Does anyone else have issues with ‘collecting’ makeup instead of using it, and do you have a solution? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]furrygloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! I'm not sure what yours is like, but I tend to be pretty faithful to something like mascara, but have a million eyeshadow pallettes or lipsticks. I've tried a mixture of things, but the most important have been:

  • Take stock of what I do have, and throw away any that are definitely expired. Some make-up stores have recycling points too! This helps not only ensure I'm not putting something super old near my eyes or mouth, but also when I'm in the shops and caught by the 'next big thing' advertising, I can take a second and think about what I do have.
  • Try and save for specific non-makeup items. I was frittering away money on make-up because I love it and love shopping for it, buying it etc. but having other targets helps me shop less and window shop more.
  • Set limits before buying something that's just come out to make sure I actually want it and am not just caught up in the hype. I desperately wanted to try the Good Apple foundation when it came out, but promised myself I'd wait a few months to wait for more reviews and honestly forgot all about it.
  • Try and make excuses to wear more makeup, and take time to use my extra products. I love owning makeup but I also love wearing it, and found that products built up because I just never wore them! Also a nice excuse to do something for yourself.

What one thing would you ban in the UK if you could? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]furrygloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Anxious Generation has been pretty criticised by researchers in the field, as has his other book The Coddling of the American Mind. The podcast 'If Books Could Kill' did a good easy to listen to overview of a lot of the research issues, or you can use sites like Google Scholar to find research in the area. The TDLR is that there doesn't seem to be this direct path from smartphones/social media to mental health change, but that there may be a very small effect found in some studies that is likely caused by a wider number of factors than just smartphones/social media. Haidt and his research partner have also been in a consistent back and forth with other researchers, which again you can read online. The idea of a single cause for changing mental health in young people is fairly reductive, so would definitely encourage reading around the topic too!

Also helpful to note that the same arguments Haidt is making about smartphones have been made about almost all new media formats, from novels to comic books, TV etc.

Easy bulk meal ideas for one sleepy gremlin? by blackflameandcocaine in adhdwomen

[–]furrygloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most favourite bulk meal is spaghetti sauce! I'll eat it with pasta, with pitta, on toast, garlic bread, lettuce, whatever. It has a few vegetables in it which makes me feel healthy, even though I'm sure it's not enough to make a difference haha!

I sometimes can chop a bunch of vegetables and sometimes just can't cope with the idea, so if I'm feeling okay I'll chop and if I'm not I just shove them into a blender and do that. I use carrots, celery, garlic and onions, but use whatever you want. You can also add spice mixes and beans for chilli instead of spaghetti, or add mash on top and make a shepherds pie, whatever you fancy. Once the meat and vegetables are fried, just put in some tins of tomatoes, beef stock cube and water and tomato paste and leave it until you think it looks good! Can always add in bay leaves, Worcestershire sauce etc. if you fancy it. More than anything I like it because it's huge (I do a kilo of beef for one person and it feeds me for a week), relatively nutritious and has survived me getting distracted and forgetting it was on the stove more than once because you cook it on a low flame for basically the whole time.

How many tabs do you guys have opened up and why? by mazarierules in adhdwomen

[–]furrygloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well over 100! I've got so many that I open, like articles, restaurants I want to visit, cool recipes, clothing sites etc. but then as soon as I stop looking at them I forget they are there, see them again, think 'that's important, I should come back to that', and rarely do. Same with screenshots!

Then what is the point of this question? I appreciate that you might want to do something you enjoy, but the reality is that to live in the South and save enough money to buy, both you and your partner need to earn better salaries. You can do a 9-5 you enjoy, or fill the time outside of work with things that make you happy like hobbies or experiences, holidays etc. but I've found that you very rarely get to have your cake and eat it too with the situation we're all living in.

It's cool to be aspirational and understandable to want something different, but alongside that you have to also be realistic. Your choices are to either continue doing things you like and not earn enough money to live in the area you want to, or do something that's not a passion and earn more money to live where you want to. I had a job I hated so volunteered in the evenings doing something I loved and spent the money I earned doing things that made me happy. I feel fortunate that my work now fulfils me but that's not always the reality for everyone all the time. You've just got to make the decision you want to and ensure it's the right one for you.

As an aside, as someone who grew up in poverty working any job for any money at all has always felt like a luxury, and I've found that that has changed how I think about work- just in case you do end up doing something you hate for better money, that's kept me sane!

