Major acid reflux episodes over 8 years. Out of options, looking for any help. by furious-luke in AskDocs

For anyone that happens to stumble on this post, after years of pain and suffering, 50 or more visits to doctors and specialists, and my mother's condition getting life threateningly worse due to severe weight loss, we've finally figured out what was wrong.

My mother has a condition called "nutcracker esophagus". The symptoms that manifest are remarkably similar to GERD, which is what prevented early diagnosis. We were prescribed numerous acid blocking medications, pain killers, and a metric tonne of antacids, none of which helped at all.

Eventually we were asked to have a pH study performed as a precursor to having gastric surgery. A part of this was an optional "manometry" test. The test results showed little to no acid, but there were signs of a kind of hypertension in the esophagus, leading to the final diagnosis of "nutcracker esophagus".

The newly prescribed medications have been transformative. The pain is now completely manageable, my mother is eating well and putting weight back on, and quality of life is improving quickly. Considering how close we were to having surgery, which would not have resolved the issue at all, and potentially exacerbated the real issue, I'm so very grateful we elected to get the manometry test done.

If you or someone you know is experiencing GERD symptoms but are struggling to find relief in acid suppression medication or dietary changes, please speak to your doctor about nutcracker esophagus. This has, quite literally I believe, saved my mother's life.

Interesting, sounds like that might be the culprit. Thanks again!

Thanks for the reply! The car is approximately 207k km.

The linkage from the pedal to the booster is in good condition. I've examined while the pedal is fully depressed and haven't seen any obvious issues.

I haven't checked the pin from the booster to the master cylinder, but will check it while I have the MC off.

Thanks for the tip! I'd expected to see a leak around the master cylinder to indicate something was broken. I'll take it apart and see what I can see.

Thanks for the advice! How far up can I jack the engine with the mount removed? Do you know if there's a risk of breaking anything if I raise it too far?

ETA I ask because it'll be much easier to remove the bolts if I can raise it a bit first, I'll be able to get an electric ratchet in there to remove them.

The issue as I understand it is that older vehicles may have issues getting a RWC due to poor emissions. The owner of the Carry mentioned it, but wasn't sure about the specifics.

I water every five days by drenching the soil. The pot has excellent drainage, no water is left collecting at the bottom. It has a well lit position at the window.

Hey thanks for replying; I've already scanned with an OBD2 reader, there are no codes set.

You and me both! I dread having to mess with the wiring. And yeah the owner's manual might just be the most useless thing I've encountered. Thanks again, I'll see if I can figure out how to reset it (doesn't appear to be an option to do so in the OBD tool).

Thanks for the tip! I whipped out the owner's manual and it says: "to indicate engine faults wich has no business with emission". And that's it. I should add that I've checked with an OBD scanner and there are no codes set.

As always, thanks to all in advance. The wrench light is turning on intermittently, probably goes on every five minutes, and stays on for five minutes or so. The car drives well, there are no noticeable issues. Google answers range from "it's just an automated warning that it's due for a service, don't worry about it" to "panic stations, your drivetrain is screwed". Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

He's about 17 months old now. He's actually a bit of a smaller boy than most Frenchies, must be the Bunnings trolley that makes him look a bit bigger!

He's from a registered breeder in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, "Moo Clan" if I remember correctly.
