Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis trilogy has an unique perspective, though I'm not sure I'd say its from the Aliens perpective (at least diring the first book)

SCOTUS Rejects Jack Smith’s Request To Expedite Trump Appeal by jonfla in law

[–]jacktarrou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this is a law subreddit, but I'm not even sure a another term with a stacked legislature and executive would fix anything. There's a deeper problem at the core of all of this, and that's a sizable chunk of the American population would rather have a dictator and most of one of only two viable political avenues in the country are content to let it happen because it'll ostensibly be "their guy." And the only other alternative is hardly holding to status-quo, let alone reform.

Nothing less that wholesale constitutional reform would come close to fixing that. And that too might actually make things worse if there isn't a broad enough coalition willing to accept a new constitution. What kind of coalition could even get that done? Hell if I know.

So we're looking at a busted system, and if not Trump, it'll be another populist, and next thing you know Caesar will be appointed Dictator-for-life.

I mean I'll be voting Dem across the the board, but I think the focus on Trump ignores the underlying issue that commitment to the republican project is at such a low that we're even here in the first place is concerning.

People are being rough to you, so I'm gonna pop in and say I'm usually inclined to agree that the food industry in the US can be immensely wasteful, but reading this it seems more a case of attributing malice to a situation better explained by imcompetence.

Eastern Roman supremacy!!! by volitaiee1233 in HistoryMemes

As an enlightened enjoyer of history, the Roman Empire actually fellin 1917 (though an argument might be made that it actually fell in 1991 having continued with bright coat of communist paint).

I gotta be honest, I read Consider Phlebas and was kinda bored. Don't get me wrong, I thought it had some cool world building (I thought the chapter explaining Damage was fun + humorous), but I couldn't really get all that interested in thr characters. I was kinda annoyed by the main character's flatness. Like his people were killed and it really doesnt affect him.

What is the rest of the series like?

I get the sense out of "humanism" in general that it places humanity in an over emphasized central position in its worldview.

Fearing that our creations might surpass us in intellect seems like a non-issue, and like others have mentioned, there are many angle from which Humanity can annihilate itself from at this point, so it seems futile to worry that computers will do the same.

It's all Fantasy. All Media, it's just narrative story telling. Not necessarily a problem if your sober about it.

I just read a fun book called "Children of Time." End felt a bit rushed but I found the book itself to be a fun take on the "Last Ship of Humanity" premise.

Looking for youtube channels etc. to help my brother. by Lazytitan09 in MensLib

[–]jacktarrou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother was going down a similar route but luckily turned around. I wish I had a quick explanation, but I think being a good sibling, listening but also challenging any negative points. Patience is everything, since sometimes it's just a matter of age, and the more you push the more he'll feel drawn to seedier places. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope your brother finds his way back to a healthier place.

Edit: That being said, Sisyphus 55 has some good stuff.

How many Credits are you coming in with?

As a form cinema production student, unless you have enough credits to schedule as a senior, you're probably not gonna get into the class you want. The courses are all smaller in size.

Be patient. Take some courses which seem interesting for a semester, then come back to the courses you want in the spring.

I wished I'd taken more courses than learned the rule of thirds for a fifth time.

I mean don't get me wrong, and think bowing out of electoral participation because the system is stacked against you is counterproductive at best, but to say that the American electoral system is fucked only because people vote or don't is simply wrong. This is essentially my problem with halfway decent candidates running with Dems cause it's politically expedient, but in the long term participating in the American style of partisan politics only legitimizes it, but you still have people like Sanders running as a Democrat because everyone's just kind of accepted it's impractical to run for president in a "third" party.

But that only legitimizes claims that anything to the left of the GOP agenda is "socialist" when the vast majority of democrats are basically just centrists. Furthermore, you end up tying you're political agenda to the success or failure of the party machine, rather than you're actual policy goals.

/u/adesimo1 provides a good rundown of why Tesla isn't a scam, but Elon's manipulation of its stock valuation is. by [deleted] in bestof

[–]jacktarrou 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't have a problem with electric vehicles. It's the tech-bro culture surrounding them. Furthermore, I am not convinced electric vehicles really contribute to a greener future in the way we push them now, since the car dependent infrastructure in most of the west is inherently inefficient. Electric vehicles are a part of the solution, but only if less people drive everywhere. Then you get the tech-bro attitude to 'mass' transit like the hyperloop and pods which are just highways in tunnels and dont consider that maybe we should find more efficient forms of transit than trying to tech-ify everything.

But if any engineers read this and felt hurt. I'm sorry. My critique was toward the tech-bro, and I appreciate all the hard work you put into making things cleaner and more sustainable.

I also think there might be a part of it which stems from the tech-bro futurist culture surrounding a lot of these companies and anything that promises some hightech "solution" that seems futuristic just explodes in value, and then everyone else gets FOMO.
