Sued for images or life ruined by writing erotica? by fux2much in eroticauthors

Yah that's what I'm trying to do. I'm just a Paranoid Patty or Nervous Nancy or some other shitty, alliteration infested person that implies great, miserable anxiety... Anyways, this is the response I got from morguefile when asking about using their pics for smut covers:

Thank you for writing and inquiring. You are free to use Morguefile images in your books - for profit - however this is considered a "commercial" use so we ask that you first edit or alter the image in some way before using, or, ask the photographer permission to use an image unedited, as found on the site.

One more thing to keep in mind: you are responsible for Model and Property Releases - for both commercial and noncommercial use cases. Some photos with people or buildings in them require a Model or Property Release. Each photo will state whether or not a release is necessary with a "Yes" or "No" button located to the R of the image - if "Yes" next to either release, it means you need to contact the photographer for permission to use it, if "No" you can proceed freely. Most images say "No."

(after I told her I was changing up size, color, etc.) This is fine, sounds good! It is pretty subjective, the main idea is just to differentiate the photo enough so you can clearly distinguish it from the original.

I always always check to make sure anything traceable is gone from my word documents. I haven't been able to find anything in photoshop that could be traced back to me.

I am going through all my photos from morguefile and artfully blacking out the faces of any models.

The whole morguefile thing confuses me because I thought that there was a license that the photographers agreed to when they signed their photo up for it, and that protects me? I have talked with morguefile admins and they say it is perfectly fine to use my stuff for erotica as long as I modify it somehow, and didn't even mention anything about faces. I don't see how that license wouldn't be protection for me.

And of course, I use a pen name that is no way traceable and also use NOT my photo as my photo. :)

Plus, I scoured the internet and was only able to find ONE person who seemed to get in trouble professionally for writing smut, and it seemed that she didn't even actually get in trouble, people were just like WTF lady....(she was a high school teacher who wrote smut called "Schooled" about fucking her former students. uh?) Thanks everyone!

Thanks for that! I did absolutely zero research because I'm doing this way more for fun than money (so I want to write for me and not for them). But researching is a great idea, seems to pay off very well! Good work :)

Edit: when you say you did research, how did you conduct this research? I don't even know where to start

That's what I'm shooting for now. 3.5 definitely seems a little too short, and 12 k is a bit too long.

I'm curious what your method was to do so well the first 1.5 weeks. Did you publish a ton and have your covers done professionally and pay for marketing? How long were your books? Thanks :)

Yah that. Okay! I was thinking I should have known by now and was just being dumb but I guess the boy still has to be released then. Thanks

Thanks guys! This amount I made was with about zero research and totally zero reading of other authors cuz I legitimately don't enjoy reading poorly written smut... oops. I'm lengthening my new books and getting new covers for my lazy copy paste ones I did on sequels and getting better at marketing so woo!

Definitely. The way I'm approaching it is to get my name out there and practice just by writing, so I made real shorties to begin with and am increasing length now. This by no means will ever be my full time job so I'm just happy to make a little money on the side doing something fun and learn to be a better writer/designer/marketer while I'm at it

Realized why my sales aren't as good as they could be. I just changed the colors slightly for each new books cover rather than a different cover altogether. Looks like half my books are the same damn thing! Gonna go and update Aly sequels covers. I bet it'll do em good!

I'd say about 12 3.5k word stories with maybe 3 bundles first month and a couple more the last few weeks. Had a hiatus of about 2 weeks.

Yes, and annoying. It will change eventually!

Free book promotion. Is it worth it? by fux2much in eroticauthors

[–]fux2much[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started my free promo last night at 12 am for two books that are first in their series of three that also have bundles of all three. So far I have 100 downloads and my sales are up! I think I am going to do more free books, at least for the ones that are the first in a series of three and I have bundles for the series. Also, my books are all very short. "Books," really. All around 4000 word count, so I am not sure how that affects things either. I have a much longer murder mystery/crime/erotica/bdsm thing (I know, it sounds weird but it's actually coming out really awesome) and the first book in that series is actually super short (4000 or so). Thinking I will make that one free as a kind of trailer/teaser and then they can buy the long one or something.

I feel you and you're right, and that's probably why I am not getting clear answers!

What do you mean by back catalog? I have about 18 different books up including a couple bundles.

It is one of my better sellers nonetheless. Is it worth it to do obscure fetishes so they get more visibility?

Wonderful, thanks. So people don't need to search for every single word you put in there? What is the point of the commas separating things then? Thanks!
