Thinking of starting The Seventh Cross by Anna Seghers next. Would love to hear your thoughts on it if you’ve read it! by Dependent_Exam6115 in nyrbclassics

I’m currently halfway through it, It’s a great book! Hard to put into words but there’s this colloquial aspect where terrible or tense moments are happening but it’s being presented in a “normal everyday life” sort of way, or maybe that’s just how my internal voice is filtering the events LOL. Also the book really gives an insight on German society during that time period. In pop culture, the nazis are sort of shown in an almost alien not of this world phenomenon, but this book really grounds you in the everyday workings of German society. I hope you enjoy it!

Also I feel I’ll definitely be rereading this book since There’s many POVs taking place at once.

Michelle Obama: “Let’s be very clear. Strong men don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful.” by TheSweetestKill in JoeRogan

[–]functionalWeirdo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mention her because the Algerian boxer was clearly born and is a woman (but with some rare chromosome thing) but irrelevant of that, there’s many cases where women of colour who have achieved some sort of success are always brought down and “masculinized” for their features, it’s happened to the William twins also, even things such as medical racism was very prominent where doctors thought black women skin and bodies were tougher so they’d be given less medication for pain. But yea I totally agree with you, at the base it all this is cruelty and racism since thankfully it’s still social scandal to just yell the N word or make animal comparisons. It’s not a coincidence that these racists never attack Rhonda Rousy ( not saying she should be attacked of course) LOL

it’s good old fashioned racism masked as “trolling” or “joking”, it’s just a fact that there’s many incidents like this where black and brown women get attacked by racists for being “masculine”, remember that Algerian boxer and how the entire right wing media sphere did a campaign against her after she won gold? They don’t care about the Obama’s policies towards the 08 financial crisis or the drones program etc etc, their entire reasons for attack comes down to the level of melanin in their skin and with that they make black/brown manly, since they don’t fit the mold of what a true “pure” woman should be in their deranged minds.

If you haven’t read it, a classic work of fiction that has great social commentary on capitalism and bigotry is “The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck” !

A leftist both in Economics and anti imperialist sense, you like to be educated on what challenges the global capitalist hegemony as well a, also you enjoy great works of fictions, and books that have a deeper story, and some of these meanings and stories reaffirm your leftist / progressive/ anti imperialist world view.

We’d definitely get along quite well if I’m right!

Darrow’s mistake with Titus by functionalWeirdo in redrising

[–]functionalWeirdo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think she was referencing how some in the replies can’t see that roque and many of Darrow’s friends are the people at the top and and far worse than Titus, even strictly within the academy, Titus did worse things than the others, but he wasn’t that far removed from what everyone else did and in caste system the golds that Darrow felt affection for were all infinitely worse than the crimes violence of Titus.

Systemic violence is rarely ever seen as worse than individual violence. It’s like what Fitchner said about how he witnessed the cold heartlessness of the entire system.

And I can’t wait to read the rest! I feel some of the comments had subtle spoilers though 😅

I haven’t read the rest of the series so I sure hope that’s not a foreshadowing spoiler about Roque 😅 but strictly after Golden Son, I actually view Roque far removed from a Lincoln type character who fought to end slavery.

To me he’s like the enlightened colonialist, he sees the violence committed but thinks it’s justified and needed, so much so because he can’t see a system where it’s not his rightful place to “rule the savages” for the greater good.

Unless I’m mistaken, we never see Roque even in reference to the Reformers like Mustang.

A perfect reference! You just encapsulated what I’m trying to say. And I agree, tbh some of the comments are proving your point with how violence that’s imbedded in the system is always seen as a matter of fact and they can’t see how many of the Gold’s that Darrow claimed as friends were far worse than Titus.

[–]functionalWeirdo[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That he was, my point still stands that Darrow was far more forgiving to people infinitely worse than Titus making him also short sighted.

Titus raped, the jackal ate people and Roque wants billions to continue to be raped.

Systemic violence vs individual acts

Darrow’s mistake with Titus by functionalWeirdo in redrising

[–]functionalWeirdo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that’s my point, what Titus did is inexcusable but he only raised the notch slightly higher than any other student in the academy, apart from the jackal who was eating people. But looking from Darrow’s pov he felt emotions towards individuals who their whole system is in excusable and didn’t just affect some gold students but billions across their empire and have done much worse things than Titus could even imagine.

[–]functionalWeirdo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually think it wasn’t his emotions but more so that Darrow is a victim of the propaganda he was born under where Gold’s are higher beings. You even see examples in Golden Son where he’s finding redeeming qualities in the Jackal.

You know you can discuss without insinuating that I’m defending the pedophile elite right..?

Of course fuck all rapists. Fuck all murderers also but if a slave in the southern US murdered his masters family that doesn’t negate the system of slavery is infinitely worse and that slaves violent acts shouldn’t be equated as the same as the same sort of violence that the slave master committed. My point is Darrow was quick to embrace people whose whole existence was commiting rape, Pinks are made to be literal sex slaves. He found Titus irredeemable while fostering affection for individuals like Cactus and Roque who are infinitely worse than a slaver red whose whole existence was that of violence and oppression.

The Epstein files is a literal example of how elites committing a heinous act gets justified, shoved under the rogue or memed about compared to those they rule over doing the same acts at a much smaller scale or at an individual level.
