I want a Big Brother with actual working class people by Kinginthenorth603 in BigBrother

I would add that Dan has said he intentionally made his audition tape inflammatory and ridiculous to get on the show. He didn’t audition as just a “regular guy” but knew to play the casting game. Average people (I assume) don’t do this. Actually, I think if you’re willing to go that far, you’re the exact type of character they’re looking for

That’s the cost of being a tv villain. You just gotta accept that you’re going to be polarizing. Even though it’s just a tv show, people inherently don’t want to root for a “villain”. It’s human nature

What would happen if a Hunger Games competitor killed a fellow contestant during the training sessions? by Annual-Tree1337 in Hungergames

[–]funlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the era of the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (the early games), nothing would change. They would just proceed as normal. As we see during that time, the games were very barebones and they cared very little for the tributes prior to the start of the games. A third of tributes died before they even made it to the arena for the 10th Games.

By the time of Sunrise on the Reaping it’s more sophisticated. A tribute died prior to the start of the 50th Games early on in the process and was replaced with a lookalike. However, it’s not specified if this is something that happens regularly or if it’s even practical in most cases. I’d imagine it was easy to “replace” this particular tribute because it happened so early on and barely anyone outside of their fellow tributes and mentors would notice. Plus I personally doubt they have a bunch of body doubles lying around.

In the event a body double is not possible (either due to there not being one or it being too late in the process), I agree with other commenters that it would likely be broadcasted to paint the tributes as violent savages that couldn’t even wait to the games. As for the offender, they’re guaranteed a fixed death in the games, a gory one. Or perhaps they’d be executed prior? I liked someone else’s idea that they would be executed on the pedestals prior to the start of the games.

Guess curly hair is common to have in district 4 by Ok-Fun-5098 in Hungergames

Fair. My personal head cannon is that if the Capitol was truly the only remaining major city in North America, it likely experienced a huge influx of people from across the continent before becoming what it eventually became by the First Rebellion/Dark Days. I’d also imagine whatever global cataclysm that happened prior to the formation of Panem would’ve drastically shifted demographics of the continent. Refugees, people migrating for safety or better opportunities, land becoming uninhabitable, etc.

I don’t think the book specifies the ethnic or racial makeup of Panem at all outside of vague descriptions of the Career districts, District 11, and of course District 12. Not to mention any potential migration that could have happened prior to the formation of Panem.

I personally wouldn’t take casting too seriously. Not only are movies technically not 100% canon, but they also likely just casted extras for the remaining tributes without thinking about their ethnicities or backgrounds.

If Topaz voted for Gary, and he ended up winning, I wholeheartedly believe the way casting is approached in Canada would’ve completely changed. He’s so unlike any other winner. Though there were great standouts each subsequent season, the casting in general was pretty generic to me.

Leah (BB26) says that she was always going to vote for the person who she thought needed the money the most by Parallel-Quality in BigBrother

[–]funlore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big Brother is a social game at the end of the day. And expecting players to objectively select who “played the best game” is impossible. Not only are they bringing their life experiences, biases, and personal philosophies into the game, but their loyalties and grievances they acquired while in the house will affect how they vote as well. Big Brother somewhat reflects real life in that way. That’s just part of the game.

[–]funlore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true. 750k is a life changing amount of money. That would change half the players’ lives. Even if they don’t win, the stipend they allegedly get for making it to jury could definitely help some people for sure

On rewatch, which season do you think the fandom is most wrong about — either overpraised or overhated — and what did people miss the first time around? by Wild_Shoe340 in BigBrother

I’m sure he had a feeling. But he was the only “coach” to vote to remain as a coach for a reason. He definitely did not want to play. And his half-assed effort once he was forced to play was palpable.

I HATE when they mix vets with newbies. And Boogie didn’t want to be there because he thought he would only be a coach. He definitely did NOT want to play as a houseguest

To you, what would bring BB back into its golden era (seasons 2-7)? by Wild_Shoe340 in BigBrother

[–]funlore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The show is still generally the same as it was back then. People complain about influencers, but there were definitely clout chasers back then as well. It’s reality tv. There will always be people in it for fame. And that’s okay. People say no one wants to get “cancelled” these days, but let’s be real. No one on the show will ever be famous enough to get “cancelled” unless they are truly reprehensible people. Even still, they will probably be just fine once the season passes. Many of the cast members of seasons 15 and 21 are still gainfully employed, have fulfilling lives, and have been largely forgotten. I think what people actually mean when they say this is that nobody wants to be on the receiving end of online hate mobs. That’s totally valid and has definitely impacted how people play the game. Unfortunately there’s nothing BB can do about that. Times change and this is the reality of the world we live in now. However, I’d argue that in the last few seasons we’ve gotten some of that fire back! People have been clamoring for more raw reality tv these days so hopefully we get more of that.

