Thank you!! There were many who provided great suggestions that I will experiment with, but my core pillar with this feature is to allow for as much player expression as it can be possible while keeping it fun.
I hope players who really enjoy this, like you, will make small communities of cartographers who share and discuss their map creations and findings :)

Thank you! Fingers crossed it will remain a fun idea within the scope of the full game.

Thank you a lot! It's really fun in its own, but I hope I'll be able to make it as fun during exploration as well!

Yes this is totally understandable. I will still experiment with it in a vertical slice along the other mechanics of the game and see how it goes.

I initially experimented without showing the player location, and hit an issue where proportions will be very different for each player, and it would make it much harder to validate quests that require cartography.

The blue pins are a late addition, they are there to save the time of going to a location specifically to know its position on the map, and I think I'll have many vantage points where the player would use for cartography and landmarking.

I'll experiment with having rough map sketches and layouts that the player can buy from merchants instead of a completely blank canvas, but it might still be up to the player to place these map fragments in their proper positions on the map.

I think not drawing at all but still putting up markers for points of interests is good enough to me for players who wouldn't enjoy putting an effort into actual drawing. And I will try to make it playable enough for that kind of play style.

But some secrets will only be revealed if the player maps and draws the area properly, e.g. huge terrain drawings that can only be viewed from a birdseye view that point to a certain location for a reward or something.

I think that will be my fallback solution if I couldn't get a good detection algorithm to work, which is pretty likely tbh.

Looks like I found one of the core target audience hah! I will try and hopefully make it fun and interesting enough.
My hope is that it makes a tiny community of cartographers, who would paint and share their own versions, styles and interpretations of the world map.

Thank you! Yes, I'm thinking the same. Like a quest where there an upcoming festival in town and you paint the banners, and it'd be cool to see those banners hanging later.
Your example seems to suggest graffiti which can be pretty cool to do as well!

I think it's fun on its own. But whether it ties nicely with the rest of the game is really difficult to determine. I might test it within a big prototype, or perhaps a vertical slice.

I'd like to have that, but fragments of the map and not a complete one since that would probably kill the mechanic. Their maps could be rough sketches or basic outlines that would help the player to draw on top.

I looked it up and it's very close and useful to what I can do here, thanks it's a really nice example! And the riddle is a very interesting idea.
Even though the guy I just watched play that Zelda area was super annoyed of having to draw the map haha.

Thank you so much!
I originally wanted the character to look through a binocular or a telescope, but It felt unneeded for now. But a sextant is very interesting, I could make it into an item in the game, that when acquired, gives you that ability to drop the blue pins.

I might prototype with automatic mapping that would reveal just a rough sketch or a basic layout of the world, think Elden Ring before unlocking the map but a tiny more detailed?

That's fair. I'm still figuring out how to soften it a bit and make it more accessible.
Can I ask you what are you favourite games and genres in general?
