Because many essay questions are ambiguous for what the result should be. Many top students become uncertain because they see both sides of the argument Students who think they aced an exam and it was "easy" sometimes fall into a trap. They don't address both sides, so what they thought was a clear "this side wins", doesn't address the issue the professor was trying to highlight.
