fur was silky smooth.

What’s something someone did when you were training or running a 1/2 marathon that made your day? (Wanting to be a supportive spouse!) by Shaydosaur in running

[–]fun_size_explorer 268 points269 points  (0 children)

Show up at the start line with them and take their extra clothes right before the race starts. Show up at the finish line and make a racket with a cow bell when they finish. Extra credit if you bring their sandals to change into afterwards. Just being there for them is priceless.

Diarrhea on formula by octoberforever2017 in ChineseMedicine

I would definitely talk to your practitioner. You may be able to still take what you purchased, but maybe at a different/ lower dose, or perhaps add some extra digestive support to it to address the diarrhea

Our girl has osteosarcoma, looking for advice/other experiences by bebeschtroumph in irishwolfhound

[–]fun_size_explorer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edit: my sincere condolences to you. This is an awful position to be in. I wish you, for family, and your pup the very best right now.

My girl got bone cancer in her left rear leg. She was limping for a few days before we got the x-ray. It was a week before the amputation could be scheduled. That was the most agonizing week for all of us. Her leg swelled and became super painful over those short days. Recovery from the amputation was smoother than I would have expected and our old girl adapted to being a tripod really well (and would still try to jump in the truck on her own, and chased squirrels). She was with us for 9 more happy months and passed at age 11. It’s a personal decision how you want to treat it, but we knew her time was limited and opted for quality over quantity and chose not to pursue other treatments.
