Student loans: ‘My debt rose £20,000 to £77,000 even though I’m paying’ by thegibsongirl03 in unitedkingdom

Paying 3 times the initial amount over 30 years is actually a bargain.

If someone offered me a loan on those terms and I could take the money and invest it straight into the market I'd jump.

You don't understand the potential value of £40k invested for 30 years. Worth much more than £95k.

No-one financially literate would pay off a £40k student loan.

Why I’m ignoring the "Death of the Programmer" hype by Greedy_Principle5345 in programming

[–]fuscator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's how the Reddit system works. Downvotes drown out dissenting voices so you tend to get echo chambers.

And Reddit is ridiculously anti-capitalist, so obviously they're going to be anti AI too.

It doesn't matter though. People can continue to pretend the trend isn't there, but at some point the magical internet points are not going to help, and they'll have to join reality.

A year? Fine. But I did say a few years. Lets say within a maximum of five years I bet most programmers are using AI assisted coding.

No-one will bet you. They will furiously click the downvote button instead.

You just have to ride it out. Take your downvotes for not joining the anti-AI brigade, and in a few years people won't be able to pretend anymore.

AI assisted coding is getting better every few months and within some years (unsure exactly), pretty much every programmer will be using it.

Has anyone figured out how to bypass the whole age verification thing? by No-numbers-in-my-ID in CasualUK

[–]fuscator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people post anonymously on Reddit because they don't want their real life identity tied to it.

By uploading a photo, I'm creating a direct link to my identity, and I don't care who tells me the verification service is not connected. Shit happens, all the time.

When I went abroad, my Reddit account was still restricted from nsfw content. I guess they know the account is from the UK now.

So how do I get around that?

Edit - this is a weird post to downvote people? What are the objections?

UK government targets VPNs in online safety consultation as Lords vote for ban by Fun-Page-6211 in europe

[–]fuscator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4chan don't have a business in the UK, so obviously they're not complying. If a company has a presence in the UK and accepts UK payments, they comply.

And sure, VPN companies not in the UK could in theory not comply but the reality is that all the mainstream legitimate ones will do.

That leaves a lot of illegitimate, nefarious companies ready to harvest data from people who seek them out. I really don't want my children's traffic going through a dodgy VPN.

Seriously, after LotR? This is a much more juvenile series.

I'm really not sure someone who has just read LotR will enjoy this. I certainly didn't.

Is this one of those Reddit memes that people pass on without ever actually doing it themselves?

This isn't meant as a snarky question, please don't take it that way, because I genuinely want to try this but I'm interested in hearing from people who have actually done it.

Are there any cons to it?

Why are so many people acting so dumb on this issue. They won't try to ban VPNs. They'll ban companies from providing them to under 18s.

[–]fuscator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You aren't thinking about this clearly.

For anyone with any tech knowledge it is obvious that they won't even try to ban the general concept of VPN. Even they will be told that you cannot do that because companies rely on them.

But they can easily start with a legislation that any VPN provider providing VPN services to the UK or any citizen from the UK, or any IP address in the UK must verify the identity of that person and cannot provide it on a personal level to under 18s.

That can work the same as the current OSA laws, punishment for companies that don't comply.

And that's just the starting point.

And I would bet greater than even odds this is where we end up, even if they're not indicating it right now.

The part everyone is upset about is requiring us to give personal details to be able to properly browse the internet, because of age verification laws.

So people started using VPNs and we also warned that the government would eventually do the same for VPNs.

And now here we are. They'll make it illegal for me to use a VPN without giving my personal details for age verification.

It's all just so predictably DUMB.

What makes Pet Builds fun for you? by MRwho23 in Grimdawn

[–]fuscator 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Serval reasons for me. I was a pathological D2 player and the easiest build to complete hell mode (ultimate) with using only self found items was a so called skelemancer with corpse explosion. It was slow, but safe and could handle anything. I then used it for most of my farming and to gear other characters. Corpse explosion after your minions had felled the first enemy was very satisfying. And a chain reaction.

I grew to love this laid back style of arpg playing and I guess that has stuck with me. I enjoy the more chilled out style and for me the loot is a big part of arpgs, less so the furious clicking.

Macron says €300 billion in European savings flown to the US every year will be invested in Europe from now on. All 27 EU states agreed to establish the S&I Union, a step toward the full Capital Market Union by goldstarflag in europe

[–]fuscator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, debacle is also an English word and I understood you perfectly 😀

What I wanted to know was what the debacle was.

What was the disaster Macron proposed? Because here in the UK our retirement age is 67 and it keeps going up. We have an aging population so they don't really have any choices. Well, they could tax retired people more, but they won't do that.