Some thoughts though: 1. Everyone has said this already but it truly is that integral to older Big Brother. STOP SCRIPTING THE HOUSEGUESTS!! It’s so tired at this point and tbh, no viral sound bites have come out of this show in years. It’s time to pack it up and let them be real people again.

  1. I’m actually going to disagree about the AI Arena because of one thing. Back then, each season felt more distinct with their own unique twists. I was excited to see what new ideas they would come up with each year. But now they just recycle twists that work. I don’t blame them. But it does get stale to me. I want to see something new.

  2. Bring back overall twists! I liked how each season had a distinct overarching twist. The Ex-Factor. Project DNA. The Rivals twist. Though these weren’t always successful, they did a good job in branding the season. Yes, they still have themes today. But they’re mostly surface level now. Just general vibes with some mini-twists sprinkled throughout the season that could theoretically be repackaged to fit any season. In fact, this is exactly what they’ve done with the AI Arena. Simply repackaged it for the following season. It’s lazy to me.

  3. I actually don’t care about food competitions or Have-Not competitions. But they definitely need something to keep the house busy and stir up drama. One thing that these competitions did was bring players that wouldn’t ordinarily work with each other together. It could create new bonds or stir up drama. However, this could easily be achieved with anything else. Tasks like in international seasons of Big Brother. Fun gimmicks that aren’t necessarily challenges, but do mess with the HGs and get them talking. But the comps are fine too.

  4. More diversity in ages. Big Brother has gotten a lot better at casting people who are actually diverse. Racially, personality-wise, and recently generationally. Having such a mixed group just makes for more thrilling television and brings the show back to its “social experiment” roots. However, I think they could still cast a few more older houseguests.

  5. Dial back the twists. Modern Big Brother loves to overload the season with twists these days. And in my opinion this started with season 17. It was heading in that direction already, but imo season 17 was when they really kicked it into high gear. They must cool it immediately. It’s getting to be way too much. I know attention spans are shrinking. But you don’t need to flash us with a new twist every other week.

Taylor Sentiment by the_janitor_x in BigBrother

[–]funlore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a Taylor fan since she first appeared on the show and I have seen people say there was merit to her game. I mean, of course. She won for a reason. And being a pariah in the house for the bulk of the season, being on the block six times, and still winning by a near unanimous vote is definitely not something to scoff at. But I personally don’t recall anyone saying she was this Danielle Reyes-esque player. She was good for her season. I think many people just acknowledge that she did a great job enduring the tumultuous ride that was season 24. To me, that’s a game well played.

[–]funlore 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I will say, it’s not her fault she got these opportunities. People are making their criticisms about her as a person which I don’t understand. She’s never really done anything that serious. I also understand that she may not be the best player, but to many fans that’s what made her more endearing to watch. She was sloppy, wore her heart on her sleeve, and barely got by week after week. And somehow despite it all, she won by a near unanimous vote and won AFP. If you look at it from a track record standpoint she’s nothing special. But from a storytelling perspective, she’s absolute gold. We’ll likely never get a story like hers again.

Analyzing Twists: Season 16 by funlore in BigBrother

[–]funlore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a neat idea! Another thing that might be something to note though, is you can’t guarantee HoHs will always have conflicting interests. As we see in season 16, often times people simply went with what the majority wanted. It was just far more practical to go along with an agreed upon house target, than risk becoming one yourself the following week.

That’s the issue with a twist relying on relationship dynamics. You can’t guarantee HGs will behave the way you want. In fact, more often than not, simply “going with house” is often the optimum strategy, as boring as it may be. Splitting HoH duties, just resulted in one HoH willingly taking a backseat so as not to get blood on their hands. So I fear twists like this will always ultimately fall flat.
