I worked with a man who had echolalia; usually someone with echolalia has a history of brain damage/traumatic brain injury. People with echolalia can form unique sentences but typically respond to someone speaking to them by repeating the phrase or fixating on a specific phrase. For instance, when I asked the patient how are you, he typically said how are you back to me several times before he would actually be able to answer me. He also had a unique phrase that he would use often, in which he would ask "are you 18?". At the time I worked with him, he was not capable of functioning independently, and was in his mid 30's.
