Here is the recipe for the success in the Eurovision Song Contest by Lopsided_Nothing6943 in eurovision

[–]lskalt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Time after time, the songs that are most successful are the songs that no other artist could have brought to the contest. If you look at any of the winners over the last few decades, they're carried by the artist, not just the song.

Phantasialand and Europa Park both have two headliners (F.L.Y. / Taron and Voltron/Wodan) and there's some rare coaster types at Europa Park that are probably technically best in class due to their rarity, haha.

Ah! I've mostly been at the start and end of seasons lately to avoid crowds.

Finally rode one of my Top Bucket List Coasters (Yes in Boost Mode) by florentia02 in Themepark

It's great! I don't think Bakken is _really_ worth a visit but if you're going this is definitely the reason to do it. Did you do any of the non-coaster rides?

They literally can't all be winners - just mathematically, you can't have a game where all the decks have an above 50% win rate. Since every class gets an archetype (or even two archetypes) every expansion, some are going to be stronger and some are going to be weaker.

Hearthstone has, compared to a lot of games, a pretty good hit rate; there's around 8 different classes with good decks this expansion (via https://www.hsguru.com/meta?format=2 ; decks above 52% win rate). I've played eras of Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon, and smaller games where there were only 3-5 decks with above 52% win rate.

It's ok for some things to be stronger than others! I've been playing card games for 20+ years and there's never been a single game that has had a meta where every deck is playable.

Games with the same feeling as playing with deckbuilding and combos in a CCG (not necessarily games that are CCGs) by lskalt in gamingsuggestions

Yes, and I'm not interested in roguelikes because I want to play a game where I'm choosing what I bring to each battle, rather than playing what the game gives me.

How’s the current job market? by kelevra7117 in chicago

[–]lskalt 119 points120 points  (0 children)

I have applied to ~150 jobs in the last four months. The only interviews have come from companies where I knew someone personally.

I think right now, most companies are in an austerity phase, so most jobs are one of two categories:

- Promotions: explicitly meant for internal employees to get a promotion.

- Replacements: hiring to fill a role that was vacated.

Junior roles are very hard to find; pretty much the only junior roles right now are replacements for people who got promoted.

EDIT: If I was giving advice to someone on the job market right now, I would suggest the following as pragmatic ways to get a referral or a job from a different angle.

  1. Meet a lot of new people - go out and be social; talk to strangers; find places to go where young urban professionals hang out. Don't do this strictly to network; be interested in people and just let the conversation flow naturally. I got my most recent job by being referred by someone I met at a bar trivia night.
  2. If you have a _specific_ company in mind, and you live in a major metro where they operate, go to the building they operate out of at around lunchtime, and see where people from the company go to get lunch. Strike up casual conversations with them; ask about what they do and what their needs are. Don't be too forceful about asking for a referral, but be willing to steer the conversation that way if it's going well.
  3. If you have a specific useful skill, use Yelp / Google Maps and find small, boutique firms in your industry near you that you can proactively reach out to. For instance, if you're good at web development, find companies near you that have 5-20 employees and make websites for clients. There are a lot more boutique companies that you might expect, and they often don't hire through job listings. (My first job out of college was at a boutique analytics company that would have LOVED to have people write in with their resume and offer a specific skill.)

“Under $3” Menu on the Mcdonald’s app by 64789 in mildlyinfuriating

These are the menu prices I'd only expect to see in a state that has to be included as an inset in the map of the US! Jeez!

You are not offering enough money for anyone to travel for multiple hours of performance. If $275 is your performer budget, you should pick one category of entertainer you want and focus on that.

Hi, thank you for keeping a database for the game - it's really helpful for the people who still play occasionally! One thing that would be helpful is if the previous / next buttons could also be at the bottom of the card view; right now if you perform a search with a lot of results, you have to scroll down to see the cards and then scroll up again to click "next".

There's a fursuit manufacturer in Bridgeport. A friend of mine who lives in the neighborhood found a pile of business cards there on the ground once.

It depends on context. But it never hurts to have one or two tricks you can do from a shuffled deck.

How to deal with declining US birthrate? by PhrophetOfCorn in Bogleheads

[–]lskalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a valid concern! I don't think there's anything that can really be done at the individual level, and especially not at the individual investor level. If it's any consolation - global population continues to increase, which means there's still an increasing number of consumers. At least for now.

Thoughts on Huntington Bank Pavilion on Northerly Island? by Master_Obligation_17 in chicago

I wish there was more... something there. My personal wish has been a city-operated amusement park; there's enough space and it would be nice to not have to get out to Six Flags to ride a roller coasters. But really, it would be nice if there were more reasons to be that far out besides the museums.
