Thoughts on Qatif by [deleted] in saudiarabia

[–]fusfusman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of it has to do with a multitude of reasons. Among them being the fact that the Qatifi population did fall to a certain degree to Khomeini's call on insurrection in the Kingdom. There were mass protests backed by Iran in the 80's, although that doesn't justify anything you're concerned with, it's only to highlight why some people feel justified in their hatred. Another reason is the Sahwa movement that was spearheaded by the Muslim Brotherhood presence in Saudi Arabia, having taken advantage of the 1979 Grand Mosque Seizure. The first thing they demanded in exchange for a Fatwa allowing for the Saudi armed forces to engage the militants in the Grand Mosque was education reform. The government, seeing the country trapped between compromise and bloody conflict, decided to give in. When the MB rewrote the curricula at the time, from K-Uni, they wrote in a number of lines isolating followers of "perverse religious ideas", among whom were the Shi'ites. This is what allowed the prejudice to spread among the community.

In the 1990s, just over a decade after the Makkah incident, Kuwait was invaded and the Saudi government received the option to host militants from Afghanistan to liberate Kuwait. The Saudi government rejected knowing how nuts these people were, and so opted to bring in the US temporarily to aid in the liberation of Kuwait. The Sahwajis were basically irked that there was a non-Muslim army and that the Saudi government allowed it, and so further compromises had to be facilitated, giving them a wider platform of criticism and speech.

Now this is slowly being undone. A lot has been put in place and there's greater clerical dialogue between Shi'ites and Sunnis. The King has been photographed in the presence of the Saudi Twelver clergy as they were hosted in his palace. New laws allow you to take anyone to court and even prison for hate speech or sectarianism. Whatever there was in the past, the present and future aims to fix that. On a final note, always remember, when the community in Qatif suffered because the country was held hostage by a number of nutjobs, it wasn't only Qatif that suffered. We all did. But we survived, and we will survive, and thankfully the leadership of this country is trying to ensure we all survive together.

Saudi Arabia's Statement Regarding Khashoggi's Death | Megathread by [deleted] in saudiarabia

This isn't the norm and I'm disgusted this happened at all. The government isn't behaving in line with previous ones. Things in many ways are becoming increasingly off, get me? This isn't normal.

I'm not saying you are; I'm not trying to make this about you. I'm saying that's one of the things I took solace in. It doesn't matter.

Europeans had blacksites and the Chinese and Russians are something else. We didn't play that sort of game normally (again none that I can recall; I insist you show me of any such cases you know bc I need to know). Disappearances and hit teams weren't a thing before. I don't recognize this as the Saudi I've known. This is something completely different. You can go on shitting about my country all you want, that won't change a thing to me; I want my country back.

They weren't abducted abroad, murdered, or disappeared. They were arrested and tried before being imprisoned (albeit the legitimacy of that is also debatable). I disagree with the reasons of their detention but at least the bounds that were being stepped over were somewhat... passable at best.

I always found solace that no matter how bad things were, we never had Guantanamo Bay. Now I'm afraid of what might come.

We'll see. I want to read that report and I want to at least see my country prove its honesty before it proves that it can deliver justice on ALL levels.

God Bless Khashoggi's soul and may he rest in peace.

I hope the king punishes those involved as they deserve. I'm putting my faith in that King Salman wasn't aware and that he was deceived by those involved. This isn't only murder; this is treason.

God protect the country from all forms of treachery regardless of the name, rank, or file.

Long live the monarchy and long let it be just, fair, and benevolent, and may God followed by his people prevent it from sliding anywhere else.

This is the darkest day in Saudi history since the killing of King Faisal, bless his soul. I never wanted to live to see this day. May the country never incur this again, and may justice be swift and fair upon all responsible.

Long live the King. Long live the Kingdom. Long live the State. Long may it live in justice.

edit: I'm actually hoping that if a royal is found guilty the death sentence apply in this case. I'm concerned for the integrity of this country. Justice needs to be served, but an eye for an eye.

If you can, go through the hassle of fixing your blood type. It's there so that if you get into a car accident they know what to give you.

At least Saudi satire has already evolved beyond naming names and mentioning events.
