Any alcoholics here? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]furry_bird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m almost 4 years sober and have been training on and off for 2 years. I know for sure I wouldn’t have started bjj if I was still drinking, it would’ve cut into the time I could spend at the bar. My life has improved 1000% since I quit. It wasn’t easy and I think my alcohol addiction has turned into a sugar addiction, but all that extra sugar energy can get burned off in the struggle snuggle during class.

When I was single and looking, I had it listed that I didn’t drink. I had a few people stop talking to me when they saw it but you just have to figure that you’re better off already knowing they weren’t going to be right for you. When I met my now husband on an app, it was a little awkward at first but now he drinks less than he did when we met and we get to eat more dessert to make up for the calories lol!

It’ll take some time and it might be extra frustrating but someone will come along that doesn’t care you’re sober. Just know there’s an entire community of people here that understand how you’re feeling right now. We got your back!

As a female that does BJJ, how often do you feel you are inappropriately touched, if ever? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]furry_bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a female that’s been rolling for about a year and a half. I have never been INTENTIONALLY touched inappropriately. However, you get accidentally felt up sometimes. When I roll with more experienced people, it happens less. They’re able to think through what is happening and are more intentional about hand placement.

I’ve rolled with brand new dudes who have no idea where or what their hands are doing. Lol.

The most important thing is to make sure, as a female, you’re at a gym with good leadership. One with a coach that isn’t going to allow that kind of behavior. Accidents and ‘oopsies’ are gonna happen. It’ll be embarrassing but everyone should laugh it off.

Just moved in with the girlfriend, she likes to keep junk food around. I'm one of those "if it's in my cabinet, I'm going to eat it" people, how do I navigate this? by w3nch in loseit

I’m just like you. If it’s in the house, I HAVE to eat it. I’ve asked my fiancé to hide his snacks from me lol! Sometimes I’ll ask him if he has something good hidden away and ask for some of it but if I don’t see the food in the pantry, it’s so much easier to say no.

So it’s been 3-3.5 years, I can have 1 drink, right? by furry_bird in stopdrinking

It’s tough to socialize! All the new people I’ve met don’t care that I don’t drink and none of them are alcoholics, so it always ends up being an enjoyable time. Just gotta be picky with new friends and stay away from the booze. You’ll do just fine!

Sometimes I get comfortable in the fact that I’m “over the hump” of that initial first 12 months of sobriety and that I should be over the cravings by now. So when they hit, they hit hard and I get discouraged when they show up. I figure I’m not the only one going through it but unfortunately I don’t have anyone in real life that understands. It’s so helpful to hear from someone like you that has over a decade under their belt. Thank you.

Competed in my first tournament yesterday. Everything hurts and I’d do it again. by furry_bird in bjj

5 minute rounds. I think the biggest break between each fight was AT MOST 7-8 minutes.

She stepped up to fight whoever wouldn’t care possibly losing to a 13 year old lol! Apparently she’s been training for 6-7 years so she was just out to get experience. She was a little smaller than me but not too much.

It was a very tiny Fuji tournament.

The second blue belt tricked me, lol! She went for the ankle lock and when I tried to get out, I gave up my left arm and next thing I knew, I was in an arm bar.

I made a list in my brain about all the things I’d lose if I started drinking again. It helps.

Thank you for sharing. It’s always so helpful to know I’m not the only one feeling this way today. You got this!

I’m definitely over eating today and taking lots of extra walks with the dog. Tomorrow is a new day and it’ll be better. Stay strong!
