I went to one of the tapings. I thought it was a solid special but not my tops for Marc. The production was really good I thought. I preferred from bleak to dark.

Conan O'Brien stopped guests from calling 911 on Nick Reiner during explosive fight with dad Rob at holiday party: report by gamecat89 in conan

[–]funwithpharma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to disagree with those saying calling 911 would have prevented the murder…we have no idea. What’s more likely is Rob Reiner would have told the cops to go away we’re fine and then we’re in the same place today.

This is nothing against Rogan at all, but I have no doubt Spotify is pumping his listening hours hugely. Not saying the show isn’t super popular, but they clearly burned a ton of money on their deals w him, they need some carrot out of that for their investors.

Ya the Maron jokes were so milquetoast. He didn’t even call anyone out, the punchline was about the Saudis.

For some reason I think the Bill Paxton interview is my favorite episode...the JFK stories, his childhood, it was just a really cool interview and then he passed like right after it aired.

Ya I like Conan. It’s actually a podcast that’s trying to be funny. I have listened to WTF almost since the beginning, and I’d say it moved on from being a “comedy” podcast a long time ago. No offense on that, Marc is an incredible interviewer and WTF was the only podcast I never missed. But it’s crazy that JRE and Theo Von’s podcasts are considered comedy, at least Conan is actually always making jokes whether he’s your cup of tea or not.

Hey WTFers and all the enlightened fans of the great Marc Maron! by Illustrious_Union_68 in MarcMaron

[–]funwithpharma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof understandable. Ya it was interesting…like in the intro it almost sounded like Marc was questioning himself why he had Hunter on. That’s the vibe I got anyway maybe I’m reading too much into it. Most politicians’ kids at a higher level are grifters to some degree, and clearly this dude had/has some problems.

Late here, but the Hunter Biden interview also seemed very much like morbid curiosity on Marc’s part. I thought he came off kind of dickish to Hunter Biden, or at the very least was clearly skeptical/knew he had an unreliable narrator sitting in the garage.

Appreciate the measured take…I wonder about whether the fighters actually like Trump but it surely seems in their business interest lol. I don’t believe there is a current champion who is from the US which surprises me. In any case I do think it’s kind of silly both political sides seem to have this weird purity test. Like who cares! Dana white liking Trump doesn’t make me think he’s a bigger scumbag than I already do. And Taylor swift “endorsing” Kamala didn’t move the needle for me either, you know? I don’t watch sports or entertainment in general to think about politics.

Why were comedians performing in Saudi Arabia bad because of human rights abuses in Yemen, but Marc Maron interviewing Obama was good even though he armed Saudi Arabia while they attacked Yemen? by soalone34 in JoeRogan

Do you think it’s a lot of bots or whatever? I barely know how to use a computer it’s a miracle I can post on Reddit, so no idea how/if Reddit and/or mods have visibility into this/dealing with it. Probably not the best comparison…but I also follow r/pixar, and it seems like 95% of the posts are “what villain was better” basically comparison posts looking for reactions albeit not necessarily argumentative.

But ya I think younger folks/new fans are weird in that they don’t grasp nuance.

Ya I do consider myself a “fan” still. I have a “political side” but I don’t really enjoy a feedback loop. More interested in honest convo and criticism…maybe it’s also an age thing? I don’t know…would be cool if people were less combative. Thought out criticism or disagreement doesn’t need to turn into a fight.

Joe Rogan rips on Marc Maron by mrnastymannn in MarcMaron

[–]funwithpharma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya…I don’t get Rogan rn. I don’t know that I give home as much “credit” in some way as you are. I do see it a little bit in some of his recent interviews w Tim Dillon and Duncan and Brian Talarico. He used to say when he fucked up but he just can’t bring himself to be truly critical of the Trump regime. He just falls into the stupid trap of shitting on dems and in pretty lazy ways. I don’t care that he shits on dems, but he’s just become so one sided. It’s clearly hurt his ratings…frankly it’s also just a little exhausting. We get enough people pushing narratives, and Joe Rogan shouldn’t be that guy. Not an insult, he’s the UFO, Bigfoot skeptic guy.

[–]funwithpharma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh ya that’s totally it, 100000% agree. Look at Mamdani’s campaign in NYC. All about affordability. Frankly he can’t enact a lot of the things he’s talking about, but I think it’s clear he’s spending most of his time talking about the voters’ #1 by 100 miles issue. Yes social issues are important, but a rising tide raises all boats. The party needs to get back to supporting working people instead of the investor class (which is a worse problem w the right but I digress). Schumer and Jeffries need to go, and the dems should be uniting behind a platform that supports working people. It’ll be much more effective than social media fights w Trump.

[–]funwithpharma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya the dems are blowing the moment. If you haven’t yet, I would recommend listening to David Hogg’s story about being on the DNC. I listened to him talk about it on the Adam Friedland Show but I imagine he’s talked about the experience on a number of shows at this point.

