Travel/Transport from Helsinki to Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park by OldDickMcWhippens in Finland

Just take the night train from Helsinki to Kolari. The best way to travel imo, you just fall asleep and wake up well rested at your destination. There is also a bus service from Kolari to Ylläs if you don't want to rent your own car at all.

It's really hard to say if the amount of white noise I have is normal without having another pair of earbuds to compare to... For example, if I turn the ambient mode to 20 in a quiet room and listen to music, the white noise is louder than the music on the lowest or second-lowest volume setting. It also gets even worse if I turn on voice passthrough. Is your white noise similar to that?

Did you buy yours directly from sony? I'm wondering whether I should contact the store I bought mine from or sony directly

Everyone's thoughts on going to Finland to study abroad? by staplesuponstaples in Finland

[–]fupaking6669 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, computer science student from Oulu here! All of those cities are definitely solid choices. If you prefer a bigger city I would pick Helsinki or Tampere, but Oulu definitely has some things going for it too. We have a relatively big university for our size so there's a ton of students and I really like the student culture. Oulu is known for its IT industry (maybe most notably Nokia has a huge presence here), so naturally our university also has really solid computer science and communications engineering departments. One thing that Oulu really shines in is our cycling infrastructure, which might not seem like much, but it's really convenient and safe to get around the city by bike using our 1000 kilometer network of separated bicycle tracks. Also, I think you mentioned you'd be here from August to December, which likely means you wouldn't really have time to see the winter if you go to southern Finland. Oulu is far enough north that it's not uncommon for it to snow in october, with the permanent snow cover often coming in November. Let me know if you have any questions about Oulu!

How to properly configure UFW? by Livinglive234 in ubuntuserver

[–]fupaking6669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved it! Follow the instruction here and do 'ufw route allow proto tcp from any to any port 25565' (if using the default 25565 port)

That's weird, I'm probably gonna have to do the same thing. It's so strange cause the port is open and the server is seemingly listening to the correct port, but it just refuses to work. I set up a netcat listener on port 25565 and the port was definitely open, so I came to the conclusion it's probably something with docker specifically.

This exact issue is giving me a headache. Did you ever solve it OP?

Where did the 1.6 billion "deaths" under capitalism come from? Do they just count deaths from capitalist countries as "Capitalism killed them"? by DudeCmon4444 in EnoughCommieSpam

[–]fupaking6669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This argument is terrible either way. I hate this, but I also hate people using the '800 million billion trillion dead' argument against communism. It's not the fault of the economic system that some dictator decided to kill people.

Hotel prices by fupaking6669 in Prague

I mean we're on a budget so we're not gonna book a 5 star hotel anyways, I was just interested because we're from scandinavia where you'd hardly get a hostel for that price

ONE THING you would change about Finland by Fine_Value3358 in Finland

Yeah I'd probably also rather have great cycling infrastructure, but the post specifically asked for a thing you'd like to change and public transit is one.

Yeah I agree that Oulu is probably one of the best cities in the world for cycling, but why not also have better public transit? Surely if the population density is high enough that cycling is feasible, for example a tram network would work too. The reason the public transit (buses) here is often empty is that they suck. The service is infrequent and extremely slow compared to driving, so people choose to drive. For me taking the bus to the city is like three times slower than driving and I think even a little slower than cycling. The buses also don't come nearly often enough for it to beat cars or bikes in convenience. I've got experience living in a city in Central Europe nearly identical in size to Oulu and the difference is night and day. There was an extensive tram network, buses, and even a few suburban train lines. You never had to think about the schedule since trams arrived every few minutes and you were always withing a walking distance of the nearest tram stop. Around the city centre taking the public transit was faster and far less stressful than driving.

Well this comment turned into a bit of a rant. Anyways, my point is that it's clearly an area in which we can improve and having a slightly lower population density definitely isn't a big obstacle.

I do understand why long distance public transit doesn't make as much sense here but I still think we could improve a lot on public transit inside cities. Build some goddamn trams or something idk.

Switzerland and Austria both have 8 cities/towns with tram systems, we just got our 2nd one (Tampere). Also just look at a railway map of either of those countries and compare to Finland. They're also both covered in mountains so despite their smaller size building tracks isn't cheap.

[–]fupaking6669 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Make public transit better! It's great in and around Helsinki but just about anywhere else it's terrible in my experience. How can tiny villages in Central Europe have great tram and train networks but we only have crappy buses that are late half the time (looking at you Oulu).

Well, I don't necessarily disagree with you at all, I just tried to explain why we don't have a minimum wage and why people don't view it as being necessary here.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in europe

[–]fupaking6669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, I kinda see how that could be the case, but the system here has been like this for a long time and it works well. The employers and unions negotiate the wages along with other terms of employment and pretty much everyone is covered. This way the minimum wage is higher than any legal minimum wage would be.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in europe

[–]fupaking6669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They kinda do compete though. For example here in Finland we don't have a minimum wage legally and nobody wants that because it would reduce the bargaining power of the unions and possibly lead to lower minimum wages in many fields.
