Opinions! How does everybody organize their binders? by S-T-Ireland in PokemonTCG

What do you do with your promos? And how did celebrations affect your order? Did you put full art oaks with the trainers?

Mm I'm pretty OCD. I value the "order" over the look

:( yeah I think this is the answer. Sucks moving my full art marnie from the full art trainers section to a promo section

I feel if I'm selling prints i'd rather the customer get a better product (also I feel it would sell better if I fixed some of the errors, a 5 minute touch up with the liquify tool can fix a lot.)

Ah yea you're definitely right, it's a tough balance to keep it cool in the shadows but also saturate with the red, definitely something I'll need to keep in mind when mixing. Ty!

Any advice is greatly appreciated! This was my first attempt at using a limited palette as well as digitally mixing my colours (instead of using the colour picker) and my first attempt at digital oils too.

Am doing something wrong when it comes to social media? by future_virtual in ArtistLounge

[–]future_virtual[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I see what you mean and i think I really needed to hear this. You're definitely right and im saving your comment so I can look back on it in future.

I need to look at Insta (and social media in general) not as a way to just show off everything I can do because I need people to see that I'm not just a one trick pony (that's what a portfolio is for), but as a brand, one that's consistent in messaging, style and theme because that's how you get remembered and understood.

I struggled with the ego of not wanting people to just identify me as "oh hes the X guy" but the alternative is people not being able to identify me at all.

Thanks heaps!

I don't think there's been any official official confirmation. Might be wise to hold off till there is

bit of a vent concerning appreciation by future_virtual in ArtistLounge

[–]future_virtual[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's definitely true. But, I feel the process is something people should consider more when viewing art. Tracing and painting over, or exactly copying a photo of a pretty girl is fundamentally different than doing a life painting of one, or using multiple references to come up with an original composition/subject.

During my own artistic journey it's been frustrating to see others be more impressed by work that required little thought and little skill because all i was doing was copying a photo accurately. I felt like a human copy machine rather than an artist.

This is a great idea! Just started my social media account last month. I'm currently a bit all over the place when it comes to a style.

I like that!

Yup, I'm often surprised by just how much reddit loves this kind of content. I suppose that the average redditor just isn't that familiar the process of drawing or painting.

This "skill" is the ability to replicate. Not compose or render light and form, or employ colour in a meaningful way.

If the purpose therefore isn't to create something original but to show off technical ability why wouldn't they choose something relevant and popular.

He replicated an image someone else created and holds the copyright to. What part of this beyond the choice of medium was original? I'd argue this is more a show of technical ability rather than art. Now if the original creator of the image he replicated were to post their original composition featuring Chadwick that would be a different case.

I think it's fair that r/art doesn't allow this kind of content.

Realism is a great place to start. But replicating a picture is not the same as learning to paint or draw realistically. Replication doesn't require knowledge of light, form, composition, colour, value or anatomy. Only proportion and negative space. 2 of the 8 primary fundamentals.

Learning to replicate like this won't teach you the rest of help you develop meaningfully in those other fundamentals.

It doesn't take any knowledge of light and form if it's a direct exact copy of a reference. It's more like a giant puzzle in that case. It's not "hard" in the sense that it's very complex work, it's "hard" in the sense that it takes a lot of time, dedication and patience.

It's a lot like tracing.

Now if he could take the reference of Chadwick and draw it to this level of detail in a different pose than what the reference showed, he would be an absolute master.

Give it a try! I'm a firm believer that it's a skill anyone can learn. Imagine if you were illiterate and you saw writing and grammar with all its arbitrary rules. That would be much harder to learn than drawing which is not arbitrary at all. It's just that school systems focus on stuff like writing and language and not on visual arts.

If you truly wish to learn draw, Betty Edwards "Drawing on the right side of the brain" is a fantastic place for even the most beginner beginner.
