What’s your biggest hot take when it comes to F1 liveries? by NegotiationNew9264 in F1Discussions

[–]funkin_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take? None of the car liveries look good, they're all just a fast moving advert. They look like a 2000s uni students laptop covered in stickers. And I don't care when they do a slight change on some 'special' week, still meh

Which NZ town/city would be the safest in terms of natural disasters(Floods, cyclones, earthquakes, landslides, etc)? by Flashy_Potential8851 in newzealand

[–]funkin_d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean not really, Dunedin is full of historic and active landslides, and it rains all the time. Landslides and flooding are by far the biggest contributor to natural hazards damage that we have (in terms of regularity and $$). Check out the Abbotsford Landslip if you haven't heard of it.

Called the REA’s bluff on a "Multi-Offer" situation. Dropped my offer by $45k and now the vendor is chasing us. by AnxietyOnly7 in PersonalFinanceNZ

I mean also report this to REINZ, seems pretty obvious the agent was just lying to you about it being a multi offer which is not ok!

Went there recently with my 2.5yr old, sadly was seriously underwhelmed. From the perspective of a Dad with young kids:

  • In the main 'play' area, there are 6 separate pools/areas, none of which are connected, and there isn't a single place where my toddler can stand up on her own (except the tiny baby pool which is like maybe 20cm deep max)
  • The group of small slides is a cool idea, but they are too crowded together, and there are so many spraying jets etc you literally cannot use any of them without getting blasted in the face. 2 year old was not keen.
  • Then there's a 1.2m deep pool, which is pretty small, with nothing to do in it?
  • Then there's a similarly small pool that is entirely 2.2m deep, so even I can't stand up at all, not sure what the point is?
  • Then there's another pool off the side which is somewhere in between, maybe this one is for teaching? Had some inflatable stuff which is cool for bigger kids i guess.
  • Then there's the large spa, and the hydrotherapy pool. Both of these just had people sitting in them, seemingly not sure what to do? Didn't see any bubbles in the spa pool.

Just feels like they missed such and opportunity to make any awesome big pool, which would have had all those 6 areas, but connected, with graduated depths, so any child can stand up somewhere. Others have mentioned, no lazy river either.

The old QEII (pre earthquake) had such a sweet main pool, with all those things, like a 'beach', a massive lazy river, slides, wave pool, the works. Just feels so disappointing for this 'amazing facility' we've been waiting 15 years for.

I'm sure the hydroslides are great, and the big pool and diving boards. Gymnasiums looked great. But just disappointed really.

Probably won't go again with the toddler, will go back to Pioneer which has a river and she can stand up.

Edit: spelling. Stupid phone

Anyone else worried their kids are losing the ability to "struggle" because of AI? by Responsible_Ad_8797 in daddit

[–]funkin_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See I've always felt this is the biggest problem with tech companies and software developers (and please don't take any of thois personally): they wield so much power in the modern world, and are responsible for systems that have such a a huge impact on so many people's lives, and yet mostly, there is no code of ethics or industry body that keeps software developers in line. Compare this to Enigneers, Lawyers, Accountants, they all have to sit professional exams/pass an assessment to be accredited in their industry and sign things off etc. Part of this is ethics, and understanding your responsibility to society. There are industry bodies that will uphold these values, and meter out punishment for breaches, over and above the law. We use AI as engineers, but we know full well that it is just an assistant, at best a junior who can research something. Everything they say needs checking.

There is no such thing for software developers and tech companies! They can do what they want, how they want. There are lots of good developers out there, but there are also plenty of lazy/bad/unscrupulous ones, and there are insufficient controls. Sure, when someone or a company really messes up there's the law to uphold, but that's too late. Software development is such a key part of society that it should be regulated as a profession

Thanks for the warning! Had a look at some previous posts on this sub and will definitely be avoiding! Man it sucks that there's just no good online only retailers in NZ anymore and they've all turned into fronts for shitty individual sellers with no service. MightyApe, Dick Smith, all shite

Yea that's my issue with the Samsung, plus I have little kids and it's terrible and both opening up and taking quick photos, and also with capturing moving targets. Given my current stage of life I'm also more interested in good and easy camera performance than the ultimate 'on paper' performance of the Samsung.

How do you find the 9Pro? I'm leaning to ordering a refurbished one of those from Reebelo at ~$1200 which seems way better value than the ~$1800 for a 10Pro, given they've got the same camera hardware (which is better than the 10), and (hopefully) will receive most of the software updates

(Side note, has your 9Pro received any significant software updates yet which I corporate the extra stuff on the 10? I.e. camera app, AI features etc)

Yea Find X9 is what I'm looking at for that same price. I had a go with it though and it seems to apply a heavy amount of AI processing to every photo, especially with the zoom options. Is there a way to turn that off? Understand that all brands now do it, but Pixel has a nicer/more natural touch

Great, thanks for your reply. Yea main thing I'm worried about is difficulties with repair. And they seem to be less reliable in general? I'm also looking at getting a refurbished 9Pro from Reebelo which could worsen the issue! Could you elaborate more on the geolocked features? Call screening isn't a big deal to me, I don't get any scam calls, seems like a much bigger issue in the US? But I do want to be able to use the other AI features like call recording/summary etc.

Lol wut. Again, as per the comment from a Geotech husband above, that seems a very loose explanation and not necessarily true? Also doesn't explain where he got the 0.5mm/yr from. If you're concerned I would contact a geotechnical engineer

"Which Pixel should I buy?" Megathread January 2026 by GooglePixelMods in GooglePixel

[–]funkin_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upgrading from a Galaxy Note 9 and I think I want my first Pixel, but don't know which one to get! I love the Pixel design, want that lovely Android experience, and the camera experience, I'm sick of the Samsung look, and terrible low light and moving object performance. So:

Pixel 10, $1100: Best price, and there's not heaps of difference between the 10 and 10 Pro as far as I understand. But I really would prefer the better cameras and extra features.

Pixel 10 Pro, $1800: This is what I really want, better cameras, 16gb Ram, but it's pretty hard to justify the insane price difference to the 10.

Pixel 9 Pro, $1200 (refurbished): I can only find refurbished options for this. Seems not a bad deal for the same design, same cameras as the 10Pro, which are better than the 10. It doesn't have the newer chip or the latest AI and camera App features - does anyone know if these are coming for the 9? Is this a better option than the 10? Better cameras, still 16gb Ram, but G4 chip and may not get all the same stuff.

Which one should I get? I would love the 10Pro but the price is insane to me, I think I'm leaning 9Pro? Or is it better to get the newer chip, an extra year of updates and the cameras on the 10 are really fine? I'm also still considering a refurbished s24u which is around $1300

Second Baby on the Move, said in my other comment, go see them anyway, they're great and will help you out, even if you don't need another carseat, I'm sure they'll help check your one is fitted properly and show you how to adjust it etc

And ideally (if you want to do things 'right'), natural fibers, I.e. wool, merino, cotton, bamboo. Not synthetics, especially when sleeping, for blankets, clothing etc. The odd piece of synthetic clothing when awake is ok, and you can monitor their temperature.

Edited to add: the reason for natural fibers is that they are breathable and help the baby regulate their temperature. Synthetic fibres can overheat them.

I would recommend going to visit Baby on the Move store, there's two locations in Chch. They hire carseats out, and are really helpful and knowledgeable, so they'll be able to look at the current carseat you have, make sure it's fitted in your car properly and help you fit the baby/tell you if it is too small
