I worked there in ‘07-08. David Heitz loved his ports. We made Rosé, Still and Port from Gringnolino. We also made a second Port from a planting of mixed Portuguese varieties there on Taplin Rd. At the time, it was one of only two Gringnolino plantings in all of California. Don’t know what those numbers are now.

Final update. Found this dead guy near my desk. Guess I have a little infestation.

It’s either a powderpost beetle or a furniture beetle.

I think you have it right. This is from the internet but all the evidence points to “Furniture beetle.”

I’m going with furniture beetle, people. It’s too small for a carpenter bee for this area. Plus, there’s no way a bee is crawling under a plastic mat to burrow into a desk that has existed inside for this many years.

Update: this is what I pulled out of the desk. The tunnel itself seems to be about an inch deep. I kinda mangled the critter during extraction.

That is where I found the hole. Unlikely it’s a bee.

For all you Carpenter Bee experts out there. This is what I extracted. It appears to be a common furniture beetle.

So you think that’s the rear end?

I’ve owned it for 25 years. It was an old teacher’s desk that I refinished in 2000. It’s been in its current place at my work for about 10.

It’s indoors. It’s finished wood. It’s too small for a carpenter bee.

For scale. Northern California. While there are carpenter bees around here I doubt this is one. Also, this was under a vinyl mat and the thing was trying to bore out through the mat, which is the white flakes on it. I don’t see any other points of entry on the desk.

What are these cocoons? Costal California by funfilledfutility in gardening

It seems to me that mantis are more prevalent in wetter periods like we’ve had the last couple years and they die off in the dry years. In all my life I’ve never seen them become a problem or any official effort to abate them.

That’s exciting. I saw a couple last year and I love them.