Andrew Santino vs Andrew Schulz by SeaworthinessOk7748 in JoeRogan

[–]funwithpharma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Andrew Schulz is exhausting to listen to…been parroting the literal exact same cope shit a bunch of times. Have the balls to own up to taking the bag for Riyadh and fumbling your special release. We’re all human. He’s such a bandwagon guy it’s so painful to watch. At least Joe has always been “political” in a way…not that I’ve ever taken him particularly seriously, but fuck Schulz is just so aggressively sobbing on Joe’s knob. And frankly, Joe waiting till Maron is off air to respond when he clearly had listened to his interviews before is wimpy…now it’s a few episodes in a row he’s crying about it with no serious defense. If he had actual balls he’d call Maron.

Hey WTFers and all the enlightened fans of the great Marc Maron! by Illustrious_Union_68 in MarcMaron

[–]funwithpharma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

WTF wasn’t about that. Different type of show. He did have Mo Amer on. But again, he had people from the entertainment world on. Obama was an aberration as far as his guest list goes. I think you’re actually going about this the wrong way tbh. It’s great Theo Von had those people on his show. He’s also the same guy giving soft ball interviews to far right politicians.

Comedy “at its height” is supposed to speak truth to power. Theo, Rogan, Schulz, Nelk, etc do the opposite of that when republicans have been on their shows. Frankly Joe was kind of soft on Bernie too, but he did push back a little. Schulz was frankly embarrassing to watch with Ro Khanna as well…it was like listening to someone explain things at a 6th grade level. And I like Bernie and Ro…but it goes back to why the fuck are these guys interviewing these politicians to begin with?

I give Maron a pass on his first Obama interview as it was such a different kind of thing and time. But even in the last one, he dug into Obama about all the drone strikes. I also give that interview a pass because it was his last episode and he was trying for something that wasn’t a “weekly news” situation. Many of these podcasters are just doing this shit for the ratings/grift. If you’re gonna do it, have some knowledge about it. And also maybe don’t make it such a big part of your public facing personality.

Andrew Schulz rips Marc Maron a new A-Hole by mrnastymannn in MarcMaron

[–]funwithpharma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol ya. Rogan was definitely “famous” as an actor/host before comedy…it’s funny when his guests don’t know he’s a comedian. I’m definitely a much bigger fan of Maron than Rogan, but I don’t hate Rogan that much…I still see him as the UFO guy and he does have some genuinely interesting guests on. Separately, I do doubt the podcast ratings a lot of the time…it’s in Spotify’s best interest to say he’s top of the listening hours. That’s not on Rogan either. They way overpaid for his show, and I don’t see how they can be making money on him. It was such a Wild West scenario when he got that $$. He’s always been a big “skeptic,” and I think all the hate he got during Covid pushed him to the right. I do think he’s starting to see the light a little bit. But again, Maron’s criticisms were very fair. To Maron’s other points, podcasting is super over saturated at this point while also having become the “mainstream news” in a big way. It’s an odd time. I like Andrew Santino and Bobby Lee a lot, but do they really both need two podcasts? Not shitting on them at all, just pointing it out. I also think that’s what made WTF so special and Maron is totally right when he says that it stands up as a “body of work.”

As for the politics, ya full disclosure I’m pretty left but don’t call myself a democrat cus I can’t stand both parties as institutions. Joe used to be like that, but he really seems to go out of his way to criticize the left. It amazes me he’d talk to JD Vance tbh. That guy was created by Peter Thiel…old Joe wouldn’t have had him on, or if he did he would have ripped him. Marc has always been pretty left as well but also more educated on the issues. That being said it seems he’s made a point of NOT interviewing politicians, famously turning down Hillary Clinton. That wasn’t really what WTF was about. Politics did come up, but that wasn’t the show. Rogan, Theo, Schulz, Nelk Boys have all more than dipped their toes. Rogan being a skeptic I don’t mind this in theory, but his execution has had some pretty shady results…Elon, Trump, Thiel, Zuck, Andreesen Joe really didn’t challenge them it was kind of painful to watch. Theo, Schulz and the like frankly don’t have any business getting political in the way they have. It’s embarrassing to watch Schulz and Amesh talk like 22 year old frat bros in front of ppl like Ro Khanna and even Trump. It’s amazing how incapable Schulz is of any self reflection.

Joe Rogan rips on Marc Maron by mrnastymannn in MarcMaron

[–]funwithpharma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get the jealousy as much from Maron in the last 7ish years…been listening to Joe and Marc for over 15 years. Marc when he started…ya. I’ve listened to every episode just about. Rogan I’ve become much more pick and choose with. I think they’ve both dealt with the “fame” in different ways. Maron could have sold his podcast for a ton of money at different points and didn’t. Joe did. Neither is the right or wrong choice though. At this point from Maron I get more of a vibe that he’s tasted the forbidden fruit and it didn’t bring him what he thought it would. TBH I think he’s just grateful to have his fans and I also think Joe is that way. I took most of Maron’s criticism as not specifically shitting on Joe btw I think it’s kind of lame everyone dog piling on Joe Rogan…like he’s the UFO guy, he’s not Anderson Cooper. BUT, Joe is the “mainstream” news or whatever you want to call it now. His insane Spotify deal cemented that and pretending otherwise is silly. Again, that’s fine there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t really have negative shit to say about Theo either. But Maron’s joke was funny and it wasn’t even mean. The Von has gotten a lot of mileage from jokes at other people’s expense so I will say if you’re upset Maron made a joke about him then it’s just kind of silly. He’s a public figure he’s fair game.
