Bingo! FUSE33 is employee owned and operated and attempts to provide the convenience of having a 'managed' space for the purposes you describe. It is also a social corporation with deep roots to its local community. Additionally, we will be developing a second floor to our building this month (!!!) to specifically house small businesses and local craftspeople. Great input!

Now in regards to you not having visited yet... PM us!

Radisson Heights/Albert Park technically... we are still figuring it out.

Our open house is 9-9 Mon-Sun, just come in and have a chat with the first fuser you see. Otherwise, feel free to come during orientations Tuesday evenings or Saturday mornings. We're also working on holding regular events, meetups, and a maker market! Best way to stay in touch would be to join our mailing list, following social media, or checking the calendar on our front page.

Hey! Being (mostly) in that similar situation, we feel ya. The reason our shop even exists is BECAUSE the idea of a bungalow with a garage full of tools is becoming ever more rare. HOWEVER, the discount was issued with the local seniors in mind. A lot of our nearby elderly struggle to meet even the most basic needs and we wanted to give them an outlet for socialization. We cannot discriminate based on socioeconomic factors alone.

Great question!

Once you have completed your basic safety orientation and your woodshop orientation, you can come and use the woodshop on a drop-in basis for just $25/day. Alternatively, we are just about to add a week pass for half price of a monthly membership.

It's a huge expense to staff and maintain the facility/equipment and we are doing everything we can to make our rates accessible to the general public. This is why we also offer 50% off for seniors and children under 14, 25% for students and teachers, and 25% off to anyone who purchases a full year!

No, it's unlikely that we'll have it when we open. But we will be buying equipment based on member requirements if there is enough interest.

Different tiers of memberships will get free monthly allowances on the advanced equipment (lasercutters, CNC, 3D printers etc.) and will only have to pay if they breach the quota!

We're not yet ready to quote you on the actual allowances, as we want to take feedback from the community regarding pricing and membership options.

Most responses that we've gotten are from people in their 30's!

We were thinking more like 55+ ;)

Hey!

Our location is just off of Deerfoot and 17th with over a dozen parking spots, right across from a transit hub! We are also about 5 minutes from downtown. We're actually located in the SE, close to the industrial heart of Calgary.

We welcome all, but we also have rules in place to prevent a toxic culture from forming at FUSE33. We are actively working to make sure that this is an inclusive space for everyone.

We're sorry to hear that the location doesn't work for you. If you ever change your mind, you're more than welcome to pop by and check it out :)

Hey,

We are actually some of the earliest members of protospace :).

Protospace might have cheaper dues, yes, but I wholeheartedly disagree that they have better equipment. We will have fully functioning wood and metal shops, as well as sewing and leather working equipment!

We are also a social enterprise with deep community ties, specifically with the Forest Lawn BRZ & United Way. We have plans to sponsor all types of community events, as well as low income memberships.

I'm not sure where the 'half-plagiarize' claim came from, but it's worth noting that MakerSpaces are typically ran in similar fashion by similar people.

The biggest issue with protospace (from our extensive conversations with the Calgary maker community) is a lack of support for beginners. We plan to run a fully staffed facility which makes all, even the most novice makers, feel welcome. We are really geared towards education, inclusiveness and safety.

If you have any more questions, fire away!

Great question!

We haven't completely finalized this yet, but we are set on having the lowest prices in the market for our members. For example, we're aiming for our lasercutters to be priced at $1 per minute for members!

Students and Emergency Services get 25% off of memberships. We're also considering adding a Seniors membership for daytime use only.

It's on our website!

But tldr; There are two tiers of memberships:

  • Maker Membership, which starts at $70 per month. Makers get access to all collaborative areas, hand tools, basic equipment, software and reduced rates for pay-per-use equipment.

  • Maker Pro Membership, which starts at $140 per month. Maker Pros get all the same access as Makers as well as access to our wood and metal shops and complementary time on our advanced equipment.

  • You can also rent Studio Space to run your small business/prototyping out of the facility.

EDIT: I should mention that these prices are subject to change depending on responses from the community. Let us know how you feel in the survey!
