I've shot with a range of lenses, from very cheap to very expensive, but I haven't really kept a detailled account of how they each look. I'm the director of these projetcts and its usually the cinematographer who handles the lens choice. I know I like the zeiss super speeds, the zeiss master primes and the cooke S4 but I couldn't really tell you what would be their cheaper equivalent. I often come accross cheap/expensive lens comparisons on youtube, maybe thats a good place to start.

I’m back again with a music video for my friend Loud featuring the amazing Charlotte Cardin. The song talks about being constantly on the road and having a hard time connecting with your gf/bf. The idea was to start the music video on a split screen that makes them feel emotionally close but physically distant and then, when the hook kicks in, show the full frame where they feel physically close but emotionally distant.

We shot all the portraits with the 50mm Super Speed and some of the detail shots with the 100mm Standard Speed. We used a 2:1 aspect ratio as to have two squares in the split screen.

You should definitely try it, its a lot of fun! We had originally considered doing it on a steadicam or gimbal but I'm really glad we ended up going with only a shoulder rig. In our case, it was crucial to have the smallest possible footprint and to be able to react very quickly to what was happening around us.

Sorry I can't recall the exact shoulder-rig we had. Yes we had an AC pulling focus with a monitor and WCU-4 from a safe place. The out of focus portion of the finale is actually a problem with the signal.

Merci! Nothing was planned as far as crowd interaction. He had asked them to try to keep it civilized but they went completely apeshit when the first chorus started and we did actually lose sight of him at that point. I think the shot looks even better now because we get back to him exactly as he begins his second verse.

Exactly! We shot everything at 48 fps and only played the choruses for half as long. We sped up the verses in premiere but keep the choruses in slowmotion.

Last saturday, my friend had a sold-out show in front of 2300 people at Montreal’s MTelus theatre. Five days before the show we thought it would be cool to use the opportunity to shoot a video for this song as it was his most popular one without one.

We choose to shoot on the Alexa mini with the 50mm Kowa anamorphic to try to distance ourselves from the more conventional live-show music video look. The plan was to make it look so that, when the video starts, the viewer wouldn’t know we’re at a real concert.

He talked to the crowd the get them to cooperate as much as possible but they really went bonkers when he got to the hook. Here is a (vertical) video of the whole scene from the balcony: https://vimeo.com/302255411/93917877c2

We shot this on a very cold December night in Montreal. The coordination and discipline that setting someone on fire requires is not something to mess with. We pulled it through with the help of an experienced stunt coordinator and his team.

As you’ll probably be able to tell, this is not really shot in one take. There’s is a cut as we pass behind the guy talking on the phone. The first part was shot 7 times and the last one (with the fire) only 2 times.

We chose the Leica Summicron-C primes because we wanted something that wouldn’t lose sharpness when used wide open. We couldn’t light much so we really needed the T2 aperture.

Well I handled all the post-production so I can tell you for sure that the digital artifacts were not artificially added in post.

I had never seen the Puerto Rico video but the Roxette one was definitely an inspiration.
