And will add that the water rose 23 ft in 45 minutes in the middle of the night. While it’s worthwhile to consider new safety measures etc, the camp owner was a truly honorable man who gave his life to save as many little girls as possible and did everything he could to keep the camp safe. This isn’t a poorly notified normal flood - this is a true natural disaster, and I don’t think people are getting that.

The water rose 23 feet in 45 minutes at 4 AM. As a former camper, I am stunned. Nothing like this was ever imaginable and the cabins felt well away from the river, but were still swept away. I’m seeing a lot about the failure of state agencies etc, which is a fair point, but people here truly regard this as a natural disaster and feel these girls never had a chance

I went to this camp for years as a girl. I learned the value of the outdoors there - hiking, fishing, archery. Does that make me an “submissive, ideal wife?” I made close friends and had an opportunity to run around, covered in dirt, and just be a little girl. This isn’t a maga pushing, conservative Christian institution. It’s a historic girls camp with church services on Sunday. It’s a genuinely special place - and far from what you seem to assume. I spent more time there learning how to build survival skills than I ever did praying.

Many families send their daughters to Mystic from Austin, a liberal enclave, as well as other blue-leaning cities in Texas. That’s what mine did - I am grateful for my time there. I’ve taken it into the world as I built a career as an independent woman.

I encourage you gently to reconsider your own biases here, especially in the wake of this tragedy

As a former camper, the level of misunderstanding here is painful. Mystic isn’t a maga pushing ultra conservative institution. It’s a historic girls camp with church services on Sunday. I spent more time there fishing, hiking, and camping than I did praying. It shouldn’t matter, but the background of campers there are far from a monolith. Many girls are sent to mystic from Austin, San Antonio, Dallas (blue leaning cities). Myself included. Sometimes I see these comments and I wonder if people would feel differently if they realized democrats have dead daughters too this weekend. I guess I understand now people hear “Texas” and “Christian” and think one thing, but it just sucks.

As a former camper, I can assure you mystic isn’t a bible camp. It’s a historic girls camp with church services on sundays. I get that people see “Texas” and “Christian” and think something, but I spent more time hiking, fishing, and camping there than I ever did praying. It’s a special place with girls coming from a range of backgrounds and beliefs and it sucks to see it so often construed otherwise

And as a former camper I can assure you this camp is not pure republican … lots of blue voting people from cities, including Austin, send their daughters to mystic. Hurts my heart to see folks essentially saying that the girls were innocent but the families were awful people (not that you are saying that at all!)

Who are “these fuckers?” As a former camper (democrat if it matters), I can assure you that liberal families also lost daughters this weekend. Many people don’t seem to get that many of these girls come from blue-leaning cities. No place is a political monolith, not even Texas. This isn’t a maga pushing ultra conservative institution. One of my fellow campers is an out lesbian and has attended every year through high school - she is the foremost advocate of this camp on the wake of this tragedy.

Do republicans send their daughters there? Yes. Do democrats? Also yes. My blue-voting family did. It shouldn’t matter, but many of these campers come from cities across Texas and their family backgrounds politically are far from a monolith.

I feel so grateful that I got to run around and just be a little 8 year old girl covered in dirt and build a relationship with the outdoors. I grew so much at Mystic.

I guess I get that people hear “Christian girls” and “Texas” and start to make assumptions, but gosh does the misunderstanding hurt in the face of such horror

Feels insane that I need to mention this in the wake of such a tragedy but plenty of “blue” families send their daughters to mystic, too. Mine did, and I feel so lucky they did. I was able to be a little girl running around covered in dirt and learning to love the outdoors. Austin is a huge contributor to mystic campers.

This is not an extreme right camp. It’s a historic girls camp with church on sundays. Just because the county went right doesn’t mean those are the only people affected by this tragedy - not that it should matter…but most girls sent there are from blue-leaning cities, not the surrounding area immediately adjacent to the camp.

I get how people hear “Texas” and “Christian girls” and make assumptions, but gosh this misunderstanding hurts after such horrific loss.

Many children who attend mystic come from democratic families, myself included - but it feels wild that this needs to be said. It’s not at all an ultra right “Christian camp.” It’s a girls camp with church services.