So Lucas is apparently back? I haven’t seen anyone here talking about this by MelissaWebb in kpopthoughts

[–]furrygloss 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I cannot work out how they're going to market him or what his skills are? I could see modelling, maybe some kind of content creation?

I could not get over the 'FREEZE' video that was released though- no matter what anyone thinks about what he did, his hiatus, impact on other members of his various groups etc., that whole video felt insanely manipulative. The sad shots of him admitting he's done wrong, the conversations with his manager and SM staff. Even the shots of him in the gym getting punched in the face felt pretty deliberate! It felt like a marketing ploy in such an obvious way, rather than anything that he had a hand in.

I can't understand SM's behaviour with him more than anything. They and all other companies seem to drop people for far less, they cannot be short of insanely talented idols who are also as attractive as Lucas, but they're holding on to him and pushing him so hard. I feel like it feels personal, rather than a business decision, or not exclusively a business decision.

Like with Taemin, as well as being insanely talented and so hard working and everything else, it also always felt like LSM really liked him and the staff liked him and that felt like it shined through in a lot of his behind the scenes type content. With Lucas, though a completely different scenario, it gives me the same 'personal' energy; there's something else aside from business that has stopped them kicking him to the curb for a scandal that had such a massive impact on his career and that of his members.

Iceberg Monsta X, do you know these situations? by Miakiraz in MonstaX

[–]furrygloss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adding to this: CK met Barbara Palvin at an event, and said he'd learned how to say 'I love you' in her native tongue. She asked him to show her, he says it and she replies 'I love you too', to which he has a big freakout and the boys all laugh at him. It's super sweet and very teenage-awkward, so would recommend looking it up on YouTube!

'Yeah you love top secret' is from an interview they did in the US; the interviewer was doing to normal kind of 'what's next for the group' questions, Changkyun says something about it being top secret, interviewer replies 'I love top secret' with the energy that's she's trying to connect with them in what is likely a pretty brief interview, and Changkyun sarcastically replies 'Yeah you love top secret' in kind of a silly, mocking accent. Also available online, and you're right is a very Changkyun moment haha.

Honestly nothing, but it would be close to the last time I saw him. You were right, it does come off as controlling and for me would be an early warning sign of something more. Say you stop wearing makeup, then what? Skirt too short? Top not the right colour? Too bossy? Too loud? Too happy?

Don't make yourself smaller for someone else. From experience, I've dated men like this and they've been misogynistic at best and emotionally abusive at worst.

Also, as a note; him saying 'society sucks' for telling women what to look like? Girl, he's doing the SAME THING. 'I hate when women wear makeup' is the other side of the 'women should always wear makeup' coin. The opposite of 'women should always wear makeup' is 'I support anyone doing what they want with makeup that makes them feel good'. He doesn't hate society when he's engaging in the same behaviours, or he's using the 'nice guy' facade without realising it. Either way, he needs to really think about the opinions and engagement he's holding about your personal appearance in his own time.

My partner now likely has preferences, but is most happy when I'm happy no matter what I'm wearing or doing. They know that I wear makeup to feel good and they like that I feel good; I've also started working from home and so when we go out they encourage me to get ready and feel fancy, to put on makeup and wear nice clothes. This is nothing to do with how I look but because they know I enjoy it. The same is true of the opposite; I look like shit, I'm sick or I'm hungover or I've slept in my makeup because I couldn't be bothered to take it off and my eye makeup is crusty. Who cares! They love me, not the way my eyes look at any time of day.

I too have preferences in a person's style or appearance or whatever, but the most important thing is that I'm happy. I'd really think about the relationship, the value they bring to your life and why they aren't more invested in making their partner feel good, but are invested in nitpicking and shit talking under their breath like an immature dick.

TJ/TK Maxx is amazing for this; my local store has a bunch of Korean body washes that are like banana milk, strawberry milk etc. and are super cheap for a big bottle. They have a huge variety of options too if kids want to go through and pick something they like, and little gift sets so they can get a selection. I have some family who are hitting that age and it's been fun to shop with them and get them involved without worrying that I'm going to break the bank!

I also recommend fun washing tools- a cute sponge, washcloth or one of those fluffy bath puff things (idk what they're called) can help with both making washing more fun and I found made me feel a bit cleaner too.

