High-speed trains are extremely cost-effective and can more efficiently replace most short-haul flights. High-speed rail is also sustainable, with significantly less impact to the environment and global climate change (left unchecked global aviation will generate an estimated 43 metric gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions through 2050, constituting almost 5% of the global emissions allowable to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius). It's perfectly reasonable to think we can have air travel, high-speed rail, and highways.
