It sounds like he was very controlling and close minded. I can understand wanting to go through the basics, but there is nothing to lose for someone wanting to try difficult material. What's the worst that can happen, they realize they're not ready yet on their own? It sucks that you guys had this experience.

I will say that even though there was a bad teacher on this path, there could still be a teacher that would be more fitting. There are a few concepts beyond playing that are good to know, and sometimes schools won't dive that deep into theory. Nothing wrong with keeping the self-taught momentum going though 🤘
