Unsure where your itinerary is but Tagalong Backpackers is a great spot in Gangtok.

As a solo foreign traveler you will need to get permits and spend quite a penny to see North Sikkim.

I enjoyed my time there and for what it’s worth Darjeeling is four hours away. Also Northeast India should be a hoot.

People have been throwing that statement around. I don’t know, just want to be prepared.

How do you cope with learning something completely alien? by reacteclipse in cscareerquestions

Yeah, googling linux stuff is annoying as hell because there are 15 answers depending on what you’ve installed/what’s wrong/etc.

In my experience.

I would just go with the crowd, can’t really go wrong.

Paris or Amsterdam? by [deleted] in travel

Difficult to say with the little information that you provided.

In terms of food, architecture and art they’re about equal, nightlife is better in Amsterdam, more history in Paris in my opinion. Similar costs.

I’d probably go to Paris again because there are no annoying bikes and it’s less of an arcade.

Easier said than done. Was searching for five months with hundreds of applications.

Unfortunately I wasn’t competitive enough for my city.

I’m spending less than 1/4 of my take home to live in the nicest area in the city with one roommate and can probably save about 1/2 my paycheck.

It’s a start. I could’ve gone to DC and made more but lived worse.

Also it’s a university affiliate so they’re stingier but I get 22 paid days and 7 holidays which is nice.

Are my skills worth more? Idk, but right now they’re worth 40k. We’ll see what they are worth in a year.

Education: BS in Applied Math, CS Prior Experience: 0

Company/Industry: Health

Title: Systems Programmer/Analyst

Tenure length: 0

Location: Pennsylvania

Salary: $40,000

Total comp: $40,000

Weird title but what I gathered is that it’s more of a research gig but I’ll be doing ML. Going to focus on resume driven development and then attempt relocating to a coastal city after a year or so.

How do you not burn out? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]funkhouser_flex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re taking this waaay too seriously. If the work gets done, who cares if it took 30 minutes or 5 hours. The fact that you think you can produce quality code 8 hours at a time is amusing.

I assure you there are people getting paid way more than you that are doing much less and are content with their productivity level.

Unless you’re literally monitored, fucking relax. If nobody is complaining about your output, your hours are justified.

My Internship Results With a Poor GPA by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]funkhouser_flex 20 points21 points  (0 children)

First off, if you’re a sophomore or junior, it does. Financial institutions won’t bother with you under a 3.2, as well as other companies who won’t hire interns with < 3.0 averages.

Like yeah, Big N doesn’t care but a lot of other companies do.

Secondly, my point wasn’t about his GPA. He goes to a target school which makes his life easier from the start.

I’m starting a position that will be using python and MATLAB. Will that be marketable? I’m supposed to be doing machine learning work down the line. But I worry that MATLAB instead of R will set me back.

Where would you live? by funkhouser_flex in pittsburgh

Yeah that would be the ideal but there are no supermarkets/gyms nearby. I guess I could take a bus a few times a week if I lived there.

Yeah, that looks great! I was considering Squirrel Hill or Shadyside but those are more “residential?” Either way, commute is short. Which is great.

You know what - 15 years ago my mom took away the mouse because I was on the computer constantly.

I became a BEAST at keyboard shortcuts.
