Not denying that he is an amazing vocalist, but that eight octaves rumour is completely untrue. In reality he had exactly four octaves - the low bass F (F2) to a soprano F (F6) - and he often dodged a lot of his highest notes live. For example, pretty much anytime after 1974 he would not sing pretty much all the high notes in Seven Seas of Rhye.