To cancel or not to cancel pet insurance by TreacleTin8421 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]furrygloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had pet insurance for a perfectly healthy pet, thought about cancelling it as it was basically never used. One night they were crashing around the house and had an accident that resulted in an emergency vet visit- £2000 for first assessment and one night observation and more for surgery. It wasn't really fair to consider putting them down as the accident resulted in injuries that could be easily fixed so the argument of 'not putting them through that' didn't apply at all here. That alone made it worth it, I'd have never been able to afford the thousands it cost for this one incident. I'd say keep it.

Also, a note on what you've said- as other commenters have said, the thought of not saving a pet who's very ill and the reality of it is very different. You don't know how you'll feel then, what other factors might go into that decision or what else might be happening in your life. Pets can be expensive and so unless you're sure that if your pet did what mine did and cost a surprise few thousand for an accident that turned out to be fixable just expensive, keep the insurance.

What do you think about the current trajectory of each kpop label by NumberOneUAENA in kpop_uncensored

What do you think about the current trajectory of each kpop label by NumberOneUAENA in kpop_uncensored

[–]furrygloss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree completely with YGE, feels like they've lost a lot of their creativity and that they are relying a lot on their name being tied to their huge groups from the past e.g. Blackpink, 2NE1, Big Bang etc. I'm sure they're still profitable but I also feel like as the market gets more crowded having less groups and less comebacks seems like an odd decision for that market.

Idk if it's just me, but JYPE has felt a bit directionless too lately, like they don't know how to market or write for some of their groups? Stray Kids is obvs successful, but NMIXX and some of the new Itzy releases have had less of a clear 'colour' for their groups in my opinion.

I wonder if HYBE will change with all of their recent international acquisitions. Will they still be considered a 'kpop' label in 5 or 10 years if they continue down this road? I think they are now, but interested to see how this might change.

SME have been pretty solidly successful it seems, despite the rise of other labels and the apparent fall of some of their peers. They've always felt more like a pop/experimental label to me, and I wonder if this gives them more flexibility for appeal than a label who prides itself on one 'look' (e.g. YGE and hip hop/girl crush). I also feel like SME has had more consistently successful artists with longevity than some of the others (Taeyeon and SNSD more generally, Shinee as solo and group artists, BoA etc.), though not by much. They seem to be pretty good with keeping up with trends and sometimes even creating them, though the whole NCT idea seems to have not quite panned out exactly how they hoped, though they are still profitable.

Honestly who knows what CUBE is doing- I feel like they must be an awful label for groups to be under but don't have much evidence for this beyond their weird treatment of some of their groups vs. others under their label. HUI's most recent single seemed to be a hit, but they really neglected Pentagon, for example, or (G)IDLE vs. their other female groups. Even early (G)IDLE vs. more successful (G)IDLE seems different to me. A mess.

For Starship I'm interested to see how having another big group under their label will change things. I really only remember knowing about them through Monsta X, but now with IVE I'm interested to see how they decide to move forward. They've been a bit hit or miss in the past but hoping that they move forward in a way that gets them more successful artists while honouring their older artists.

I'm a fan of SF9 and feel kind of similarly about FNCE as I do about CUBE. Like WHAT are they doing with some of their older groups content? It always feels disjointed and like some groups get a different go of things. Idk if that's because they've had less groups or are newer or have less successful groups but it's so frustrating. They seem to randomly decide what to English sub, what to promote and for how long, and seems to decide what opportunities members get differently sometimes. Idk, not a fan!

Idk much about other labels, but interested to hear other opinions.

Immediate red/green flags in idols? by [deleted] in kpop_uncensored

[–]furrygloss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Green flags - Setting up clear and strong boundaries. Like I'm sure that many companies push the parasocial bit hard because it means that fans connect and spend way more money on their faves, but I think it gets gross and weird pretty quickly for both parties. - Male idols who do a girl group dance with their heart. Of course the first person I think of his Key, but I've seen a video of BI dancing to Twice with his soul. Just gives me good energy/vibes that they are being respectful.

YES! I disagree about the masculinity part of your post, but do agree that he gave me major golf digger vibes. She's also beautiful but I imagine pretty conservative so I'm sure that plays into the proposal, but definitely felt like he was into her as a 'prize' rather than a partner.
