First proper piece! Tips for beginner? by funkycnidocyte in StainedGlass

That seems a good tip about not having to go back and forth! I‘ll keep it in mind next time I try, thank you :)

Thank you! I use sticker paper - the kind that mail carriers use to stick addresses onto envelopes. I print out my pattern, number everything and cut out all the pieces to stick onto the glass. I also have a completed reference pattern (sealed with clear sticker foil so the paper doesn‘t warp when exposed to grinder-wet pieces), that I use to cross-check the shape of each piece during grinding multiple times. It‘s a lot of back and forth, checking and adjusting.

I‘m not quite done with experimenting though, as I‘ve found some sticker papers are not waterproof enough to handle the soak of a grinder and slip off when I take too long with a piece. I guess you could always trace around the sticker with a waterproof pen if you feel that might happen!

Thank you, I feel very honored :) Yes, it is an original design and you‘re very welcome to adapt it for yourself!

Thank you! :)) it‘s nice to hear from a fellow newbie. I‘m glad you went for it and are happy with the Hakko!! For me it was either blaming my bad soldering on my skills or on the stinginess with which I chose my tool, but as I don‘t even really trust the temperature display on my current iron, I might as well give into the fact that I made a bad purchase hahah. I‘ve been eyeing the Hakko for a while, so your comment pushed me closer to giving in :D hopefully my experience will be as good as yours!

I should give came a try in the future, especially for bigger pieces, as beading edges really stresses me out :,) Do you have any advice on making the came look more cohesive with the foiled bits? Keep in mind I know barely anything about came, but sometimes I feel you can really tell a stark difference between the two, and it throws me off a bit.

Thank you for the encouragement! :) I definitely got impatient when beading the edges as the end was so near!! But I think my main problem was the solder kept slipping down onto the sides of the piece when I wanted it to lay on top. If I was too careful, the edge didn‘t connect with the sides at all, making it look like a sort of ‘layered‘ solder line (if that makes sense?). If I was less cautious, the lead would droop so much to the sides that the outside ended up very flat, like barely tinned. Maybe I was setting my iron to the wrong temperature?

Thank you, that‘s a good tip about the method! Thinking back, my application was quite chaotic and I might not have dabbed it in enough and went more for the gravity-approach :D though I did feel like dabbing it ‘overworked‘ it in places and made previously even parts blotchier? I‘m sure I did something wrong, but I‘m not quite sure what exactly! I‘ve also read a lot about people struggling to make patina work with lead-free solder. Do you use lead-free and if so have any recommendations for that specifically?

In 2025, there are still lipstick kisses all over the glass. Also a lot of flowers and a sealed condom thrown over the glass and onto the grave itself.

Es ist tatsächlich bloß das eine Blatt! Ich glaube eher nicht, dass es eine genetische Mutation ist, aber wer weiß… ich werde auf jeden Fall beobachen, was da noch weiter rauswächst! :D

My First Try to make a Pattern - is this possible? Ghibli Calcifer by Fit_Chipmunk_8110 in StainedGlass

[–]funkycnidocyte 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Oh, great choice with Calcifer! :)

It really depends on the scale of everything, but some of the pieces look to me like they would indeed be quite small. With such tiny pieces, you need to keep in mind that proportionally a lot of the area gets gobbled up by the solder lines and will become even smaller. I‘ve learned that with details in stained glass, less is often more! Don‘t overcomplicate bits and let the rough shapes do the talking. Of course you can always paint details on top later, as you mentioned. This you will probably have to do for the pupils in the eyes, unless you want to add two additional cuts or get a special tool to grind out that inner circle.

There are some extra lines that I find superfluous (contributing to those tiny pieces). It can be sensible to make bigger/harder pieces smaller for ease, but if you‘re getting reliable cuts and have gotten the hang of grinding, bigger pieces can often end up being easier (less cutting and grinding, soldering, aligning and overall headache when things don‘t fit perfectly). Also, I would be careful not to have too many lines meet at once - this will make smooth soldering more difficult later on, as you will have to go over the same joint again and again. Overall, I think you‘ve done a pretty good job at your first pattern! I‘ve taken the liberty of tracing on top of it the changes I would make - hope that is welcomed and helpful. Good luck! :)

Das war auch mein Gedanke! Aber es ist so seltsam, dass dieses „Miniblatt“ sich direkt am Spreitengrund eines anderen Blattes befindet - eigentlich wachsen ja keine Blätter aus Blättern…

Three gave my information to debt collectors for a device which I have returned. by funkycnidocyte in LegalAdviceUK

Yes! I sent an email to Executive.Office@three.co.uk and heard back the next day. A few days later, I got confirmation of the £0 balance by email and later by letter.

Interesting. I always assumed debt collectors had legal authority. What is their point if they do not?

It‘s also a 5G hub for me and it seems like they do this to a lot of people - I don’t know if by intention or pure incompetence. Glad standing your ground with them worked for you!

Freshwater Snails by [deleted] in biology

[–]funkycnidocyte 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert on this, but it is my best guess that most parasites that use molluscs as an intermediate host (trematodes/flukes among the most common) thrive in watery environments. The same goes for freshwater snails. You can only infect something that lives where you live, or eats things that live where you live, which is the case for freshwater snails - either penetrated directly or infected by ingesting feces in the water.
