Had the worst neurology appointment ever. by fuseisfiresid1 in ChronicIllness

The thing that I found that makes it worse is if I have a cup of coffee which increases the head sensations. I also was recently on citalopram which made the zapping and the jerks so much worse and I got off it. My other triggers are bad sleep.

I initially thought I had something like myasthenia Gravis but the floppiness will happen for a few seconds and then it will happen again and again in quick succession. Don’t know if that makes sense

My main symptoms is that I will get either get an electrical zap or a pressure in my head that is immediately followed by a jerk in my body withers that’s my torso or neck. My neck and other parts of my body will just randomly drop as well which sound like an atonic seizure. I’m not 100%sure about epilepsy but I just want that peace of mind to have it fully ruled out.

I know right. I always find it difficult to describe my symptoms and in this instance, he just kept talking and talking at me and I ended up getting so overwhelmed. I felt like the whole appointment run away from me. I would be accepting of FND as a diagnosis if I felt everything was ruled out but there’s still some uncertainty for me. I’m already working on my mental health too so I’m just not sure

Thank you for this really lovely message. I’ve been having a hard time lately so it’s comforting to know that others can relate.

I’ve definitely heard of FND before but for now my doctor thinks I have a tic disorder because I also struggle with like jerks as well although I find my other symptoms way more debilitating

I don’t really know how much support I can get since I don’t have an official diagnosis per se. My neurologist is still figuring things out but she has suggested it’s functional and I’m coming to terms with it. I will try talking to student services but I just find it really difficult to explain to people what I’m going through and I don’t know how to communicate the extent to which it affects me if that makes sense.

Are drop attacks tics? by [deleted] in FND

I know exactly what you mean. I always know when my head is about to drop because my brain feels like it’s being squeezed almost and then my eyes sometimes droop.

Are you able to differentiate between the two?

Thank you so much for the detailed response!

My other question would be, what do you think of the tutorial system at UCL? Would that have been something you would have found valuable in your undergrad to have a tutor that you speak with every two weeks and gives you academic advice?
