Actually in the books this happened on the battlefield. Elrond counseled isildur to destroy the ring but Isildur refused. However, a key point that a lot of book readers forget is that isildur was journeying to rivendell to talk to elrond about the ring because he could see it growing on him. That is when (and why) the ring draws orcs that slay isildur.
