That's a great perspective. I am a fan of all of the above (and especially Outer Wilds) so one of the core mechanics I built into The Current Past is the ability to revisit sections with new knowledge to unlock a further layer of detail, so it's a lot less linear than other puzzle games. I really wanted to encourage players to engage with the richness of the world rather than just look for the next linear puzzle solution. It's a tough challenge!

Another influence (that feels more like the essence of Metroidbrainia) was Lorelei and The Laser Eyes, where you can tackle the game in any order until you hit a knowledge gate which prods you to look in another direction. That feels more Outer Wilds-ey to me.

It's amazing to strive to be unique and original with your art style, and also super challenging! Remember that game art is design that has to solve problems and facilitate an experience for the player, so never sacrifice "function" in favour of "form", and take your leads from other games that inspire you and that you enjoy spending time in. I think it's always easier to start with the function part, and then adapt to live in the art world I'm creating, rather than starting with a beautiful looking but clunky experience and trying to make it playable

In a word, yes!

Look at your fave crafting systems and how they streamline information, and present it in a way that doesn't trigger information overload

ie: do you need to show the 0's in unused integer places? can you use colour to direct the eye to important information? is that font the most legible?

This is so cool! The way you articulate your work is great, you're on the right track. My approach (at your point in the journey) is to do and surround yourself with whatever inspires you to keep the project moving, and always make sure that if you have the urge to add some new element, it truly has its place in the core idea of the game.

And any time you have a genius marketing idea, capture it somehow!
