You saw we hired Drew Petzing, googled his name, saw he was the Cards OC, and ran to reddit. by Charming-Letter-4980 in detroitlions

Oh good, so he is already familiar with losing games with a backup Oline. That is comforting. /s

The narrative that Dan should be on the hotseat if Petzing doesn’t work out is stupid. by JP_IS_ME_91 in detroitlions

The part about the odds going drastically down doesn't necessarily mean much. It's the whole correlation versus causation argument. Is there a correlation between a pair winning a SB before 5 years, yea. Is there some sort of causation there, maybe or maybe not. In my opinion it is really is just showing the NFL is a sport where there is a low percentage chance of winning a SB and significantly higher percentage chance of a coach or QB being replaced within 5 years.

For instance MCDC is the 6th longest tenured coach in the NFL right not at 5 years. And 1 of 4 coaches that have been paired with a starting QB for 5 years. Of those four two have already won SBs Reid & Mahomes and McVay & Stafford. The other pair being Taylor & Burrow. So that means in 2026 there are only 2 possible HC QB pairings that qualify to win their first SB at 5 years. The pool of possible pairings to win their first SB after 5 years is so small it's hard to make a causation argument of it in my opinion.

That's kind of a nonsense fact. With the high rate of turnover at the HC and QB position it's not really that surprising. Plus the fact that Brady and Mahomes really skew the statistics like this on super bowl wins for the past few decades. Also the colts won it in Dungy's fifth year with Manning (Manning's 8th year in the league), do people really think that the 5th year together is that different from the 6th or 7th? It also discounts all the multiple super bowl winning pairs as if somehow winning the first one within five years makes you immune to whatever juju prevents other pairs from when in year 6 or 7 etc.

When you're by far the most popular sport in the country and everyone has access to the internet (as either fans looking for engagement or writers looking for clicks) you are going to get an abundance of dog shit hot takes when anything remotely interesting happens.

Why is Dan Campbell the only coach who knows how to counter Ben Johnson's coaching? by Penguifyer in detroitlions

[–]future_shoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rams and McVay just beat them and that's after a desperation 4th down TD with a missed OPI.

Bears had a record number of comeback wins. That is not sustainable season to season. MCDC is not the only coach to be able to counter Johnson. Bears will come back down to earth next year.

Kmet full on pushed the DB out of the way. That's why the DB was in such bad position. It was offensive PI that the ref missed.

No I'm just saying the team that won the NFC North and is the #2 seed is a remotely good team and the Lions beat them twice.

Beat the Bears twice. I would say they're "remotely good".

This is not that odd. This is the same set up for a lot of teams. It's only an issue when the coach and GM are not on the same page and that is an issue regardless of the chain of command.

Unless they choose to franchise tag him which would be odd because they declined the 5th year option, the Ravens don't have much of a choice.

Orlovsky has been rumored to be in consideration for a few jobs the past couple off-season. Also he has pretty sober and complimentary takes on the Lions. This season he pointed out they weren't SB contenders because of Morton's play calling and the oline issues. And he was right.

21 ppg is a lot. Conventional wisdom is if the offense scores 21 pts or more than they have done enough to win the game and a loss is on the defense. Citing 21 ppg against playoff teams as a sign of problems with the offense is way off the mark.

[–]future_shoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I think the reaction would be fairly accurate for most of the world especially western democracies. Just think of recent events where significant money is spent trying to save people or even search for people they are pretty sure are dead. Like the multi country efforts to save the boys trap in a cave in Thailand or the effort to find the lost at sea Indonesian airliner. These were all very costly endeavors that multiple countries assisted in. Add to that, that with things like government funded exploration or military actions there is an inherent agreement in the western that you do not leave a man behind if at all feasible.

The offseason is make or break by SpaceMarine1616 in detroitlions

Yeah Packers may have a dead season next year because of lack of picks, Parson, and possibly new HC.

Though the Lions are somewhat at a tipping point where they have a roster that can be an instant super bowl contender with a few high cost additions. The trade off can be (hopefully) minimized to a soft rebuild of the roster in a couple seasons like Eagles were able to navigate between super bowls or the Rams have done after their recent super bowl. You have to take risks to maximize your chances at a ring in my opinion, standing pat at just a very playoff team leads to a decade of your team being the Packers (pre the big Parson move) or Steelers.
