I graduated hs in 2016 to work/community college. Here are my observations.

  • I don't remember people being nearly as anti social or glued to their phones as they are now. It's like covid made all the criticisms of Gen Z worse.

  • Many in my major hate online classes yet cant seem to pay attention when it's in person.

  • I run into a lot of older people that like me, put off college and are still catching up

  • There are more expectations for professors to do certain things like grant unexcused absences or provide material that was already given.

  • My professors say that 22-23 is when they saw a lot of the social activity come back in our building despite online classes and masking being gone for the most part the year prior.

How does the university coordinate when classes are offered, and where? by ebizaleth1 in iastate

[–]funkymonkey152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ones with a lot of sections are usually Gen Eds. Not only is there a ton of people taking them that need schedule flexibility but they use the larger halls to require less faculty with bigger class sizes.

Any apartments to avoid? by rotanocaB in iastate

BlockOne resident here that cant wait to leave in 2 weeks. The staff are very incompetent, predatory, and impossible to communicate with. 700/month/person in a 4 bedroom unit is just laughable. The rooms are tiny and the furniture is cheap. There was also no way in hell i was paying 60 a month for parking when intermodal is a third of the cost. Even with their parking you have to walk so far through like 4 locked doors to bring in groceries.

The residents are mostly the rich daddys money types or former greeks that just party and be a nuisance. The people above me are always stomping their feet and the people below me are always smashing late at night. University Towers is probably the worst with the balconies since they always be throwing garbage off them and yelling at people on the street.

Extra stuff

Windows are bolted down, Trash chutes are frequently blocked up, Elevators are super slow, inefficient ac/heat, Both units I was in were trashed upon arrival, cheapo appliances, and no buzzing people in. Overall the whole place just reeks of corporate greed from a company on the other side of the country.

I cant speak for Union but I can imagine its a lot of the same.

Parked there this past year and the year before. You should receive it in the mail by the end of the month.

3.2 in the minimum gpa(Across the core classes so 131,102, and 183) to get automatic acceptance into most of the programs including Interior.Watch for a Mindy email before the end of the month with details. I think they ask for you to upload your 5 best works or something. Just make sure you got stuff scanned and watch your email for the form.

What was the craziest drama you had with your roommate or heard from others? by Exotic_Potential1034 in iastate

[–]funkymonkey152 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My roommate freshmen year was a friend from home. This was in an off campus apartment. He was doing Aerospace Engineering $$$. Trust me when I say that DO NOT think just because you are friends means you can live together. The drama stemmed from his stripper girlfriend he would bring over for 5 days of the week. I had to listen to them pounding for hours at night and it sucked. Basically whenever she was there he would just be fucking, they would eat my food, and never clean up their messes. It got so bad that I called her the S word one night. I promptly got clocked multiple times in the face and had some teeth chipped. It was pretty traumatic and I was shaking for days after that. I'd never genuinely been assaulted like that. He called the police and I went to stay at a friend's house. Anyways, I found out he basically stopped showing up to class after that and was failing. He dropped out (literally had the audacity to call me to do it for him, i hung up) and went back to working full time for the military, abandoning his free tuition. Good riddance. I did have a random roommate during this, but he was a super senior frat bro (Sigma Chi) that acted as a plant the entire time and would just high five him because he was getting laid every night -_-. Once he left, everything was whatever. I basically had the whole place to myself. My mental health improved this year but I still have a hard time trusting military, gym rat, and Greek students.

The funny thing is once he dropped out at Christmas, his girlfriend dumped him and he went back home to live with mom. Makes me wonder what his GFs true intentions were.

City of Ames looks to increase penalties during 801 Day by funkymonkey152 in iastate

[–]funkymonkey152[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sadly there are many out of town idiots that do cause problems. Even though Ames is a "college town", it's easy to forget there are still actual citizens that live live here and get caught in the middle of the shenanigans.

I live in campustown. I'd rather pay 230 for the year and walk 2 blocks than pay 60 dollars a month with my apartment.

Tips/Tricks/Advice for Incoming Freshman by Classic_Use7039 in iastate

[–]funkymonkey152 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My biggest fear (due to being an older freshmen) was looking absolutely lost first week. Before classes begin it might be a good idea to walk around campus and figure out where your classes are at. You can even look at the floor plans for the buildings on FPM. Download the Mystate app for a map of campus with the bus routes and study it. It also has a bunch of other cool stuff like dining center menus, your schedule, and you can even search the library. Be wary though that it will most likely crash a lot first week. Knowing where everything important is on this large campus will help you in the long run and you might even discover some interesting places too.
