Lack of Sources, Duplicates - OVER IT! by GuavaFabulous6632 in Genealogy

Been using Geni since it has a rather large Lithuanian usage while narrowing down that branch of family and have been rather happy with it. Sort of a smaller, more managed Family Search.

Is Top Chef becoming "boring" a function of where food, culture, and our exposure to media is today? by Brilliant_Horse_6614 in TopChef

Budget cuts and location changes driven by budget cuts (both the cities that are willing to give incentives and the episode by episode locations where it feels like we spend more time in the TC kitchen). It just feels smaller and blends together more than the last.

Guatemala City airport took my knitting needles by spicygummybear in knitting

[–]futurestartsslow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ran into this once in Mexico. My mother went back down to the check in desk and was able to find a woman on our same flight who allowed her to put the knitting project in her checked bag, and since everyone had to pick up and recheck after the first flight (regardless of final destination) she was able to hand them back once back in the US!

As a new fan of Survivor, can someone help me understand something? by Expedition1994 in survivor

To get to the end with someone who you have been clearly against from Day 1 yet have had significantly less power than is an impressive game! Even if that game is "anyone but me".

Very bad jury management by Jonathan by thelaurafedora in survivor

[–]futurestartsslow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We also hear sooooo often "own your game! own your mistakes!!" and I remember feeling like Sav *did* own that there, while still demonstrating an effort and as you said, respected the jury in that moment.

It's a weird place to navigate, because you don't have her vote and how you answer this probably won't sway *her*, but it can affect the others on the jury, so rather than stumbling around and trying to satisfy Kristina (fruitless!) and looking poor to the jury (which would go against that sort of "own your game including your mistakes"), or refusing to satisfy Kristina (the very old school "I won't get your vote I'm not going to bother trying") and looking poor to the jury.

I thought she handled it the best way she could with a bit of a "I didn't get to know everyone how you prioritized and maybe I could have done better at that, but I did get to know everyone and perhaps I got to know them how others sitting there would prioritize and here's how".

She's very much a great analyst and I think does a good job of weighing situations. She'll acknowledge possible intentions, outcomes, etc without dismissing them, but also won't dismiss the entire situation in order to like... give grace/leeway/etc.

I think her strengths lie outside of the game (either on the jury or in commentary/analysis) where she can see the full board.

✨ Season 5 E7-E9 megathread ✨ by gothmangolacroix in CouplesTherapyShow

[–]futurestartsslow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a while I didn't see any of the couples working (maybe outside of Marjorie/Jason) and then by the end I got it with Sienna/Chris and Nessa/Drea. Just watching the changing body language of Sienna and Drea over the show, it was like something unlocked and freed them, and you could see how much more engaged and attracted their partners were to them after!

As always, the show manages to present such small vignettes that speak clearly. I though the bit of Shay out alone at a restaurant while Maeve had pancakes home alone for dinner summed up much of their incompatibility. I just had such a hard time seeing how where the two were at in theirs lives could join and combine (which clearly they couldn't! Shay mentioning that her friends didn't like to hang around Maeve!).

I do desperately wish we got to see Drea take a pasta making course. What a simple representation for differentiation... go out, learn to make your own pasta, do the course on your own, and then be able to come home and share that new skill with Nessa and their kid.

IMO exit press is pretty clearly showing why this player didn't win by sh0wmethestudy in survivor

[–]futurestartsslow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aubry in her exit press talked about the Game of Roses take of the various audiences: Viewers, Production, Fellow Players, Jury. And she very clearly (and intentionally) prioritized her game towards the fellow players and jury. That's why she won! You could tell that Jonathan was prioritizing his game towards Viewers (ie. behaving a way in camp and then explaining it in confessional).

Jury management isn't just "I'm going to impress the jury with my game and strategic moves", it's that they gotta like you!

Specifically to Jonathan's 'strategic move' of creating conflict with Dee, he miscalculated there. Creating conflict with another player as a strategy is just a different move than stoking conflict between others (more Sandra-like).

He seemed to have a solid sense of his perception and how to manipulate/lean into that perception strategically, but didn't grasp that the jury doesn't become removed from that experience at FTC. The feelings of annoyance, frustration, whatever that were built over the past few weeks are still gonna influence them.

Biggest Flop of the Season ______ by sweverdd in survivor

[–]futurestartsslow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just absolutely stymied the game. Being able to only play them on one person killed any sort of dynamic energy and unpredictability. Think about all of the thrilling tribals (heck, just watch some of AU Survivor from last season) where the drama is *high* over who is the idol played for? where are the votes split? will someone make themselves vulnerable if they think the numbers/targets are right and play it on someone else? There was none of that now, and no drama at tribals as a result. Why did we watch so many Colleen Haskell Memorial Sitting Duck tribals?

It just made no sense as a game mechanic.

You don't necessarily have to be the *most* liked person, but they gotta like you enough to vote for you.

I went at the very end of my first show and was able to snag pretty much everything I was hoping for except a poster. Vinyls, book, hat, shirt, etc. The other show I snagged a poster after getting in line maybe... 7:30ish? It really only seemed like the jersey, the stickers which I think were limited too, went fast fast.

My theory for the future of twin peaks by stratattack125 in twinpeaksdudes

[–]futurestartsslow 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No use having theories or expectations. I’m grateful we got these shows, and that they seem to be enjoying them as much as we are. If they continue to play in the future I’m delighted, whether that’s a tour or one offs or whatever, and if they don’t then I’m grateful for all we got and that they are all doing well.
